Subject: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: GUEST,Damon Date: 19 Mar 04 - 03:00 PM Sorry to take up more valuable threadspace again, but I have searched high and low for the lyrics (and tune) to the above song. I've only heard it twice over the years...it was sung by Brenda Wooton, and I think that's what it's called. The chorus starts with that line, that much I do know. It must be quite obscure, or something, but anyone know it? damon |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Hawker Date: 20 Mar 04 - 03:02 PM Hi Damon, I have a recording of this song, sung by Brenda somewhere, I have just had a look and I can't find it! I'll have a hunt for you. Brenda sings a lot of Richard Gendalls songs, it may be one of his. I'll get back later! Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: GUEST,harlowpoet Date: 20 Mar 04 - 03:05 PM I was in a pub at the Cornwall folk festival the other year, and it was sung, rather well by a couple of guys who I think sang with the Cape Cornwall singers who have it as part of their repetoire. I asked someone who wrote it, didn't get the name but I think it may have been one of their number. Not much help, but for me, it was a stand out song, which I hummed on the five hour train ride back to London. Simon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Damon Date: 21 Mar 04 - 08:58 PM Lucy, you're a star...and good luck on your hunt! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Damon Date: 22 Mar 04 - 11:05 AM Hi Breezy I tried Mike O'Connor as you suggested, after finding his email on a site somewhere. He was fairly well stumped but gave me the phone number of 'John the Fish', who I seem to remember was a Radio Cornwall presenter, but may be wrong. If this doesn't work, Roger Bryant will be next...thanks! damon |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Damon Date: 24 Mar 04 - 07:15 PM Well I'm getting closer, I think, but it's certainly elusive. Through Bodmin Folk Club I've been put in touch with Mo Keast, who knows of the song but doesn't know it. She's going through her Brenda Wooton/Richard Gendall collection to see if she has it, and I'll find out in the morning. If no good, I'll try Jim Bassett...thanks again Breezy! Or Kernow John, as Robyn has suggested, thanks for that one too. Next installment soon... damon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Jim Dixon Date: 25 Mar 04 - 10:58 PM Well, I've been searching the Internet, and all I know for sure is that the correct spelling is WOOTTON. She has made several albums, but the only one still in print is La Grande Cornouaillaise (The Voice Of Cornwall), and that one apparently doesn't contain the song you're looking for (unless they have it under a different title). I did find one source that mentions CORNWALL, THE LAND I LOVE (no "That") -- but I don't know how reliable that is. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Hawker Date: 26 Mar 04 - 09:15 AM Damon, Apologies for taking so long, but, at last, I have found the tape I was looking for, and an old record of Brenda's I am not sure if what I thought you wanted is, as the words, now I look, are different, I have 2 songs that might be it, the first is called Pasties and Cream by Herbert Thomas and starts..... I sing of a county of pasties and cream Of pilchard and herring that sparkle and gleam In the dear old County of Cornwall the land of pasties and cream The land of the miners and fishermen bold The land of the smugglers in stories of old Where men go a-courtind and maids are not bold In the dear old county of Cornwall Cornwall, Cornwall, The dear old County of Cornwall Pasties and cream, tin in the stream Pilchards and herrings that sparkle and gleam Though we may roam, Cornwall's out home The dear old county of Cornwall..... etc. and the other is called: The story of my country by Richard Gendall and it starts..... Come and I will tell you The story of my country That all the wide, wide world, All the world shall know of Cornwall, My own dear land my Kernow, My own dear country............. etc. Do either of these sound like what you are looking for? If so I shall transcribe the rest, or if you pm me your address I can send you a tape. Cheers, Lucy |

But I'd like to hear them anyway so I'll pm you as you suggested. I had no luck with Mo Keast either..her LP collection is in storage! Thanks for your suggestion Jim, I'll check that link and try another search. And I'm onto Mr.Penna, see what he has to say, so thank-you Breezy. damon |
Subject: Lyr Add: CORNWALL MY HOME (Harry Glasson) From: Hawker Date: 26 Mar 04 - 03:07 PM Damon, Have just been on the Cape Cornwall Singers website and found this, is this what you are seeking? CORNWALL MY HOME I've stood on Cape Cornwall in the sun's evening glow, On Chywoone Hill at Newlyn to watch the fishing fleets go, Watched the sheave wheels at Geevor as they spun around And heard the men singing as they go underground. Chorus And no one will ever move me from this land Until the Lord calls me to sit at his hand. For this is my Eden, and I'm not alone. For this is my Cornwall and this is my home. I've left childish footsteps in the soft Sennen sand, I've chased the maids there, all giggly and tanned. I've stood on the cliff top in a westerly blow And heard the wave thunder on the rocks far below. Chorus First thing in the morning, on Chapel Carn Brea And gaze at the Scillies in the blue far away. For this is my Cornwall, and I'll tell you why Because I was born here and here I shall die. Chorus (repeat last line of the chorus) Copyright Harry (Safari) Glasson. I hope it is! