I have a trap, but it's illegal in New Jersey to transport animals from one area to another, due to the chance of spreading diseases around. I think my neighbor, who owns a horse stable tried to shoot them a few days ago, but wasn't successful. I also bought a powder that's soaked in fox urine, which I'm supposed to sprinkle around the groundhog's den and in my garden, but I don't know if it will work yet. A friend said get a fifty gallon drum and fill it with water and pour it into the hole, making sure the escape route is blocked, and drown the sucker. I don't have access to a fifty gallon drum. Are there any sure-fire products on the market for getting rid of them, or do any of you have any methods that have worked in the past? I want to have a vegetable garden this year, something more than just tomatoes, which seems to be the one thing that groundhogs won't eat. Thanks, Steve.

Whistle pigs, as they are known as in some circles, are rather timid critters. They don't like open ground much at all for fear of being nabbed by a predator. If there is any high grass or other cover near the hole you found, cut it down, if at all possible. You can use their fear of predation by installing things in the area that move - especially some that move eccentrically with just the slightest breeze. The cheap, aluminum pie pans can be of some use - especially if they are cut into smaller wedges. Don't bunch them together, though. Spread them randomly throughout the area. Groundhogs are very afraid of hawks. If you can, paint one or two halves of the pie pans a dark color and suspend them high overhead on string or fishing line.

Where I come from, whistle pigs are hoary marmots, a high mountain critter in the west. Marmot information (including woodchucks).

Our local organic gardening guy has said to put human hair down the hole. You can also use your own urine to mark the territory.

Block the exits and fill the holes with water. Forget the 55 gallon drum; use a hose if you can.

Woodchucks are decent eating, if you want to do that.

I can think of all sorts of traps, deadfalls, snares and suchlike that should work, but I'm not going to describe them here. Take a stroll down to the local public library and check out the books on wilderness survival techniques.

Might be easiest to pay an exterminator, though.

Thanks for all the tips. The human hair should be easy to get from my barber. The fox urine is for real. You can also buy it in its pure liquid form, the same goes for coyote and bobcat urine. Collecting it has to rank with collecting bull semen as the worst imaginable job around.

Why do you want to kill the groundhog anyway? Groundhogs are fun to watch, cute, and they add class to a neighborhood. They can also help predict changes in the weather. If you take the time to get to know a groundhog it can lead to all kinds of enjoyable things.

If you can plug all the entrances, you can gas them to death. There are poison smoke bombs for the purpose or you could dump some potassium cyanide down the hole, add some water and plug the entrance.

I get these critters where the back yard falls away into a wooded ravine. They dig their tunnels right at the edge and if left to do their work, cause severe erosion of the area because of rain water washing through the tunnels. Shooting them isn't legal inside our city limits and they're so shy they run at the slightest sound so it's hard to draw a bead on one.

I'd estimate the weight of the groundhogs I get at 18 - 25 lbs. My neighbor traps them and releases them on the other side of the river. He uses a wire live-trap.

we have many woodchucks - most of the time the brazen critters ignore us -(a behavior we believe they learned from the rabbits ) though they HAVE learned what the shotgun looks like. The cats won't tangle with the 'chucks - though they HAVE taken care of the rabbits.

At least the chucks tend NOT to eat our garden plants - they prefer grazing the lawn - probably because they DEN in the gardens...

Okay. Fine. Let's get into the spirit of this. I suggest a ground level tactical nuclear strike. That should fry the groundhog right in his burrow. Very effective! Call up the Pentagon and see if you can convince them he's an Al Queda operative.

Another idea: Hire the Mafia to do the job. They don't charge all that much to hit a groundhog, because it involves little risk. None, in fact. It doesn't take much guts to shoot a groundhog.

Another idea: Pave over the entire area to a radius of 1/2 kilometre with sixteen inches of solid concrete. The groundhog will be trapped underground and die a slow and terrible death from starvation and thirst.

When the groundhog emerges to check his shadow on next Feb 2nd, he will sit in the comfy chair. Then you throw the switch and fry him with 80,000 volts! After all, the VITAL thing here is getting RID of the groundhog, right? Who can bear living in proximity to a filthy groundhog? Who, I ask you????

you should be nice to animals, and not kill them, [unless they taste good, or they dangerous like big lions etc, then obviosly you have to kill them, in case they eat you [or your family, [kids, wife etc].
that would be bad, if my wife and kids was eaten by a groundhog, i would be really fed up.

