Subject: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life
From: Sandra in Sydney
Date: 23 Mar 04 - 07:28 AM

I half-heard a bloke speaking on the radio this morning about a photographer who gets her(??) subjects to bring in 6 items that represent their life.

So I thought about it today & decided the following are my life.

A teddy bear (I make them & collect them)
A book (I've been a reader all my life)
A poster for my folk club (always have a few in my bag)
A song printed out from Mudcat or another source (& always printed in 12 or 14 font Arial so I can read it!!)
Sushi (I take it to clubs & sessions & often have it for dinner)
A waistcoat (I'm never seen without one, ditto a hat but that would make 7 items)

what's your list?

sandra

To truly represent my life I'd need to bring in six other people. It is the people I've met that have made all the difference in my life. However, I'll try to play by the rules and list some things instead. In no particular order…

The Mudcat Adventure Guitar (a memento of one of the best times I've ever had and symbolic of the many people here whom I have grown to love so much)
A painting that Alice (in Montana) made of the family farm in West Virginia
A ceramic hand my mother made (It has a green thumb. She was quite a gardener.)
A set of woodcarving chisels my father used and then gave to me to use
I wish I had some objects other than photos to represent my two daughters; but I don't and so photos will have to suffice.
Two coins I still have from a trip to Ireland (mementos of the very best time I ever had)

Fishing rod/reel.
Guitar.
Knife.
Canoe paddle.
Hymn book.
Wedding ring.

Alternatively: family photo, pocket knife, mandolin...

I think I'll try the still-life photo. Cool idea.

Peace, Mooh.

Well, I'd have a hand (1) comin' in from the left side with pen (2) writing in a "I love you_________... See you tonight..." on a scrap of paper (3). Above the scrap of paper would be a rose (4) lying at a bottom right to upper left for composition with the hand's direction intersecting. Under the rose a cloth napkin (5) that extends off the top right portions of the scetch. with some contrasting folds with just a portion of one of it's corners overlapping the scrap of paper. The finish off the still life a crumpled scrap of paper (6) somewhere in the upper left area for balance and symbolism.

Now you know why I drove my professors nuts when I was in art school...

My fedora...
A Herco Thumbpick... probably the ugly yellow one...
My bodhran tipper...
My boots...
A copy of Neuromancer by William Gibson

Hey folks... why don't we post pics of our 6 items?

Dang... I gotta find a way to get my darts, my zippo, and my bag of Hnefatafl into the pic... along with a pint o Guin, and some maille... And a mini-disk...

I might need to bring way more than 6 items!

This is tough -

but I'd probably start using a panorama of the painted desert as the basic tableau - and there should be a roast turkey in there somewhere (a well roasted turkey is a thing of beauty)

Only six??!!?? Ya gotta be kiddin'!

a likeness of my dearly departed Kitty (of 20 years),

a pic of me with my fav guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel,

Perhaps, a likeness of myself (but much thinner with less chins, & really dark wavy hair [not on my chin]) as the Indian goddess with a hundred arms which are all holding (&/or playing? hard to hold a piano in a hand) all--or most of--my various Musical Instruments & maybe a couple of works of printed Music & a record or CD or 2 or 12,

pic of the old blonde wood console Hi-Fi on which I played records whilst growing up,

pic of my Irish Granny dancing a jig in her 60's!

& a bottle of groovy booze!

OK, Dr. Freud, analyze that.

what a great lot of lives!

and thanks to Mrs Duck for the pics. As a hat wearer I can certainly admire that wonderful hat. My favourite hat is a boater I've had for about 25 years. It's getting very decrepit, but is irreplacable cos no-one seems to wear boaters today. It didn't cost a fortune (I've never had one to spend!) but it of better quality straw than any other hats around.

Allan C: forget the rules - people can be significant items in life - who are they?

In her post Sandra encouraged me to set the rules aside and to list the people I would put in the picture. Now that I have completed the list, I am wondering if this might deserve its own thread. It was much more difficult to do than the list of things. I didn't include members of my family in the list because it is obvious that they would be a part of such a representation. Such a picture would include:

- a former teacher who recognized and encouraged my originality of thought.
- a woman from whom I learned the importance of having true friendship as the basis for a romantic relationship.
- a former patient of about my same age who awoke from a nap to discover she was paralyzed from the waist down and in a matter of hours, from the neck down as a result of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. From her I learned how quickly so much that we take for granted could be taken away from us.
- a former boss from whom I learned it was far more productive to discover the solution to a problem than to dwell upon who caused it.
- a farmer from whom I learned the true definition of selfless generosity.

Looking thru the lists it seems there are more cat Mudcatters (at least on on this thread!) than dog Mudcatters. I have dozens of cat pics, but haven't shared my home with a live one since I had a backyard (25 years ago!)

