Old mate of ours, Eddie Tonks(known him a while, but we have to admit he is getting wrinkly)is looking for words & music to this song. All he has is the memory of it sung & this fragment:-
the oak ash & thorn
in the winter are gone
but life still goes on
in the old evergreen

Can any one help make an old man happy?
Doxy

I have a vague recollection that it's a Peter Bellamy song ...

How to make an old man happy - take 2:

No it's not Peter Bellamy - you're thinking of his Kipling setting of Oak Ash And Thorn....

Actually, Evergreen was writ by that excellent Teesside songwriter Richard Grainger. He recorded it on a 1989 LP "Darklands", on the Folksound label, catalog number FSLP8. It also appeared on cassette but never made it to CD unfortunately. It contains some really good material. Evergreen is a fine song, not sung often enough nowadays - the group Firm Friends do a good version though. The LP has a lyric sheet with it, so I'll gladly post the text for you when I get a minute to locate it, no problem.

As sung by Firm Friends

EVERGREEN
by Richard Grainger

I've got oak, ash and thorn with summer green leaves
Barley and corn that we gather in sheathes
But when autumn's brown strips the trees to the bone
The leaf of the evergreen lives on

Chorus
Evergreen, evergreen, bring me a leaf from the old evergreen
The oak, ash and thorn , in the autumn are gone
But life still goes on in the old evergreen

In the height of the day he flies in to mind
And lovers walk past me but I know their kind
Though their love, like an oak, in the springtime grows strong
It withers and fades when it's season is done

There is a forest, I know you will find
Where there's all kind of trees with their thorns and their spines
But all will surrender when winter marches in
Where the chilly north wind blows - lives evergreen

You just beat me to 't Nutty. Here's the words from the Grainger album lyric sheet, freshly transposed this very morn!

EVERGREEN
(Richard Grainger)

I've got oak, ash and thorn with summer green leaves,
Barley and corn that we gather in sheaves,
But when autumn brown strips the trees to the bone
The leaf of the Evergreen lives on.

(Chorus:) Evergreen, Evergreen,
Bring me a leaf from the old Evergreen;
The oak, ash and thorn in the autumn they're gone,
But life still goes on in the old Evergreen.

At the height of the day she flies into mind
And lovers march past me, but I know their kind –
Though their love, like an oak, in the springtime grows strong,
It withers and fades when its season is gone.

And there is a forest I know you will find,
Where there's all kinds of trees with their thorns and their spines,
But all will surrender when winter marches in –
Where the chilly north wind blows, lives Evergreen.

Repeat first verse.

Great song!

See y' around Doxy - probably at Lancaster over Easter. Regards to trimrig!

Struggling a bit with the doxy image since we got married Trimrig & Mrs Batters doesn't have quite the same ring to it. But it makes me smile!!!!! and it was a brilliant party.
I don't suppose any of you wonderful gents has notation for this as well................
Just can't satisfy some women
