Hello Fellow Mudcateers,

It's the Lonesome Stranger from America's Heartland, back for a brief visit to tell you about a wonderful event our new school, the Americana Music Academy, is hosting this month. The Americana is in Lawrence, Kansas, and is based on the model of the Old Town School in Chicago. We are now in our second year and are growing by bounding leaps. To celebrate and to raise a bit of dough, re, mi in the process, we are hosting a Jammers' Open House at the school. The details are posted below. For information on the school, go to Americana Music Academy

Posting this event on Mudcat represents a full circle for me. I met up with Mudcat five or six years ago when I was living in Wyoming and used it to foster my interest in music that I eventually learned was called "Americana." In 2001 I moved to Kansas and soon got so busy doing music and being involved in this school that I didn't have time to post to the 'Cat anymore. And now, I have the privilege of inviting any of you who can make it to come and celebrate roots music, the Mudcat's legacy, spring in Kansas and any other darned thing you want to celebrate. Who-hooo!

Thanks for being keepers of the flame, as well as occasional flamers ;~} Come set a spell if you can ...

Love and rockets,
WyoWoman

I know where Massachusetts Avenue is, but where's 1419? How far south of I-70 and how far north of 59? Is it downtown? Is there a parking lot?

(If it's downtown, it is no fun driving through an area where there are pedestrians, cars backing out of parking spaces, and traffic lights to observe while also trying to find addresses on buildings.)

rest of the world, NB: the streets of Lawrence, Kansas were named from east to west in the order to which they were admitted to the Union. (The system peters out with Iowa, I believe.) So finding your way around eastern Lawrence is merely a matter of remembering the American history you studied in the eighth and eleventh grades. Simplicity itself!

But if you want a surreal experience, try finding the Lied Center of the University of Kansas, (place where the big concerts are held) using only its official address. Heh heh.

Well, Sorcha, come on down. It's only a 16-hour drive or so, ya big sissy! ;~}

Leeneia, Mass street is several blocks east of 59 highway, which is Iowa when it's in town. If you take the East Lawrence exit off I-70, you'll come to the downtown area. Just keep driving on that road, which I believe is Vermont, until it dead-ends at 11th street. Turn left and go one block east to Massachusetts, then right on Mass for three blocks. The Americana Music Academy is a big old, three-story Victorian house in an attractive renter's-special pink, with blue on the bottom story. There is parking behind the building and also on the street in front of the high school across the street and on the side street. It's just south of the Mass-St. main drag through town, so parking isn't nuts like it is right downtown. We're just a half block south of Mass St. Music, if you know that place (owned by one of our board members).

Hope to see you there. Ask for Kathryn or KC -- I'll be there off and on throughout the weekend.

Anyone else thinking of coming?

Cheers!

--WW

I don't know whether I'll be able to fit it in but it is close enough (4.5 hrs) to make the drive.

Here's a working link to the Americana Music Academy and a
Mappoint Map showing the location.

Thanks for those detailed directions, Guest. It is helpful to know that the building is a house, that it's pink, and that the parking is behind it.

Mark, where do you live? We'd love to see you there. What kind of music do you like to do?

Leeneia, are you in Kansas?

Y'all come, if you can set a spell ...

Cheers,
WyoWoman
aka K.C., aka Kathryn
