Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: freda underhill Date: 27 Apr 04 - 11:32 AM here's some last words... Farewell Song To The Banks Of Ayr The gloomy night is gath'ring fast, Loud roars the wild, inconstant blast, Yon murky cloud is foul with rain, I see it driving o'er the plain; The hunter now has left the moor. The scatt'red coveys meet secure; While here I wander, prest with care, Along the lonely banks of Ayr. The Autumn mourns her rip'ning corn By early Winter's ravage torn; Across her placid, azure sky, She sees the scowling tempest fly: Chill runs my blood to hear it rave; I think upon the stormy wave, Where many a danger I must dare, Far from the bonie banks of Ayr. 'Tis not the surging billow's roar, 'Tis not that fatal, deadly shore; Tho' death in ev'ry shape appear, The wretched have no more to fear: But round my heart the ties are bound, That heart transpierc'd with many a wound; These bleed afresh, those ties I tear, To leave the bonie banks of Ayr. Farewell, old Coila's hills and dales, Her healthy moors and winding vales; The scenes where wretched Fancy roves, Pursuing past, unhappy loves! Farewell, my friends! farewell, my foes! My peace with these, my love with those: The bursting tears my heart declare- Farewell, the bonie banks of Ayr! ...................... "I composed this song as I conveyed my chest so far on my road to Greenock, where I was to embark in a few days for Jamaica. I meant it as my farewell dirge to my native land."-R. Burns, 1786 |

Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Blackcatter Date: 28 Apr 04 - 11:03 AM Actually feather we not used in the first golf balls: Between the 1400s and the 1960s there have been four distinct types of golf balls produced and used to play the game of golf: Wooden golf balls, Feather stuff leather cover (Featherie) golf balls, Gutta Percha balls and Rubber Core (modern golf) balls. Wooden golf balls may have been made of hardwoods, such as: beech and boxroot. Not much information has survived from the wooden ball period. They were probably made and used from the circa 1400s into the perhaps the 17th century. The leather cased and internally stuffed (feathery) golf ball period may have begun as early as the 1400s or as late as the 1600s and lasted into the early 1850s. The golf balls used during the pre-1700s period may have been wooden balls or leather cased balls that were stuffed with uncombed wool flock (the sajet ball?) or hair. The use of hair or flock as stuffing was most likely a short-lived process as the flock quickly lost its' resilience. Ultimately, early ball makers found using feathers produced a lively, longer lasting golf ball. |
