Can anyone think of some catchy names for an old time music group ?
I'm having the hardest time trying to think of something good.
We are a 5 piece....gospel, bluegrass, old country group.
Thanks for any ideas you send this way.

For anyone wanting a band name, there is the
Band Name Generator Page . Keep going to this page until you find a name you like. It is simple so even Old Timey bands can do it.

The folk trio I'm in is Three Sheets To The Wind. Used to be in an Irish dance band - The Black Velvet Band.

My experience is that you just have to keep ploughing through the dross until you find something acceptable.

I've performed with (and helped name)

Common Ground
Ruck Fugby and the Bootfallers
Slippery When Wet
Zentai Futon and the Tofu Supremes
Contraband
No Right Turn
One Step Forward
Bite the Wax Tadpole
Baldrick and the Cunning Plans
Never the Twain
and of course, Cloudstreet

(You can't always overcome the dross completely)

Thanks for the suggestions ! They all sounded great. Common ground was my favorite though.

The name should also advertise the "vibes" you want to put out. For example, and given that there are 5 of you, you could have:

Fist (show dynamism)
A Fistful Of Notes (AFON for short - tongue in cheek name)
Pentatonic (could be joked over as "catatonic")
Pentogram (harmonic connotations)
Five's A Crowd

etc etc

The best name I've come up with is "Further Ado." It's a slam/dunk for booking. Everyone will want you to do their wedding. You may send me 10% of your take as a royalty.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sorry, I've already taken "The Acoustic Scratch Band" - even got a Yahoo list for it... :-)

P.S. but you are welcome to join in if ever you are near me...

Obscure song titles are quite good for names, especially if you have the song as a mainstay in your performances.

I always wanted to name a band 'Black Velvet' but it would work better for a bluesy one than an old timey band. Even better for one that sang the song!

After going ruling out a few names such as Wheel Well (as in, "How did you guys sound last night?") and Two Guys Not Ralph, we settled on Toulouse Cruise (another play on words, "Two Loose Screws"). If I was to start up something in the future, I would probably go with "Dervish" -- I think it has an energetic feel to it, along with being catchy.

Now, if you're in Eastern Canada, don't use that name -- I might need it someday!

Brian
