Subject: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: SueB Date: 23 Mar 04 - 02:22 AM My dad used to sing this - Well, I hate to repeat but I must have meat for my 'taters and my gravy So Wilberforce Get off that horse and bring him in to lunch Oh a leg for me and a loin for you we can even cook the saddle too So don't say nay (neigh?) and ride away as if you never knew me Where the heck did this come from? And what's the rest? Suzanne |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: Sorcha Date: 23 Mar 04 - 01:22 PM This was a 1945 recording by FREDDIE "SCHNICKELFRITZ" FISHER & HIS ORCHESTRA. I didn't find the words, sorry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: Mark Ross Date: 23 Mar 04 - 04:59 PM I learned it from Kenny Hall, the great mandolin player and repository of old time music 30 years ago or so in California. If you asked where that song was from Kenny would point in the direction of stacks of 78's and say something to the effect of "3 feet up that second stack." By the way he was blind, also played fiddle and guitar, and was virtually a walking library of old time music styles, including Italian and Portugese tunes. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: musicmick Date: 24 Mar 04 - 01:07 AM I heard that on a 78 rpm record. I think that the other side was "Allright Louie, Drop That Gun". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: SueB Date: 24 Mar 04 - 02:08 AM You all never cease to amaze me. I have no doubt that in a matter of hours someone will have remembered all the lyrics, too, and be able to tell me what key it was in. Thanks! |

He's also in a band called Any Old Time if that helps with searching. Phil |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 27 Sep 09 - 07:25 PM Samuel Wilberforce was an English bishop who opposed Darwin and evolution. Wikepedia tells us: He was killed on 19 July 1873, by the shock of a fall from his horse near Dorking, Surrey. Huxley reportedly commented that Wilberforce's brains had at last come into contact with reality, and the result had been fatal. ========= I believe there could be a linking between 'Wilberforce' and 'horse' which lasted long enough in folk memory to lead to this silly song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: Stewie Date: 27 Sep 09 - 10:57 PM The 'Corner Boys' mentioned above by Phil is not a group, but the name of an album. This particular group of Cork musicians who play old-timey and bluegrass are called the Lee Valley String Band. The track on their 'Corner Boys' album on the Corner House label is titled 'Wilbur Forbes'. Below is my transcription - there's no much to it. The first part of line 3 could be something different from my surmise. WILBUR FORBES Long instrumental intro I love to eat so I must have meat for my taters and my gravy Wilbur Forbes, get off that horse and bring him in for lunch And I have ? and skins and things, enough to feed the navy Wilbur Forbes, get off that horse and bring him in for lunch My hospitality (horsespitality) I offers to ya, So don't say nay (neigh) and run away As if I never knew ya A loin for me, a groin for you We'll barbecue the saddle too Wilbur Forbes, get off that horse and bring him in for lunch Instrumental Repeat both stanzas above Instrumental Repeat second stanza Oh Wilbur Forbes, oh Wilbur Forbes, Oh Wilbur Forbes, oh Wilbur Forbes Get off that horse and bring him in for lunch The missing word in stanza 1 sounds like 'quims' which could be right given the 'loin' and 'groin' and 'feeding the navy'. Maybe it's a brothel. Just a thought. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, get off that horse From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Sep 09 - 02:44 PM The Library of Congress catalog of copyright entries lists: WILBERFORCE GET OFF THAT HORSE AND BRING HIM IN FOR LUNCH Words & melody by Freddie Fisher & Billy Austin New York: Northern Music Corp., 1943. * 78discography.com says WILBERFORCE GET OFF THAT HORSE was recorded by Freddie Fisher & His Orchestra as a single with PISTOL PACKIN' MAMA in 1943 on the Decca label. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wilberforce, Get Off That Horse From: GUEST Date: 20 Jun 10 - 11:42 AM My 80-something sister has asked me to find the complete lyrics to "Wilberforce Get Off That Horse" for her. She says the line is, "I've had beans and beans and beans, enough to feed the Navy," which makes sense. This record came out in 1943 during World War II (with its accompanying rationing of meat). My sister was in high school at the time of the song's release. I've been checking back on this thread for several months, hoping that someone else has the complete lyrics. |

A loin for me, a groin for you, we'll even eat the saddle too. |
