Subject: Who do you really hate!
From: GUEST,An English Patriot
Date: 27 Mar 04 - 05:46 AM

Who do you hate? I mean really hate. Who gets up your nose? Who do you have an all consuming hatred for? Who, in a fantasy world where you are a dictator, would you throw into the Tower of London simply because you cannot stand the sight of them. Whose name is it, the very mention of which, makes you froth at the mouth and boil over with anger, brings on apoplexy, and causes everyone else to look on with amusement? Who is it you hate and why do you hate them? I'm curious. Hate is always stronger than love. Hate focuses the mind. Hate brings the true self to the fore.

William Wallace was a patriot, Michael Collins was a patriot, Mandela was a patriot, Alfred the Great was a patriot. Patriotism is not necessarily the last refuge. It can be a higher calling. And life is never too short to hate. As my Dad use to say before he died:"The older I get, the more people I hate."

I'm sorry for your Dad, English Patriot, he must have died a deeply unhappy person.

Neither does one have to hate in order to be a patriot. Patriotism is associated with love (of country, of people, of ideals) and not with hate, which is more often a characteristic of bigotry.

So please don't sully the word "patriotism" by attempting to associate it with hate. The two don't go together.

What a thread to start...you must have lots of bitterness inside you for whatever reason. I am sorry for that, and I wish I could make it better for you. But hate won't help - trust me on that, I have seen from close up a lot more of the results of hate than most people have, and the outcome is never hapiness.

I'm not saying patriotism = bigotry. ElGreco and Eric the Red are implying that. You can hate people for any number of reasons. I'll tell you who I hate, and she is just one of many. Valerie Wilmer. She use to be a jazz critic for the Melody Maker in the 70s -Hate never forgets! Her supercilious, superior, sanctimonious scribblings use to drive me to distraction. Everyone was a racist apart from her. This is someone who knew everything about jazz except how to enjoy it. Her school-marm tone was patronising beyond belief. Black people had to accept her agenda or were labeled, implicitly, not directly, as an Uncle Tom. The blues artist Roy Brown fell foul to this insult from her. Music, to her, was a branch of sociology that exists purely for political purposes. The fact that people make music for the love of it and for no other reason, escaped her completly. She was also a photographer and a mighty mediocre one at that. She is the sort of person who takes a high moral tone so that they can look down thier noses at others. I hate the fucking bitch. God, that feels better now that I have got it off my chest.

I detest GW Bush, but I don't want to kill him.

Dislike, despise, abhor - yes. Hate - no, it's too strong, I agree with Kendall's definition.

I dislike the combination blue-green; hundreds of mindless pop (pap?) songs of the 70s and 80s; certain people's habits, like picking their nose and then eating the bogey (yeechh); Tiny Tim's voice; my own picture in the mirror (too fat).

I despise George Bush (both of them); Kirk Douglas (for his views and behaviour on gun control); my own smoking habit (not of others).

I abhor racism; bigotry; fame-for-fame's-sake; muzak.

I wouldn't kill any of the above, with only one exception: my smoking habit, which I am trying to kill, but have only managed to maim it severely so far. I am gathering steam to deliver the final blow.

I hate the guy who wrote this biography of Balthus I'm trying to read, with his psychological bullshit. I hate the kids on Barney, and I do want to kill Barney.

Hatred may put a spring in your step and roses in your cheeks, if adrenalin is your drug of choice, but it's a very bad way to make decisions in the real world. Judge Jeffries was a hater. (You Brits should know who he is.) Would you rather have his place in history or Nelson Mandela's? Mind you, that doesn't keep me from doing it privately.

I find it interesting that this thread, this name, is started by one who does not want to join the community, rather just post using several nom de pleume's. Seems to me that it just demonstrates a certain unhappiness in their lives. But I must give GUEST,English Patriot credit. At least s/he is trying to keep it to an honest discussion of this subject. I can remember when I used to hate a lot of people. I was afraid of them. Specially when I was a school kid and a teenager. I'm not afraid of them any longer, therefore I don't hate them.