Only six? Hmmmm.....
1. Clancy the Wonderdog
2. Henry, the stuffed pooch I've had since I was born
3. The leather journal cover with the celtic knot design that Jason gave me the first Christmas we were together
4. The gold locket my maternal grandma gave me when I graduated high school that her parents gave her when she graduated high school that hangs on a chain that was a christening gift from her great uncle
5. The recording of my paternal grampa being interviewed by a folklore professor, kindly put on CD by my friend Fred
6. A large bookcase full of books
Oops! couldn't stop at six.
7. My seven year old nephew, Austin. The apple of his auntie's eye.

I would have my picture taken on my very first big trail building project in my ranger uniform. Might be kind of hard to lug the bookcase and all the books a mile into the woods, but hey, why not. Clancy could carry some and Austin could carry some... When you dream, dream big I say.

1 a Hip Flask Full of STROH 120%proof or William Hicks 127%proof Rum 9 because it is a "defining" thing and something I am "known for" in certain quarters )
2 a Bottle of Good red burgundy and a Silver Tastevin (cos I LOVE wine, drinking it tasteing it, reading about it ,leading tastings)
3 the small leather bag that I carry my diabetes pills around in(because they control and shape my life now and will forever)
4 Both my decree absolutes (important changes and turning points, that have moved me and prpared me to be where I now am )
5 the Red A5 book I carry the words of songs around in, (Those I have written and those I just like to sing) because song writing is an indespensible part of what I am,
6 My Crystal of quartz ( it reflects both the mystical and Scientific areas of my life, both contained in the same symbol as they both are in me)

and in the general area the intangible sound of singing, which is so important to me Now and will be always.

I don't have a still life, therefore I'm having trouble coming up with 6 things that might be considered constant.

Apart from music, which I can't figure out how to symbolize, I can come up with only four other things, in order of appearance.

A dog, a pair of boots, a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Junkies are always junkies and I started carrying my monkeys early.

2, Passport. Bit of an essential if I want to travel.
3, My camera kit, and enough film and flash cards for a year or two.
4, Gizmo, the ultimate in cat therapy after a stressful day.
5, My Leatherman Wave, I never go anywhere without it, and its rather handy for fixing Landrovers.
6, My walking boots.

I'm sending the pic to work to add to my screen savers & have also sent it to my friend & colleague who is always sending me pics of her beautiful cats.

Metchosin - instruments? records/CDs?, songbooks?, pic of favourite club/venue??

Easier but harder to edit! sink full of dirty dishes and coffee cups, ashtray full of cigarette butts, reems of paper, little bits of hay, set of car keys and a pair of boots.

I had such a great time re-reading this thread I wondered if any other Mudcatters would like to add their lists - or alter their original list!

1. A teddy bear (I make them & collect them)
2. book (I've been a reader all my life)
3. A poster for my folk club (always have a few in my bag)
4. A song printed out from Mudcat or another source (& always printed in 12 or 14 font Arial so I can read it!!)
5. Sushi (I take it to clubs & sessions & often have it for dinner)
6. A waistcoat (I'm never seen without one, ditto a hat but that would make 7 items)

1. the general word 'bear'would be replaced by a specific bear who now wears my old boater, it's a tad big for him, but I couldn't throw it away & the charity shops would certainly not want such a battered hat!

3. I no longer automatically carry posters around, so I'll replace it with the club banner

otherwise the list holds

3. A songbook, probably Alan Lomax or Jean Ritchie.
4. One of my antique cameras that belonged to my mother.
5. the Martin classical guitar that belonged to my brother
6. A handmade red clay water jug I used in El Salvador

3. book.    Reading and experiencing things I don't have time for.
4. pencil. Representing both writing and sketching
5. leaf.    Nature
6. Aurora Borealis over all. To symbolize the mystery.

I figure that if I stick to symbolism my list will hold.

I just remembered - years ago I went to a 'retreat' in the course of which we were instructed to draw on a large sheet of paper different images of ourselves in the course of our lives.

I found it a pleasing exercise. It became an almost mindless thing. In the middle of the things I drew, I sketched a child, maybe one year old, sitting with a ball on its lap.

But when the others saw it, they loved it and kept telling me that I had captured it all- a human being with the world on its lap.

I demurred, saying I had only drawn a ball.

But on inspection I had to agree- I had clearly drawn a couple of continents on my 'ball'.

I'm taking this premise quite literally just now. In a couple of months our local art association will have a show titled "Imagine That", aimed at getting more imaginative/non-realistic art than we usually get submitted. There will be a "people's choice" award competition. To be eligible for the competition, an art work must include at least 5 items from a list of ten:
footprint or handprint; timepiece; candle; words; egg; hat; flower; fiber; face; silverware.
So far I've put together this photo for one of my entries. We're each allowed 3 eligible pieces.

There are anumber of things this leraves out -- A miner's pick,
a half-smoked cigar, a condom, a sailboat, and a chestnut stallion come to mind, but I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. Don't ask me how I would represent the last two items. I am operating under my newly-renewed poetic license from the State of California.
