Just to let all you folk there who want to learn a Scots Gaelic song but not quite sure how to start? there is a new teaching resource available from Highland Council entitled "Seinn o ho ro Seinn" - it consists of a double CD set of 40 of the most popular Gaelic songs, sung clearly without accompaniment,by well known Highland singer Fiona Mackenzie then followed with the SPOKEN word by Arthur Cormack, of Cliar. It is accompanied by a book of lyrics and translations and has been much acclaimed across the world as an excellent way to learn songs with a good pronunciation guide- has been in the Scots bestsellers list since Novemebr. This arrived yesterday in the mail. Not bad for an international shipment. I've listened to one of the CDs and really like it. This is going to be a great learning tool. The CDs and book are packaged in a DVD box, so it's easy to keep them together and the CDs are well protected. All in all, I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in Scottish Gaelic song.

You may also be interested in "Karaoke Ceilidh", booklet and cassette still available from CLI

This is another recording in which you are given both songs and spoken lyrics, and on the reverse side are backing tracks. I haven't bought "Seinn o ho ro Seinn" yet; I expect I may prefer it to "Karaoke Ceilidh". But I daresay it's worth having both if you are learning Gaelic songs and need a bit of extra help with pronunciation.

Seinn o ho ro Seinn is going into its second pressing here so its greta to see the demand there is for a resource such as this! Living Tradtion magazine is doing a review of the album soon as is Rambles.
Its different from Karaoke Ceilidh in that we focus purely on the melody and the pronunciation without the background music to confuse things -   also there are many diffrent types of songs to choose from. KC is great fun though! I've been to a few pub sessions at the Mod where its done like a proper Karaoke session and its great fun! One other way to use Seinn o ho ro Seinn is to use the accompanying book as a ceilidh song book, kkep it in you pocket , handy or all occasions!

This is the thing that I've always wanted that I never knew I always wanted! Here's the question though, will an English speaker like me still sound stupid when singing these songs?