If you rent the very funny movie, "Groundhog Day", starring Bill Murray and Andi McDowell, you can get some close-up views of a groundhog. They're almost unbelievably cute, fat, and inoffensive creatures that dig a deep burrow and eat grass. They are diurnal, emerging at dawn to munch on fresh grass. They like sunny days. They are also called woodchucks. They look a little like an enormous hamster, but without the big ears sticking up. They have very small ears, hardly visible.

Country people used to eat them in the old days. They like grassy areas a lot, so they are attracted to built up areas by the lawns.

John, here is a marmot photo. Amos and Deckman, you two have overactive imaginations! I don't have woodchucks, so I haven't tested these remedies. I do have rabbits and snakes and tarantulas, but I'm not trying to get rid of them (at least, the rabbits are okay as long as I can keep them out of the garden).

On average, beaver are larger than groundhog. So are porcupine. They are all rodents, although the latter has a bit of an attitude problem as rodents go.

I just discovered a groundhog in my garden...actually my cats discovered her. She is nesting under my shed and hopefully has babies. In my last home, the groundhog befriended one of my cats and left her to babysit the little ones while she rummaged around for food. I have pictures of Aunt Lizzie minding the babies.

Why would anyone hurt a groundhog? I am planninf on planting a vegetable garden for mine. Any idea what she will like?

Ok everyone - how about getting rid of moles?

My boss has had them in his yard for over a year. They dig tunnels under the grass which makes it spongy and unattractive. He doesn't use all the chemicals and poisons in his yard that all the neighbors use so not only is his yard pretty poison free, but it is filled with tasty grubs and worms (which are good for the lawn and plants).

We've tried a professional setting traps but the traps almost never work, and it's costing a lot of money considering the effectiveness. I found that castor oil is use to spray on the lawn because universities have tested that moles don't like the flavor of it and if you soak the lawn with it, the worms get coated with the oil and the moles will supposedly move away to find better tasting worms. We've tried it over the past few months and it isn't working.

Any ideas? Personally I could care less because I'm pretty much anti-lawn, but he's my boss and it would be good to have an actual solution to this issue.

went to buy a bee-bee gun but i'd rather use the money for shoes - the gentleman at the gun counter told me to mix 1 cup of plaster of paris with 1 cup of sugar - notify the neighbors to keep their pets out of your yard (which they should be doing anyway) - - i haven't tried it yet tho i did buy the plaster of paris today.

You trap it and illegally relocate this big rat and guess what? Another will move right in. Ask me how I know...

I got moles and vols... If I could shoot 'um I would but they hide underground and eat the roots of my plants... I use mouse traps at their little rodent holes.... Up to well over 50 this year... I wish it were 1050... Sho nuff do...

I hate rat and rodents. They carry disease and kill yer plants...

TRIED TO TRAP A GROUND HOG, AND ENDED UP WITH A SKUNK. NOW WHAT? CALLED THE TRAPPER TO COME AND GET RID OF THE SKUNK. BEING A HOLIDAY HE DIDN'T WANT TO COME OUT. HE WOULD CHARGE $200. I met a Marmot once, high up in the mountains in Colorado. I'm very keen on them. Please save a few for me to see when we come back for a visit next year. Place "calcium carbide" deep in one #1hole.

Cover

Place a lit 15minute highway-safety-flare in the second connecting #2 hole.

Water - SOAK #1 hole thoroughly with hose or bucket.

Leave the immediate area (100 feet plus) - until the acetylene explosion - and permanent extermination of the critter.

That'll plow your fields, lawn, garden or whatever too, Garg. I kinda like it, but I suspect others won't.

Run a hose to the hole and flood 'em out, if you can.

Toss one of those sulfur-contained smoke bombs down the hole. This will also let you know where the other holes are -- be sure to put a sandbag or something on the first hole, though.

But I agree with Bobert. If you can, get someone who's a good shot to sit off about fifty years and shoot the little buggers.

You can eat groundhogs, if you care to.

Blood meal will keep dogs and cats off your property; might work for other critters as well.

Or keep, as Kendall suggested, a dog.

Anyone want some? We have a colony - burrows in most of our gardens - and they seem to be of several varieties - leastwise one is almost black, one a very golden blond (almost palamino colour) a grey one, a brown one.

they don't do as much damage as the deer though - as the cats and the groundhogs "respect" each other - and thus the groundhogs don't come near the house. Though they dig up the gardens they don't eat most of the plants - preferig to keep the cover around their burrows and grazing out on the lawn.

Though they *DO* love Gerbera daisies.

