Silly sisters were great, and the other aforementioned combinations, but sibling sisters singing together are special - Lal and Norma, Jane and Amanda Threlfall (who are our guests at Herga next Monday)and Rachel and Becky Unthank (who dances too!).

Me and My "sister"(friend) sing alot duets in english and spanish! We sing so beautiful together.But my favorite duets are with Christina aguilera and Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey and alot of other people! Well Peace out!

The single most beautiful song I've ever heard sung by two women was "DUMBARTON'S DRUMS." sung by Evelyn Beers and Gerry Armstrong. They sang it in my living room, accompanied by Fiddler on his psaltery, about 35 years ago and I can call it to mind as clearly as if it happened last week. The DT says the Beers recorded it with Jean Redpath.

The Kossoy Sisters, Ellen and Irene. They appeared at the very first Newport Folk Festival in 1959. And their one and only LP from that era, Bowling Green, became a classic example of just how well urban folkies could do old-time Southern country music. Then they disappeared for more than 40 years, finally being rediscovered when one song from that old LP, I'LL FLY AWAY, appeared in the movie O Brother! Where Art Thou? Now in their mid-sixties, Ellen and Irene suddenly have a whole new career!

Christine Kidd heard Angie Wright sing "COAL NOT DOLE" at a singaround in Glen Clova and was very impressed. Pity the other half of Taggart and Wright was not there to lend a hand.

The Keane Sisters of Caherlistrane, County Galway. they sang in unison some of the best ballads and songs ever. Not many recordings, but every one a gem.

Thanks for your comments. Rowena and I still sing together,but now also sing in a three part harmony group calling ourselves Thorn and Roses. The guy who sings with us is Jinks Jenkin of Jinks Stack fame.
Who is this guy who taught us to sing?
We both sang individually, before we met at The Swan Folk club in Wadebridge MANY years ago!!

Having said that, some of my old favs which are easy to harmonize ("gospel" 3rds most of the way) & enjoyed by most audiences, are often overlooked 'cause they are from the old tried & true department (most are Traditional or in the public domain):

Bluegrass--MIDNIGHT ON THE STORMY DEEP--a Traditional song which has long been thought of as a powerful duet (with lyrics adjusted to all be in the female 1st person)

also, DON'T THIS ROAD LOOK ROUGH AND ROCKY or ANGEL BAND--gospel 3rds most all the way through, good to learn harmony.

Hymns---IN THE GARDEN, Sweet Hour of Prayer, or WHISPERING HOPE

Apart from the cat duet "Meeeeaouwww" (Lesley Garrett managed to do both parts by some technical wizardry!) - Macalias (Gill Bowman and Karine Polwart) - they are both a duo AND do duets when they sing two songs against each other, which harmonise and work very well, e.g. "FINE FLOWERS IN THE VALLEY" and "BONNY AT MORN"

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Indigo Girls who I would have to say is my favorite though Gillian Welsh and Allison Krause did a nice job on "Oh Brother" but I don't consider them a female duet since this was purdy much a one time thing...

Actually, doesn't the term "duet" mean a piece for two sohers/musicians, while the term for two singers performing together is normally "duo". I get the impression that emily rain, in starting this thread, was in fact using it in the former sense.

Although falling short of your gender requirement, the two albums by Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez have some great duets. I particularly like the song Confessions on their last album (Trainwreck records).

On her new CD, Nora Jones does a great duet with Dolly Parton (who seems to have done good duets with everyone).

Try Chris While and Julie Matthews too.

I also love the Silly Sisters. How about something slow to get started like "GREY FUNNEL LINE". What kind of accompaniment do you use? For old-timey stuff, I agree that you can't go wrong with the Carter Family and they may very well work out great if you're looking in your local library. Although they are a trio and get kind of complex, the group "Voices" with Cindy Mangson,(forgot the others) are wonderful.

Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard do wonderful old-time and bluegrass music-- I think they are particularly interesting for the way they put songs together as a duo.

If you are interested in old-time country music, a lot of original The Carter Family recordings featured Maybelle and Sara Carter doing some great duet singing. (A.P. was there, but he would sort of come in and then leave again, so in a lot of ways I would say their sound featured duet singing more than trio singing)

Po' Girl is a duo from British Columbia who are making waves these days. I haven't heard much of them, but what I did hear I thought was great.

The Indigo Girls are good! nice harmonies, good material.
I just heard aned saw them last night on satelite...a free concert.
Ann Hills and Cindy Mangsen have a duo album called "Never Grow Up"
Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick do an album togther called...."Together"
And Holly Near and Chris Williamson have a c.d. called Chris and Holly.
Then there is Trio.....not a duet, but good...Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt.
Another Trio is called Hot Soup!
There are a few sister acts--again maybe more than 2, but good
Burns sisters, Bird Sisters,
Again, more than two, but the Four Bitchin Babes are out rageous...
These are all favorites, oh i cannot narrow it down to just one!(or 2)

Just starting out with a new singin' partner, and looking for ideas. our first duet was "Prodigal Daughter" from Michelle Shocked's Arkansas Traveler, which went swimmingly. but then I thrust the Silly Sisters into her hand, and she seemed overwhelmed. :)
