Through another thread I've been listening to Lucinda Williams' album "World Without Tears", and although she has quite a good voice, have found it quite a bland album.

But while listening to the very bluesy track "Atonement", I got to thinking about Joss Stone.

If you've never heard of her, go to WWW.jossstone.com (cant do blickeys) and have a listen.

This girl is 16 years old and can already count James Brown amongst her audience(and fans)...I find that staggering!

She don't live far up the road from me and I've been keeping an eye on her career since she went pro 3 years ago. I really think kids with her ability come along once in a blue moon, just listen to her version of "Fell In Love With A Boy"...good or what?

I'd like to get the MUDCAT opinion on Joss Stone.

In anticipation,

damon

She'll probably cut more ice when she stops doing covers and starts doing more original material. At the moment it's like superior karaoke.

Hey I really understand your interest in young performers like joss stone, she's great but don't kick Lucinda Williams in the process, she's even greater believe me... it comes from a much deeper place, is heartfelt, sexy, and simply older and wiser, you cant get away from that... not with a young performer who has more interest in pulling chewing gum from her hair than how she comes across to her audience...harsh I know but that is how she claims to be. (possibly a reaction to her mother)

Hi Matai,
I understand what you say about Lucinda Williams' music coming 'from a much deeper place'. That's almost inevitable I guess, given the age difference, but I wasn't really trying to compare her with Joss Stone. The track Atonement just reminded me of Joss Stone, is all.

I've had a second listen to some of LWs' tracks and would say I was being a bit tight by describing her voice as 'quite good'..it's very good, but the songs, musically, still dont do much for me. Just my humble opinion though!

As for JS pulling gum from her hair, well...she got alot of hair, and I think on stage she still feels very shy and awkward, and simply can't understand why people are raving about her. She says she just opens her mouth and that voice comes out, so give her 10 years and a few of lifes little knocks and I'm sure we'll be hearing real passion in there.

Thanks for doing the blickey thing open mike
