Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper From: GUEST,flyingcat Date: 05 Apr 04 - 08:40 AM There's not much left to be said. Like everyone else, the Copper family's love and enthusiasm for singing have had a great influence on me since I was introduced to them in the late 60's. Bob was a wonderfuly kind and generous man and I count myself honoured to have met and spoken to him. He was one of my heroes. My best thoughts to the family. Moira Craig |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper From: GUEST, Chris Smith Date: 05 Apr 04 - 08:34 AM Vic Smith, from the Royal Oak Folk Club in Lewes, has written an obituary for our local 'Sussex Express' newspaper: Bob Copper (6th January 1915 - 29th March 2004) With the death of Robert James Copper, English traditional song has lost its inspirational doyen. On 25th March, Bob went with son, John, daughter Jill and son-in-law Jon Dudley to Buckingham Palace to be invested with his richly deserved M.B.E. For all four, the rich experience was hugely enjoyable. Three days later the four of them came to Lewes for a celebratory lunch; another great occasion and one that was full of laughter. In the afternoon, Bob became unwell and was taken to hospital where he died the following afternoon with his close family around him. Bob will be mainly remembered as the superb interpreter of his family's fine heritage of traditional songs that can be traced back through the generations to the eighteenth century, but he was also very successful as writer, poet, painter, illustrator and song collector. Despite the modesty that pervaded every conversation with him, he showed rare personal qualities that enabled him to motivate and encourage all the many people who came to talk with him. He, himself, was profoundly pleased to see that he had ensured continuity in the family's cultural legacy by seeing his children and Jon and six grandchildren carrying on singing the songs. In his later years, Bob and the Coppers had enjoyed widespread recognition for their unique family harmony singing and they had travelled far and wide to sing them including a number of trips to the USA. Bob has received, in recent years, an honorary degree from the University of Sussex, a Gold Badge from the English Folk Dance and Song Society and the Good Tradition Award, a lifetime achievement award from the BBC; all testimony to his predominant and outstanding contribution to the furtherance of English folk song. "We will never see his like again" is a phrase that has become clichéd, but in this case it is true. Bob has been that important link in the continuity of the songs from the days of a relatively healthy state around the First World War, through the difficult years of the 1930's when he and cousin Ron seemed to be part of a tiny minority to maintain enthusiasm for the songs, through to a time when there has been a revival of interest and a long overdue recognition of the part his family has played. National newspapers and TV and radio stations on three continents have carried tributes to the man. Many friends and fans as well as his supportive family have been left feeling bereft and Sussex has lost one of its greatest sons. VIC SMITH |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper From: DMcG Date: 03 Apr 04 - 03:24 AM here is 'The Guardian' obit., taken from this link Sussex's master folksinger Michael Grosvenor Myer Saturday April 3, 2004 The Guardian Bob Copper, who has died aged 89, was a leading member of the famous singing Copper family of Rottingdean, East Sussex, and an important collector of English folksongs. His earliest musical memories were of sitting around the fire singing with his father, Jim, and his grandfather James Copper, who was born in 1845. Indeed, a paper on the songs of James Copper and Thomas Copper, Bob's great-uncle, was presented at the inaugural meeting of the English Folk Song Society in 1899, while some of their songs were printed in the first number of the society's journal. The Copper family have lived in Rottingdean, where Bob was born in a farm cottage, since the 16th century - Kipling mentions them in Rewards And Fairies. The family were not gentry (Bob's father would tell of having been caned at school for forgetting to raise his cap to the parson), but were always respected members of the community, working as farm bailiffs, publicans, policemen and and even, occasionally, as soldiers. Bob's father was the bailiff of a large estate, and as a boy Bob helped with farm chores, such as bird-scaring. He left school at 15, went to work in the village barber's shop and then became a soldier, briefly serving in the Life Guards before joining the West Sussex constabulary. (But, as his son John once told me, he gave that up because he was getting too much chaff from his friends about being PC Copper.) Until the folksong revival of the 50s brought the family fame and recognition, Bob and his cousin Ron, who died in 1978, kept alive the family songs. Grandfather James had written down a few for the daughters of his employer, a local farmer - one, for instance, he entitled Hears A Dew Sweet Loveley Nancy. In 1936, his son Jim, Bob's father, collected nearly 50 of his songs into a book which the family still carry with them to all their