My God! I just learned today that Rick died! I never met him but we wrote each other PMs from time to time. I'm so sorry to hear he is no longer with us. Duckboots, if you tune in from time to time, please know that you have my sympathy.

DougR

Please see the Jed Marum Tribute thread for April 16 and 18 in Washington DC.

Just saw this news. Very sad. Was introduced to him once on a trip to Toronto. Very sad.

Our friend Rick Fielding passed away Saturday evening March 20th after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

It's a month now. My thoughts and prayers are with those closest to Rick and Heather.

It felt to me, just now, like just for a moment, the whole world went still.

~Susan

This is an absence which keeps coming back up and cannot be wished away; I share yr feelings.

Heather, I hope you are managing, although I am sure I do not know how.

A

Hold Heather in your hearts, my friends. This is the first of many painful milestones.

I hop in and out and had missed this. I'll pop in my Rick cd tomorrow and cook and think of Rick (I'm not even cooking with onions). I've been so impressed with Rick's warmth on a couple of visits to Toronto, and with his humor, insight and good sense on this website. I knew that this was possible/likely, but it's still a massive hole. Condolances to you Heather. I'm working the weekend of the 5th, or I'd make a good effort to be in Toronto.

For the many who may have not read the thread about the European Mudgathering last weekend.

All music was live with one exception on Saturday night: Rick singing 'Handful of songs'. It was a very moving and adequate tribute.

I haven't been around much lately, so I only just found out. I'm very sorry to hear it. I only had a few exchanges with Mr Fielding but I do remember how much he loved the Round the Horne programmes as well as music. He will certainly be missed on Mudcat.

Best wishes to his family.

Isabel

It has been along time since I've been back to Canada, so I've only recently learned of Rick's passing.

I first met Rick when I was, oh, I'd say about 15-years-old, and he made a strong impression on me. He helped engender in me a love of folk ballads, but also influenced the way I see world, past, present and future.

I remain a union man to this day, thanks in part to him and his music. And as I make my way in the world I am often reminded of his songs, and find myself humming his tunes. In fact, as I sit to type I am struck by the fact that a few of the turns of phrase I rely on all these years later were borrowed from him and his tales, which were always well-tuned in the telling.

What a loss. What a man.

Condolences
