I'm so inspired by the thread on "how to make a maypole and dance around it"- I always teach a maypole dance to Sellenger's Round, but this year I have 3 classes so I want to do 3 tunes, one German and one Mexican.

Any ideas for good and easy dance tunes suitable for Maypoles?

Aine, darling, were you sneaking around outside my classroom today? I started teaching De Colores this very day! I've got the 3d-5th graders singing both verses in Spanish, the 1st and 2d graders just singing the second verse, and the kindergarteners chiming in with "quiri quiri quiri!" "cara cara cara!" and "pio pio pio!" where appropriate!

Our school is planning a "Rainbow Day" (don't ask- it was a 5th grader's idea!) for April 30 and we'll be singing this song and a few others ("Rainbow Tribe" by Steve Schuch for one) as well as enjoying the Maypole dances. It would certainly be appropriate for the dance to have the same tune. I wonder how it will sound on concertina- probably not all that bad!

Now, anyone know some good German polkas??
(I'm too tired to think for myself just now...)

Hey Allison, you know what they say about great minds (hehehehe). Your celebration sounds like it will be lovely, indeed.

I'll put my thinking cap on about the German polkas -- does it have to be German, or would some good Texas-Czech stuff do ya? Now where did I put those Brave Combo CDs...

Well, German only because This thread on maypoles mentions maypole dancing in Mexico and Germany (and other countries, but I've only got 3 classes, so....)

BTW, I grabbed my new-to-me Marcus concertina and was delighted at how sweet "De Colores" sounded in the traditional major-third harmonies- and how easy for this newbie to play! Thanks again, Aine!

Dang! I couldn't get your blue clicky to work. Maybe it will work later today.

I didn't know you played the concertina. I've had one for months now, but I've been too scared to play it. I'm so afraid I'll break something or other. But, I'm not surprised to hear that De Colores sounded so nice. It's such a beautiful tune.

I'm still thinking about the polka. I'll get back to you on that.