gigs. It was dedicated to Bob. All these songs had been learned orally, at father's or grandfather's knee as he repaired shoes or mended sacks, or within the family circle. In their youth, Bob and Ron would often treat the tradition with a certain levity. "While one of the old boys would be singing 'Oh, the mistletoe bough, Oh the mistletoe bough'," Bob confided to me once, "Ron and I would be sat in the corner mouthing 'Oh, the miserable row, Oh the miserable row'!" But Bob had always, in fact, loved the family's tradition, to which he paid tribute in a poem he wrote in 1947 called The Old Songs (this was set to music and sung by Peter Bellamy shortly before his early death). Then in 1949, Bob's father told him that he had been listening to a BBC Home Service programme called Country Magazine in which someone had sung one of "our" songs, "only he got the words wrong". Bob wrote to the presenter Francis Collinson, who hastened down to Rottingdean, where he recorded several songs from Jim, Bob and Ron at the Central Club in Peacehaven, a social centre run by Bob and his wife Joan, whom he had married in 1941. This encounter triggered a relationship with the BBC, for Bob who himself became a wandering collector and recorder of songs around Sussex and beyond. Bob also featured in a Sunday morning radio programme, As I Roved Out, which was broad cast from the Central Club in 1953 and 1954. A collection of his recordings later became a book, Songs And Southern Breezes, published in 1973, with a foreword by John Arlott. By the time of Ron's death, Bob's son John was waiting to take his place to provide the harmonies that make the Copper family singing so distinctive. Later, the line-up expanded to include John's wife Lynn, his sister, Jill Copper, and her husband John Dudley. Even more recently, John's and Jill's children have joined in too. Bob, his son and daughter and their spouses and children can all be heard, for instance, on the English Folk Dance and Song Society's recording Coppersongs (1987), singing Thousands Or More. Towards the end of his life, Bob frequently expressed the greatest satisfaction that the family's fine tradition was safe for at least the next two generations. Shortly after his 87th birthday, Bob went to New York to meet the American folksinger Pete Seeger, five years his junior, whose work he had long admired. A programme featuring their conversation, songs and views on their family traditions and on folksong in general was broadcast on Radio 4 in January 2002. Bob Copper's contribution to folksinging was recognised by the English Folk Dance and Song Society in 1978, when he was awarded its Gold Badge; he received an honorary degree from Sussex University in 2000. Four days before his death he was invested with an MBE. He is survived by his two children and six grandchildren. His wife died in 1983. · Robert (Bob) James Copper, folksinger, born January 6 1915; died March 29 2004 |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper From: Carly Date: 02 Apr 04 - 04:16 PM What sad news! Bob Copper's songs and writings had a profound effect on my life, many years before I met him in person. I was fortunate enough to eventually have been able to spend time with him (and later with other members of his family, as well,) through the Folk Alliance, Pinewoods Camp Folk Music Week (CDSS) and during concert tours. I treasure those experiences. In fact, one of the high points of my musical life came while sitting in the audience of the Copper's first concert of their first tour of the U.S. (That is, with John and Jill and Jon - Bob and Ron had been here decades before.) They began their first song, everyone in the room sang back, and they fell off their chairs in amazement and delight. After the second or third song it became clear to them that we knew and appreciated their repertoire and were thrilled to have them there. I don't think that they understood until that moment how Bob's work in preserving both music and culture had had a huge impact on our side of the pond. By then, many of us were reduced to tears and laughter at their obvious excitement; the rest of that concert was an incredible celebration of the power and joy of singing. Thank you, Bob Copper, for sharing your passions with us, and for the many gifts you have left us. Thank you for your kindness, and your humor, and your great charm. My deepest sympathies to John and Jill and Jon, and the rest of the family. I hope that it is a comfort to you to know how many people hold Bob in their hearts. Carly Gewirz |

