JESUS LOVES ME
(lyrics: Anna B. Warner; music: William Bradbury)

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong

CHORUS: Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so

Jesus loves me He who died
Heaven's gates to open wide
He will wash away my sin
Let His little child come in

Jesus loves me He will stay
Close beside me all the way
If I love Him when I die
He will take me home on high

Jesus loves me He will stay
Close beside me all the way
He's prepared a home for me
And someday His face I'll see

Repeat Chorus after each verse....by William Bradbury

Hi- In my distinctly non-Christian childhood, we used to sing: "Jesus hates me, this I know 'Cause my rabbi told me so."

Subject: Lyr Req: JESUS LOVES ME ("Chinese" version)
From: rich r
Date: 15 Feb 97 - 11:31 AM

The Evangelical Church School Hymnal (c 1931) includes this verse credited to Bradbury:

Jesus loves me! Loves me still,
Though' I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throng on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie.

On a separate page it has the following verses with no author credit only the comment "the favorite hymn of China".

Jesus loves me, this I know
For the flowers tell me so;
Tell me by their fragrance sweet,
Lying all around our feet.

Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the birds they tell me so;
Tell me by their merry song,
Singing now the whole day long.

Jesus loves me this I know,
For the sunbeams tell me so;
Tell me by their gladsome light,
Shining clear from morn till night.

Jesus loves me this I know,
For the raindrops tell me so;
Tell me as they gently fall
On the trees, the flow'rs, and all.

I would guess these "nature" verses would be easier to sell in a non-Christian country.

Bradbury wrote the refrain and the tune, but the original verses are by Anna Bartlett Warner. The DT makes the same misattribution found in this thread (which appears to be where most of its material came from). Warner wrote the poem (including the "even though I'm very ill" verse) in 1859 or 1860 and it appeared in a novel by her sister Susan. A couple years later, Bradbury wrote the refrain and tune and put it in one of his Sunday School hymnals. It did become very popular in foreign mission circles, and the tune is sometimes called CHINA in recognition of its reputation as the favorite Christian song of that country.

I'm trying to figure out exactly which verses Warner wrote (apparently two of the more commonly sung ones were subsequently added by one David Rutherford McGuire), but so far I haven't found a searchable online source for the novel.

I'm also trying to determine the year of Anna Warner's birth (1820 - 1824 - 1827?). Anybody have a documented idea?

Anna Bartlett Warner 1820-1915 contributed these 4 stanzas to her sister Susan's best-selling book, Say and Seal published in 1860. The stanzas are spoken by one of the characters in the book, Mr. Linden:

JESUS LOVES ME
(Anna Bartlett Warner)

Jesus loves me, this I know
For the flowers tell me so;
Tell me by their fragrance sweet,
Lying all around our feet.

Jesus loves me! Loves me still,
Though' I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throng on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie.

Jesus loves me He who died
Heaven's gates to open wide
He will wash away my sin
Let His little child come in

Jesus loves me He will stay
Close beside me all the way
He's prepared a home for me
And someday His face I'll see

The book is probably available on-line.

Note from Joe Offer - I question the inclusion of the "flowers" verse and others. See below.

Richie, where did you get the version you posted? It doesn't jive with the version in the link Masato provided, and that's supposed to be the same source. I'd sure like to know the source of the "For the flowers tell me so" line, but I'm not ready to believe you that it came from Warner.

Here's the text from Masato's link:

JESUS LOVES ME
(Anna Bartlett Warner, melody and chorus by William B. Bradbury)

Jesus loves me—this I know,
For the Bible tells me so:
Little ones to him belong,—
They are weak, but he is strong.
    CHORUS:
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me,—he who died
Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let his little child come in.

Jesus loves me—loves me still,
Though I'm very weak and ill;
From his shining throne on high
Comes to watch me where I lie.

Jesus loves me,—he will stay
Close beside me all the way.
Then his little child will take
Up to heaven for his dear sake.

Source: Say and Seal, vol. 2, 1860, pp. 115-16, by Susan Warner.

Note: I did not find anything in Say and Seal that definitely attributes the song to Anna Bartlett Warner. I'm taking that from other sources.
Here's what I found in 101 Hymn Stories, by Kenneth W. Osbeck (Kregel Publications, pp 135-136):
Without doubt the hymn that has influenced children for Christ more than any other is this simply stated one, written in 1860 by Anna Bartlett Warner (1820-1915). Miss Warner wrote this text in collaboration with her sister Susan as part of one of the best-selling novels of that day, a novel written by Susan titled Say and Seal. Today few remember the plot of that novel, which stirred the hearts of many readers. But the simple poem spoken by one of the characters, Mr. Linden, as he comforts Johnny Fax, a dying child, still remains the favorite hymn of children around the world to this day....Dr. William B. Bradbury, the composer of the music for the text, was one of the important contributors to the development of early gospel hymnody in this country.....Bradbury composed the music for "Jesus Loves Me" in 1861 especially for Anna Warner's text and personally added the chorus to the four stanzas. It appeared in its present form in 1862 in his hymnal publication, The Golden Shower.
Other hymns by William B. Bradbury include "He Leadeth Me" and :Just As I Am."
Bradbury's chorus is:
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    The Bible tells me so.

