What have you done? (to annoy a critic)

Following on from the Is there a Folk Club mafia thread, have you ever been to one of those places where there is a disapproving soul who rather wound you up into doing something to annoy them?
I was at a session once where someone sang a parody and a lady singer very vociferously voiced her disgust at parodies, strangely enough the whole evening after that was a succession of parodies, which I am sure would not have happened if she hadn't been so high on her horse - and many a great folk song we know and accept today is infact a parody to an even earlier folk song. I bet she wished she'd stayed quiet though!

Yes. I was 'instructed' not to sing a certain Pat Sky song because it contained a few bad words. Before he said that I had absolutely no intention of doing the song. I had three songs at that particular hoot, so I did the song three times. Told the audience why. Audience loved it and sang along to all three.

I once visited a folk club not too distant from my present abode, to see Les Barker perform. I took with me a group of friends who are also fans. The rest of the audience were not quite so "appreciative" or familiar with his works as we were. We weren't being any more rowdy than usual, but it did rather look like that, what with the rest of the audience being stony silent and looking like they'd been to the local taxidermist.

During the break, there was obviously a lot of discussion with the regular members and the MC, because when the second half started, the MC entreated us to 'keep it down a bit and not to make so much noise'. At this, Les was introduced again, he took one look at the stony faced MC and said 'Do you want one you can join in with?'

Needless to say, it went down hill from there!

I know someone who took exception to an EXTREMELY off-key drunken rendition of a long long song by one of our regulars. He was next on, and proceeded to sing in one key and play in another. It was VERY clever, and VERY funny to those of us that realised what he was up to.
There were a few shocked & puzzled faces though

A 'folk club not far from you'? There is an club not far from me that puts on excellent artists but when they do chorus songs the audience never join in. On one occasion the performer asked them to join in, but when the scattering of us at the back did we got some very odd looks from the front.

I went to a club once where no-one sang along & it was really strange. They all sat around tables in groups, had their own private little parties & applauded politely, tho! My club is famous for it's acoustics & it's singing audience, & I try to book acts we can sing with.

Another strange evening at a third venue had the MC hoping the booked act (singer/songwriter) was not doing a particular song cos "we" - MC's group - wanted to do it. Guest was not apreciative cos he had previously asked MC's group not to sing their version of the song as it lost all meaning the way they rearranged it. Near the end of the evening MC asked guest how many songs he had left. 3 was the answer. Oh, just do 2 cos we want to hear someone's instrument solo again. Guest was very restrained all evening & we never went back (strangely enough)