This is not to be confused with an O.B.E., or Officer of the British Empire, although both are different levels of award within the overall 'Order of the British Empire'. Naturally these awards have their origins in history, dating from a time when we still had an empire... Anyone interested can read more about it here: http://www.cabinet-office.gov.uk/ceremonial/index/history.htm At the Royal Oak Folk Club in Lewes this evening a few informal words in tribute to Bob were spoken by Vic Smith (the organiser), by Martin Carthy (the evening's guest performer), and by various members of the audience, including Shirley Collins. Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Ranks Date: 30 Mar 04 - 04:19 PM That is sad news. I just had a few good drops on Bob and sang my way through a "song for every season". I bought my first Copper-record (Bob and Ron) when I was sixteen. On my first trip to England in 1982 I visited their Club but did not meet Bob. I bought the book from John and when he sent me the other two, John sent me a tape with Bob accompanying himself on Concertina. It was recorded in his garden and one sometimes can hear a bird sing. This is still my favourite tape in my collection. I met Bob a couple of years later, when I was there with a TV-team. He was such a great man. I will forever remember that morning when the family sang for us. It was so emotional for me, that the occasional tear came running down my cheeks. A day after that I had to give a copy of that Video to Peter Bellamy, who was a friend of mine since I met him in the Copper`s Club. So I would agree: If there is a place like heaven, the two will already have shared a lot of songs til now. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Dave Bryant Date: 30 Mar 04 - 05:13 AM I suppose we always knew it would have to happen some day, but it still came as a shock and leaves a sort of empty feeling and it's hard to know what to say. I have to admit that I first heard of the Coppers through the singing of The Young Tradition. I can remember how in the mid 60s, three of us drove down for a weekend's camping in Sussex. Our main reason was to find Bob and his cousin Ron and to ask for the words of a couple of their songs. We went into the "Queen Victoria" Saturday lunchtime and saw Ron who said "You're in Luck, Bob's due to be popping in any time now". They sang us a couple of songs, before they had to go out and Bob told us to come over to Peacehaven club that evening. We had a wonderful evening, with Ron joining Bob later and then Ron suggested that we might manage another session in the Victoria the following lunchtime. Bob had let us copy any of the songs which we wanted out of a copy of "Brasser's" songbook and we went back up to London after a wonderful weekend. After Ron's death it was a great relief when he carried on singing with the his two children Lohn and Lynne and later on of course with his grandchildren as well. He will be remembered. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Richard Bridge Date: 30 Mar 04 - 02:36 AM Let us hope the songs he preserved for us will live on, that they will inspire a myriad new arrangements, but that the originals will live for ever. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Little Robyn Date: 30 Mar 04 - 02:24 AM A sad loss today but his legacy will go on forever. Robyn |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: treewind Date: 30 Mar 04 - 02:12 AM A lovely man who did so much work for English folk song and always had a twinkle in his eye. I've just noticed that today is the anniversary of the Song Links concert at Cecil Sharp House, which was the last time I saw him. I feel privileged to have met the man. I hope he gets some sort of memorial in the House, next to the one they're now planning for Fred Jordan. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: The Admiral Date: 30 Mar 04 - 02:08 AM Rest in Peace Bob after a long and full life, you'll be long remembered... Tony and Pearl |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: greg stephens Date: 30 Mar 04 - 01:46 AM Bob's writing and singing sums up for me that elusive quality of "Englishness". I've sat in the Social Club in Peacehaven late at night looking at the family's original songbook lying on the table among pints of beer, and I thought it was considerably more impressive than having the crown jewels spread out in front of you. The Coppers and their songs were the country's real crown jewels. Bob was just great. Read his books and listen to his records and give thanks. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Padre Date: 30 Mar 04 - 12:46 AM Condolences to the Copper family. His legacy will live on. Padre |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: George Papavgeris Date: 29 Mar 04 - 10:58 PM A lovely man, and he would be missed for that anyway. His work deserves the tag "labour of love" more than anyone else I know - and he will be missed for that also. One consolation is that he was happy and active to the end. Let the world ring with the songs he brought us tonight and every night for generations. Rest easy, Bob. GP |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: GUEST, NOMADman Date: 29 Mar 04 - 10:45 PM Condolences to his family. Bob was a great man whose contributions to the preservation of traditional folk music were immeasurable. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Stephen R. Date: 29 Mar 04 - 10:25 PM Memory immortal! The collectors of a century ago were convinced that the tradition was maintained only by illiterate octogenarians; Bob is one of that noble company in whom it has been going strong until our own days. May there be more Coppers singing out in 2104! Stephen |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Amos Date: 29 Mar 04 - 09:58 PM I raise a glass here to another hero that I didn't get to meet or sing with, alas. May he find himself singing duets with Rick Fielding in heaven -- and be half--way through the first chorus before the Devil learns he's dead! :>) Best regards, A |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Dave Swan Date: 29 Mar 04 - 09:42 PM What bad, bad news. We were lucky enough to open for the Coppers when they played the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Bob asked us onstage to sing with the family at the end of the night. It'll never get better than that for me musically. Beyond his music, he was a sweet, warm, funny man, and one of the finest blues air guitarists ever, but that story is another night and another bottle of beer.... Condolences to John, Jill, Jon and the next generations. I'll hoist a pint for Bob tonight. Fear no more the heat of the sun. D |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Art Thieme Date: 29 Mar 04 - 09:20 PM Bob and Ron were the best. Condolences to all the family. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: BanjoRay Date: 29 Mar 04 - 07:51 PM Bob was the real thing - there aren't many left on either side of the pond - a very sad time. Ray |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 29 Mar 04 - 06:00 PM I came to the music of the Copper Family a bit late, but I found it much to my liking. I am so sorry to read here of Mr. Copper's passing. Please extend my condolances to all his family. Jim Hickam |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Crane Driver Date: 29 Mar 04 - 05:40 PM So many of us came to "real" folk music (whatever that is) through this wonderful man and his family. Our debt to him and them is incalculable. He will never really leave us, as long as the "Old Songs" continue to be sung. Andrew |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Murray MacLeod Date: 29 Mar 04 - 05:25 PM I knew that one day I would log on and see these dread words. Thanks for posting the news Mary, condolences to Bob's family and to everybody in the Sussex folk scene, it is a sad day indeed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Dead Horse Date: 29 Mar 04 - 05:21 PM A "grand old man" in every sense, and a gentleman, too. To have heard him talking of the old days is a memory I will cherish. Condolences to his family. The Coppers will, no doubt, continue the tradition, but with an empty seat. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: RichardP Date: 29 Mar 04 - 05:18 PM Correction: OBE = Officer of the Order of the British Empire, more prestigious than MBE = Member of the Order ... Fully deserved. Richard |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Bill D Date: 29 Mar 04 - 05:14 PM I was honored to have met him twice on trips to the US...he was a delight and a gentleman and has left us so very much in music and history. I think I will go play some of his music tonight in remembrance..... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: GUEST,McGrath of Altcar Date: 29 Mar 04 - 04:55 PM I loved his book, and the tunes in the back with the harmony included were a formative influence. I did A-level music and the rules of harmony we were taught there were stupid. This little book showed me that you could use parallel thirds and that TE did not necessarily have to rise to DOH. An OBE is a medal - the Order of the Britsh Empire Mike. - it's a medal given by (?) the Queen for, in Mr. Copper's case, services to folk music. Very well deserved. He was a true inspiration to me at a formative time. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Willie-O Date: 29 Mar 04 - 04:47 PM OBE = Order of the British Empire. An honour which he received only last week! Hot off the wire on Maplepost: "Just wanted everyone to know the sad news that Bob Copper passed away this afternoon, at approx. 4:30 pm GMT. He was surrounded by his family, and did not suffer. Bob had just been granted an OBE last Thursday, and had the chance to hear Prince Charles say "Imagine, a Life Guard who sings folk songs!" He had had a big celebration yesterday with the family, so enjoyed himself right through the last of his 89 years. Phyllis Barney, Executive Director North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance" It isn't how long you live, it's what you do with what time you have. Bob Copper obviously had the best of both. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Susan of DT Date: 29 Mar 04 - 04:43 PM I have loved the Copper Family music since I found it around 1970. Eventually I met Bob when he began to cross the pond - he was a wonderful man. He took such pleasure in seeing people sing. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: RichardP Date: 29 Mar 04 - 03:59 PM For me, and I suspect many others, it was Bob and his family which transported us from the relative shallowness of the revival to the reality of the thriving tradition. He will be enormously missed. Richard |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: Cap n' Ella Date: 29 Mar 04 - 03:44 PM So sorry to hear the very sad news of Bob's death and we send our deepest sympathy to his family. Tony Petty & Lesley Massey |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Copper OBE From: John MacKenzie Date: 29 Mar 04 - 03:44 PM As important as RVW and Cecil Sharpe in his way, and at least he didn't change the words to suit sensitive ears. A monumental loss to British traditional music. John |