There are people who annoy me, people who bug me, even people who repel me, but that's not hate.

I also agree with Clinton Hammond on this one.

I've tasted hatred and swore that I would "have my day" with a couple of people in my past. The truth is that as I get older, if the opportunity came to even a score, I probably wouldn't want to waste the energy on them.
Hate is a horrible term and implies a thoughtless negativity usually borne of an instinctive reaction to something unpleasant that, in time, will hopefully be replaced with a more appropriate description of your dislike, maybe even "pity".
There are too many loathsome individuals in the world, and to begin to list the people I dislike (for whatever reason) seems a rather pointless exercise, given the fact that nobody is likely to be much interested in who gets under my skin, although it does give some indication as to the type of person you are.
Wouldn't it be much easier to talk about your likes and preferences?
Who and what you love will say more about you and make far more interesting reading.
C-flat.

I'm beginning to wish I had never started this thread, which, in truth, is pretty light hearted. I believe no-one when they say they don't hate other people. It's a feeling that we all have. To say otherwise is, in my opinion, to deny human nature. Afterall, we all have heroes (at least I do-and I'm thinking of starting a thread for that)so if you love someone for their admirable, or what you consider admirable, qualities, you can hate someone for their negative, or what you percieve as negative, qualities. You make a judgement based on a gut feeling. For instance, I cited Valerie Wilmer earlier on as my particular focus of hatred. This is based purely on her public broadcasts, journalism, etc. If I met her, who knows how I might feel about her. I might be very fond of her as a person. She might be a cow. I don't know. All I do know is that when ever I hear her on the radio or read her journalism, something in me seethes with hatred. It just happens. I cannot help it. Incidentally, I wish her as a person no harm.

Engish Patriot - I understand your feelings regarding Valerie Wilmer perfectly. And I agree that there can be a funny side to this sort of thing. It's mostly a question of semantics.

For instance: I can't stand the teletubbies. I detest most of Frank Sinatra's song catalog (though I must admit he was a very good performer). Paul Anka's recordings make me sick! And so it goes... :-)

All depends on the context, doesn't it?

Hate is a lot like infatuation, in my opinion. In fact, I see it as actually being a form of infatuation. I can choose to put my energies into that sort of thing or not. The choice is always mine. Putting my energies into infatuations or into hatred is not interesting to me, so I choose to not put my energies into either of those things.

Teenage girls use the term losely when discussing likes and dislikes -- they LOVE this movie star and HATE that one... But this has nothing to do with the genuine emotuion of acute or chronic hate as grown, independent individuals feel it, with its overtones of the wish to destroy.

So I suppose you need to be clear on the semantics you are invoking.

By hate I mean strongly dislike for some reason. it could be because of their manner, their attitude, their politics, style, anything. So I guess I'm with the teenage girls here. I "hate" Tony Blair for his politics and his style. However, if I ever got to know him - fat chance! A bit above my social circle - I don't doubt for a moment that I would like him. I have freinds with whom I profoundly disagree but with whom I remain good freinds. To prove my point,I have a freind who both likes "Titanic" and is an admirer of Ken Livingstone, and yet I still go out drinking with him.

I don't hate anyone. Too much energy and bad vibes. This is not to say that there aren't people who I heartily despise or even just plain can't stand the sight, sound or thought of. I MIGHT have the ability to hate them if I were around them all the time, but I prefer to avoid people who inspire violent impulses in me. It'll keep me out of jail, for one thing.

Ah -- we're using the light social definition, not the deep "glare of vaporization" one.

Well, I hate noise polluters -- high-amp car stereos are an example -- who think the solution to a flaccid persona is to steal other people's space and fill it with their antisocial vibes. Rap on a ghettoblaster has the same effect. Cars with poor mufflers, and motorcycles intentionally left undermuffled. Loudly chirping traffic light signals. I think the world must have been a lot more pleasant sounding 150 yrs ago, even if other issues were a lot tougher.