Subject: ADD: Jesus Loves Me More (Buddy Tabor)
From: Ebbie
Date: 13 Apr 10 - 07:36 PM

Here's a different view:

JESUS LOVES ME MORE
            Buddy Tabor, Juneau, Alaska

Oh I know it's cold sleeping in your car
But you really are to blame for where you are
I can see that you're down to skin and bones
But it's not my fault you're starving all alone

You surely cannot punish my success
Just because my way of life has been so blessed
And the reason why you ain't got no food or any shoes
Is because Jesus loves me more than he loves you

While millions starve I'm putting on more weight
That's not my destiny, not my fate
Oh, I'd love to help you out but you have sinned
And I know you'd only go and sin again

But at night when I lie down there's something wrong
When I try to sing your song
There's a little voice that will not go away
Telling me that I've judged and I have strayed

But you surely cannot punish my success
Just because my way of life has been so blessed
And the reason why you ain't got no food or any shoes
Is because Jesus loves me more than he loves you

Yes Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me more than he loves you

Thank you, Lord.

Hi,

Masato did what I should have done but I had to go- so I quickly pasted the four verses that I had from the first line of each verse. I had another source that listed the verses but the flower part shouldn't have been in there.

This seems to be the first appearance of the hymn:

Thanks so much, Masato. We will sing Bradbury's text at the hymn-sing on the 25th.

As an aside, unrelated except through Fanny Crosby, let me mention that last Sunday I sang the first verse of "Kami no megumi wa (itotakasi)" (#492 in the 1954 Sambika), and then an English condensation of the text of my own devising, "Higher is the grace of God". PDF

Florence U. Palmer's One year of Sunday school lessons for young children; a manual for teachers and parents (1900) contains the "flowers" verse (see p. 169).

Haruo, thanks.

Thanks, Masato. That book has the author credit for the flowers version (it's not just a verse, it's four verses capped here with the first verse of Warner's text): it says at the bottom of the page "—Adapted by Frances E. Newton." Although I still think we'll sing Anna, maybe we'll look at Frances, too. All those Franceses to savor: Crosby, Havergal ("the Fanny Crosby of Britain"), now Newton...

He still loves us sonsabitches,
Am I Jesus little lamb?

There is also this one from the irreverent Austin Lounge Lizards:

JESUS LOVES ME
(Austin Lounge Lizards)

I know you smoke, I know you drink that brew
I just can't abide a sinner like you
You know, God can't either, that's why I know it to be true that
Jesus loves me - but he can't stand you

I'm going straight to heaven, boys, when I die
'Cause I've crossed every 't' and I've dotted every 'i'
My preacher tells me that I'm God's kind of guy; that's why
Jesus loves me - but you're gonna fry

God loves all his children, by gum
That don't mean he won't incinerate some
Can't you feel those hot flames licking you
Woo woo woo

I'm raising my kids in a righteous way
So don't you be bringing your kids over to my house to play
Yours'll grow up stoned, left-leaning, and gay - I know
Jesus told me on the phone today

Jesus loves me, this I know
And he told me where you're gonna go
There's lots of room for your kind down below
Whoa whoa whoa

Jesus loves me, he loves me real good, I know he does
He called me up on the phone today and told me how much he loves me
Said, son, I love you
He speaks English pretty well, considering it's a second language for him
You can talk to him too, you know, I got a 900 number in Tulsa
You can call him at - I do it all the time
He'll be glad to hear from you, I talk to him every day
Jesus loves me – but he can't stand you

You can find a live version on Youtube: ALLizards
The final rap in the video differs somewhat from the transcription above that I made from a CD.

Very interesting!

In Haruo's posting - Date: 13 Apr 10 - 03:03 PM - we have:

It did become very popular in foreign mission circles, and the tune is sometimes called CHINA in recognition of its reputation as the favorite Christian song of that country.

I can remember (back ... some mumblety mumble years) ... All right ... about 55 years back ... being taught the chorus in Chinese, probably by a school scripture teacher (ex-missionary) rather than a Sunday School teacher or Youth Fellowship leader.

I can just remember that the "Chinese" (Mandarin / Cantonese / ???) sounded like:

"Zu Yesu niñe - or" (well, very approximately ... and I didn't take notes!)

Regards,

Bob

You're right, MT. It is a song of his own devising. There are a couple of his songs on YouTube but not that one.