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: GUEST Date: 26 Mar 04 - 09:02 PM Hello Lucy........suspenseful pause........unfortunately that's not the one. It's a good find though, I wonder how the tune goes? I appreciate you looking, too. I'm finding it, like you Joy, quite exciting. Do we have dull lives!? I cant believe it's proving this difficult to get hold of. Feel free to ask whoever you like down that way, many hands and all that! I'm going to speak to a woman at Radio Cornwall on Monday, as that's where I heard it, which may well turn something up. There might even be a spare copy round the place. Thanks for all the help, can't tell what Breezy means though... damon |
Subject: Lyr Add: HOME OF MY HEART (Lucy Burrow) From: Hawker Date: 27 Mar 04 - 08:16 AM Bugger! I thought I had cracked it for a minute there! Never mind, I'll keep looking - and let us all have it when you find it if you get there first! If you want a song waxing lyrical about this beautiful county, here is one of mine! HOME OF MY HEART (By Lucy Burrow) Oh fair land of Arthur, of unsurpassed beauty Home of the famer and fisherman's art May ever I live twixt your shores and the Tamar In the home of my children, the home of my heart A constant of changing wave-lust ridden coastlines God-gifted to wreckers who reap where you've sown Warm-wrapped in a blanket of feather-soft sea mist Where surfers and mermaids played long in your foam Your rocks and high moorland of granite and couch grass Birds call as they fly o'er circles of stone Standing tall, telling tales of nine maidens and hurlers Now wind-rushed and blustered, together, alone. Fair land of the farmer and fisher and miner As industries new waste the net, plough and mine This place, once our Eden, has Eden provided Past, Present and Future, stands timeless in time Oh fair land of Arthur, of unsurpassed beauty Home of the famer and fisherman's art May ever I live twixt your shores and the Tamar In the home of my children, the home of my heart Oh and I think breezy may have been alluding to my surname? Onward with the search! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Damon Date: 27 Mar 04 - 10:39 AM Those are beautiful lyrics Lucy, when I read the third verse I was there! Very evocative! It's nice 'meeting' people who share a passion, but if I ever meet you for real then you're gonna have to sing it...if you want to, of course! Anyway, onward... damon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Hawker Date: 27 Mar 04 - 12:48 PM Will do! I live just between Launceston & Bude, are you the same Damon as in the help needed N Cornwall thread? If so, you are living in Bodmin? I dont tend to get to the Folk Club, as we have youngsters who limit activities, but I will be at Wadebridge Folk Club in August and the Padstow shoestring Festival in July. Breezy, we will not be at Padstow this Mayday (hang my head in shame) We are off to Upton Upon Severn - I think its going to be a very Crowded Padstow being a Saturday - but I have written a sort of May song to compensate for not being there!! Hope you are all well & your folk Club is going great guns, I see it got several nominations in the Alternative awards! Cheers Lucy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: breezy Date: 27 Mar 04 - 01:10 PM Padstow's loss, yes it will be jammed on Saturday wont it? Enjoy Upton. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Damon Date: 27 Mar 04 - 05:53 PM I say blow up the bridges, that'll keep it down to the real keen ones. Too radical? I do live in Bodmin Lucy, but I don't go the folk club either. I was involved in a minor altercation in the Garland a couple of years ago, and because it was the new landlord's opening night, got a ban! Unfortunately that's where the folk club is, as you probably know. But a bit of begging might resolve things, once I get round to it. I'm still on the fringes of the folk scene at the moment anyway, until I can contribute something decent, then I'll be right in there! I'll definitely try and meet you at Padstow or Wadebridge later on and say hello, and have a listen to Home Of My Heart too! damon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Joybell Date: 27 Mar 04 - 09:37 PM Well so far no luck with the Cornish Association singers here. The just-past Grand Bard of Cornwall has a large repetoire (he's my 5th cousin) and we talked Cornish songs recently at a festival here, but he's back home in Cornwall now and he's not online. If anyone can find him he might be able to help. Shouldn't be too hard to find - his name is John Bolitho. Good luck. Joy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Hawker Date: 28 Mar 04 - 04:15 PM Joybell! I know John quite well, I live about 12 miles from him! infact he was at my father in laws the week after he got back from Australia. I'll give him a ring and see if he can enlighten us at all! Great suggestion. Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Joybell Date: 28 Mar 04 - 06:17 PM Oh! Lucy please give him a kiss and a hug for me! He is one of my favourite people. I would love to keep in touch with him. Cheers Joy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Hawker Date: 29 Mar 04 - 11:46 AM Hello Joybell, Thanks for the pm,I gave your good wishes to John and he wished to be remembered to you too, he also said nice things about you! Lovely chap isn't he? Damon, the bad news is, nothing came to mind apart from those already suggested! can you not remember any more? Oh this is fun! - yes I too must lead a dull existence! Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Joybell Date: 29 Mar 04 - 06:13 PM Thanks Lucy. So wonderful to have nice things said about me in the land of my ancestors. Pity about the dead end for Damon - but you never know someone must know this song. Joy |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Damon Date: 31 Mar 04 - 08:24 PM Hello! I feel awful everyone's scratching their heads, but I've had a couple of days off the computer as it was taking me over! Anyway, I've been on the case. I had no luck at Radio Cornwall on Monday but will definitely speak to a woman called Cath Stephens there on Friday...this will turn something up, I feel sure...ish. Robyn, I've spoke to John the Fish the other day, and he didn't know it(!). I spoke to the secretary(?) of the Cape Cornwall Singers, who didn't know it; I spoke to Cheryl Maughan, neither she nor John knew it; and I went to the Wellie singing session in Boscastle tonight, asked a couple of people, still no luck! Lucy, I swear I've been racking my head for other lyrics, but I really can't remember a thing, unfortunately. The last time I heard it was within the last year, but it was at my parents house, just before Sunday lunch, loads of chatter, etc., and I couldn't concentrate on it, and I was hungry! Breezy, maybe you could let me know Dave Bryant's email or phone number, if you have them? Cats, that's an interesting idea but I can only remember one line, and I'm not 100% on the tune of it anyway. Maybe as a last resort I'll try humming it! So, no more dead-end talk from you lot...one and all, remember! cheers damon |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: Little Robyn Date: 01 Apr 04 - 03:07 PM Try John Buchingham at Padstow. He used to run a folk club and knew quite a few obscure songs. He helps produce the Padstow Echo and they may be able to print your request there if he doesn't know it. Or the other possibility would be Jan and Chris Ridley, also Cornish folkies from way back. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: GUEST,JB Date: 05 Mar 06 - 12:11 AM Don't know if Damon ever got this sorted, came across it all whilst searching for a download of Cornwall the Land I Love to play on the British Forces Radio Station in Iraq ! I am Station Manager of said station and though not born in Cornwall moved there when I was a kid. I have a copy of said tune on tape at home in Canada (I get around a bit) so could transcribe the lyrics if they are still being sought), agree with the comments, a lovely tune, we even interviewed Brenda on BFBS Radio many years ago when it first came out. Hi to all Janners from Newlyn and Penzance from JB, big brother of the late 'Benny' singer with Los Fabulosos who was lost, along with my other brother Tim, onboard 'Provider 2' 10 years ago, gone but like Brenda never forgotten. |

Subject: Lyr Add: CORNWALL THE LAND THAT I LOVE From: GUEST Date: 08 Feb 07 - 01:13 PM Lovely song.I always sing it when I cross back into Cornwall on the A30. I have just googled the lyrics without success so I thought I'd write them down to the best of my knowledge. There's one word that eludes me. I never thought before How much my country belonged to me Till I had gone many miles from my home by the sea Hedges aflame with furze Little white farm at the foot of a carn You belong to me Cornwall the land I love Kindred is strong This is where I belong In the land I love When I return to home People all stop and they say to me Hello my dear, so you're back home again And I be so proud to see the town Clock tower ?????? and market and quay All belong to me Chorus I know a sheltered cove Mussels on rocks and deep shrimping pools Pebbles and stones fit to fill up your pockets so full I know a scented hill Where the sheep browse on the sweet clover flowers That belong to me Chorus Down by the singing stream Mellow grey bridge where the boys all fish Woodpecker calling so clear from the wood on the ridge Yellow and white and blue Spangle the hedge every springtime anew And belong to me Chorus I never thought before How much my country belonged to me Till I had gone many miles from my home by the sea Hedges aflame with furze Little white farm at the foot of a carn You belong to me Chorus |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornwall, The Land That I love From: GUEST,Mark Humphreys (orig. from Newlyn) Date: 02 Nov 11 - 09:56 PM OK boys, Just got out of bed thinking about that song that my late mum and I used to laugh about so put the computer on to find it!. She was a top soprano singer and very straight laced when it came to her tastes in music and that song used to sound so very broad Cornish to her so as kids we used to tease her with it by imitating it. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCihuVJWRj8 play the clip from 0:57/2:16 to about 1:23/2:16 Happy days and hi to anyone from late 70s Gwavas Estate!! |