I wanted to shoot the stupid neighbor who was feeding the little buggers, but Tree wouldn't let me.

The dog or the cats didn't seem to bother them.

We just gave up on the garden.

I'm in favour of groundhogs. The more groundhogs the better. I'm in favour of rabbits too. Moles I can fairly much do without. If any groundhog wants to dig a hole on my property, he is welcome to. If a groundhog ran for President and I was an American citizen I would vote for him.

You find one in your toilet?
One pops up in the middle of a session -- sticking its head out of the hole it's eaten in your accordion?
One steals your bicycle?
One steals your car?
One steals your girl/boy friend?

No, I can't think of almost any situation that can't be improved by the absence of a groundhog.

Except, of course, for Groundhog Day. Hmmmmm-UM, but they're delicious.

Okay, guys, there are a few situations that cannot be improved by a groundhog. I admit that. Still, I think groundhogs are very loveable and add that special touch to any property containing an expanse of lawn. They also eat grass. This can be handy. If one could persuade large numbers of groundhogs to move in it would reduce the need for lawncutting.

I managed to get within 6 inches of a groundhog the other day and was he every surprised when he realized I was there. He was a lovely sight indeed, peering out of his hole in the ground.

Cute was not the word that immediately came to mind for the one that ate all the vegetables in my garden.

He was a fat furry dirty gray ball. I could see no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Bert - you wold probably have enjoyed seeing this as much as we did...

a couple weeks ago we were cleaning one of our goldfish ponds - this involves pumping it out after having stirred it up to distribute as much silt as possible into the water being pumped out. You actually pump a thickish slurry of mud.

There was a groundhog burrow in the side of the hill next to the pond - and to avoid the mess of pumping across the lawn, we decided to just send the slurry down the hole.

after about 2 hours of pumping we were extremely surprised to see a groundhog come barreling out of the burrow - coated in the mud - madder then a wet hen! It was perturbed - to say the least!

I'll bet it was perturbed! What a shocking and inexplicable experience for a poor groundhog to be subjected to.

Bert, I can understand your concerns about the vegetable garden. If I had a vegetable garden I would be much more worried about groundhogs. What you have here is a simple conflict of interest. I don't see any easy solution. :-) By the way, I suspect the groundhog was less than thrilled with your appearance as well.

An old friend has a cattle farm in the area. He just lets the three big dogs take care of the groundhogs. Talk about dogs with bad breath, man! 25 years of filing in the holes has been a real pain in the a$$.

Why would anyone fill in a groundhog hole? What's the problem with a groundhog hole? It's a less than 1 square foot natural looking feature in a piece of ground, for heaven's sake. People put up buildings that take up several thousand square feet and then they complain about a groundhog hole?

The groundhog has the decency to have a dwelling that is 99% underground and unseen, thus minimizing interference with others. Pity people couldn't be similarly inclined.

Indians never filled in ground hog holes, because to do so is a complete waste of time. (Of course, they did eat the groundhogs...)

Well, then, they should build a little cattle-proof iron fence around the groudhog hole, with a groundhog-sized entrance in it. This would solve the problem of injured cattle and look good too, if it was painted up in a nice color.

I am so disgusted to read messages of people about barbaric way of killing groundhogs.
I wonder if these uncivilized cold blooded people are killed same way they kill groundhogs how they 'enjoy' their horrible death!!!
It is so sad to know there are so many cold blooded uncivilized people in this world who have no feeling for sentient creatures who are only trying to survive.
I trap groundhogs with special trap in summer and release them in deep country near the lake in summer.
These groundhogs eat up my vegetables and I get upset but I wait until summer to trap them because they are nursing their babies in spring.
Just my thought about people and groundhogs.

No fire - no flares - no cigarettes in the vicinity.

It will kill all grass in the area - but use one liter of high octain (better fumes) gasoline poured down the main burrow.

Gasoline fumes are heavier than air - the critter - over 30 minutes will be afixiated. Lease the burrow open to allow ventilation through ALL chambers.

If you need to get rid of any coons, groundhogs and live in the michigan area get ahold of me. I have dogs that will successfully climb in a hog den keep them at bay while I dig to them. Capture the hog and dispatch or release it another loation upon the farmers request. Won't charge you a red cent!

Carbide. If you can't buy it pure, look for a weedkiller with a high percentage of carbide in it.
Put stuff into the hole.
Fill up with water.
Light the gas.
Your lawn, field or other kind of ground will change its overall appearance slightly, but you should get rid of the suckers.
