Nothing in Roud resembling this under 'Johnny, Molly or When will we be married'. Perhaps they meant the tune was trad.

Hmmm.
Not British traditional. And it's not in any of my extensive indexes.
There are plenty of Johnny and Molly songs but this isn't any of the ones in my indexes. I'll have a look at the Roud Index. Is that the title as given on the CD?

This is what I have in mind:

(They use "The Tenpenny Bit" as an instrumental break).

I heard somebody play the tune in a session last week; they thought it was an Irish polka but couldn't remember where they got it. I used to hear the song in sessions about ten years ago.

WHEN WILL WE BE MARRIED?
(Traditional)

When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed
When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed

You have your eye on Jimmy
long Jimmy Lee
You have your eye on Jimmy
anda fine man he
You have your eye on Jimmy
but you'd better let him be
Because when you go, Molly-o
you'll be gone with me

When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed
When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed

You have your eye on Johnny
thin Johnny Fee
You have your eye on Johnny
and a fine man he
You have your eye on Johnny
but you'd better let him be
Because when you go, Molly-o
you'll be gone with me

When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed
When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed

I made a black bow
for your pretty head
When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
I made a black bow
for your bonny head

When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed
When will we be married Molly
when will we be wed
When will we be
bedded in the same bed

Both the LP and CD say only "trad. adapted Scott/Wickham".

Jack,
Could you post a little more of the song, please? I'm not familiar with the Waterboys output but I know some songs that might fit if it's trad. Although I can't imagine a pop group singing the ones I know.

Anybody know anything about the Waterboys' song "When will we be married, Molly"?

Either the tune or the words? Are both traditional and if so where did they get them?

I believe the Waterboys recorded that song. I'm not sure what album.
If anyone has the music and lyrics I would love to have them too.

Jamie -- A minor and G ought to get you through, pretty much. Up the Waterboys! I heard a local (Calif.) band play "Fisherman's Blues" the other day, and it made me nostalgic for the `Boys. That's still one of my favorite albums.

Cheers,
Michael

Possibly "Nicol o Cod" (also known by many other titles). #313 in Steve Roud's folksong index. The earliest known text is "Nicol o Cod" in the Scarce Songs 1 file at www.erols.com/olsonw

Hello out there,

On the Waterboys' album "Fisherman's Blues," they do a song called "When Will We Be Married." They note that it's a traditional tune, but I've not found it in any collections of folk music or on the internet. Does anyone know if this song has an alternate title by which it's better known? I'm looking for the guitar chords and melody. It's a nice, creepy Irish song. Thanks.

Jamie

(Trad.)

Chorus:
When will we be married, Molly?
When will we be wed?

Trish and Sophie: Most correct..............The Waterboys. I think that is the proper album but will have to look. Another great tune, I believe on the same album is "When ye go away"

Can't help either, but I also know the tune as they play it in a session here in Brighton. Will ask the guy who sings it, but might not run into him for a while. In the mean time, could you please let me know if you find anything out about it, as I really like that song as well. Cheers, Sophie

I don't know much about the song, but I think I know where you might have heard it. The Waterboys recorded it on the album Fisherman's Blues.

I'm not sure who's recorded this song or what it's called. I can only remember the words "when will we be married Molly, when will we be wed, when will we be beded in the same bed" or similiar. Does anyone know it?
