I do not know how many of you are familiar with these folks,
but Jimmy and Nancy (Hawks and Eagles) have been performing
together for many years and have played at many festivals,
dances and programs at museums and classrooms, so you may
have seen them. Jimmy has beren Nevada State Fiddle Champion,
and Nancy is an incredible fiddler, as well.
They call their music "Cowboy Gypsy Music"
and here is their web site
Hawks and Eagles
Well, Jimmy has recently been diagnosed with cancer, and has
had surgery. Some friends are arranging a benefit performance
and auction to suppport Jimmy and Nancy and I am gathering
items for a silent auction. Of course Mudcats can P.M. me.
Here is the flyer I am putting together for this:
SEEKING DONATIONS OF ITEMS FOR SILENT AUCTION TO BENEFIT JIMMY
BORSDORF OF HAWKS AND EAGLES. EVENT TO BE HELD SUNDAY, MAY 2,
2004, STARTING AT 6 P.M. IN CHICO AT THE BEAN SCENE,
1387 EAST 8TH ST. CONTACT LAUREL TO ARRANGE DONATIONS
(530)533-3666 OR E-MAIL AT VERALOE@CNCNET.COM ITEMS MAY
INCLUDE: GOODS OR SERVICES, ESPECIALLY WITH A THEME OF MUSIC,
HAWKS, EAGLES, COWBOYS OR GYSPIES.

There are many local musicians donating their time and music
for this event, and we hope to show community support for
these folks who have given, and will continue to give so
much music the the world!!

Hi, Open Mike - I don't know how well he's known outside Central Northern California, and you and I are the only Mudcatters from this area. Ive met him, and I think my wife knows him quite well. I'll ask her to pass the word.

I will donate an eye exam (I am an optometrist in Georgetown, CA) and a copy of our band's CD. Band name is Old Time Confusion, CD title is Crooked Stovepipe. Thanks for doing this, Laurel. I vaguely remember playing tunes with Jimmy in the Bay Area many years ago with Roy Marshall and Pete McCracken, both now of Seattle. Us musicians have got to stick together. Maybe we need a musician's old folks home or something. Just a thought. Anyway, let me know where to send the CD. It was nice meeting you at Concow.

latest news....jimmy is in the hospital---he is in his last days or hours. Nancy is bravely sitting by his side holding a vigil. Please
send wishes, prayers, energy, what ever you may jto help him on his
way and to help her in her mission. We held a benefit for them in
spring and fall and they were both able to join in with the music
making and they have been a wonderful duo for many years now. Please
keep thm in your thoughts, light candles, and post here if you want
to send any messages thru me....Nancy is keeping a notebook and scrap
book for thoughts, cards, etc which might come her way. I do not know how long they will be in the hospital...by all signs it will not be long now. Here is their address if anyone who knows them has anything they want to send...or even if you do not know them....
Jimmy and Nancy Borsdorf
P.O. Box 2111

i would recommend not calling on teh phone...
as it will ring off the hook as it is!!

further news here...
from Delilah, one of Jimmy's fiddle students
who now plays with the Creole Belles, one of
the participants in the local folk music society
and friends of Jimmy's fund raiser benefit events.

Dearest friends,
It is with deep feeling and sadness that I write to you tonight
to say that Jimmy died at 6:45 this evening Tues, January 11th, 2005, in the Oroville Hospital surrounded by his devoted wife of 30 years, Nancy, and several close and very dear friends. Jimmy's hospital room has been full of music for 5 straight days and the list of family, friends and visitors is too long for this email.

A memorial is already being planned but in the meantime I take the liberty of thanking each and every one of you, on Nancy's behalf, for your many calls, generous monetary contributions and love over these past months.

Donations would gladly be accepted for Jimmy's memorial fund, and to help Nancy fulfill Jimmy's longtime dream of creating his children's museum of musical instruments.

In an effort to help Nancy please make checks payable to:
Delilah Lewis
151 Precita Ave
San Francisco, CA 94110
(415) 920-1875

Details about the memorial will follow
With love and again many thanks for your ongoing support and generosity.

Please forward this email on to anyone in your lists
that knew Jimmy whose address I might not have.
Thanks again,

Delilah

My last contact with him was on Christmas Day when i called to
let them know that i was doing a radio show that day and ask if
he had any request. He wanted to hear some old timey music, and
I found Breakin' Up Christmas by the Seeger Family. This was on
one of the Hawks and Eagle's recordings. Glad I was able to play
his request. I will remember him by keeping Old Timey music alive!!

Sorry to hear this news. I did not know Jimmy, but I've heard Utah speak of the Borsdorfs in glowing terms. My best wishes go out to Nancy and the rest of the big extended musical and actual family.

I knew Jimmy from way back in our hippy days at Kairos Coffee House in Sacramento, California.   A couple of years ago I ran into him in Old Sacramento where they (Hawks and Eagles) were peforming.   My son and I went with him and Nancy to their motel room and spent some time remembering the old days. It was great fun and Jimmy and Nancy were very kind to my son. Jimmy showed him some licks on guitar.
Since then I have taken up fiddle and always hoped to play a tune with him and Nancy some day. He was too young to go. Jimmy was a true individual.--Carrie Dye in Olympia, WA

I was in the health food store the other day, and I overheard the cashier saying that she had gone to the funeral of her uncle, a musician - and that the celebration and the music were wonderful. I asked if her uncle was Jimmy Borsdorf, and she said he was. She was pleased that I knew who he was and that I liked his music. One of the nice things about living in a small community.

I dedicated my radio show to Jimmy today, and Nancy came to the station to share some wonderful recordings of theirs. Some were ones which were offered at the memorial. many from re-mastered originals from long ago. Some of the archived sounds were from performances in Chico at a venue that has long since gone thru amy changes, but in the early 70's was called Aunt Martha's Kitchen, which later became Nellies. I played songs from fiddlers, and ones about cowboys and gypsies today. and last sunday Lorraine, the programmer at KCHO/KFPR, the Good Old Fashioned Folk Music Show featured some of Jimmy's recordings, too. He had hosted that show from time to time. His knowledge of music was wide and deep.
Nancy hopes to carry on his dream of having a museum (if not "actual" then "virtual" )where anyone, especially kids, can go to learn about instruments from around the world. The hope is that there will be
both visual images and sound bytes of many instruments, both common and rare. Nice to see you here Preston, and how wonderful that you were able to broadcast Jimmy and "Louie Bluey" He was truely a treasure. Look forward to more recordings to come form archived material.

I just had a thought the other day, after my boyfriend watched Bound For Glory, about dear Jimmy's memorial, and thought it would be nice to have a recording of everyone's wonderful efforts that day.

Did anyone do such a thing?? I would love to know at least that its out there..

I will see if there is such a recording....
Yes, Jimmy was in the movie Bound for Glory!

I had an extensive collection of their earlier work,
alas, most were lost when a forest fire took my house.

Nancy now often plays in a duo called Horse Sense.
