Having a phobia to anything to do with the eyes (I have even crossed of eyes on my doner card) I find this most distressing, but would not stop anyone wanting the prosedure, having it done, as long as its not MY son or daughter!!! having said that, I have no idea how I would stop them if they wanted it done.

I'm looking forward to the day when middle-aged men not only get their vitals pierced or painted or chocolate dipped, but wear them on the outside so that others can see that they're not old fogies. Ah, to be middle aged again...

Seriously though, I'm FROM the Younger Generation, and I would never have it done in a billion years!!!!!

"Casting dispersions" would be some kind of spell for getting rid of people. Could be quite handy. " 'Aroint thee, witch', the rump-fed runyon cries...", from the Scottish play, is an example, perhaps.

To me this eye thing sounds much more like the kind of thing rich bored 30 somethings, scared of aging (becoming boring old farts) might do, rather than rebellious teenagers. Sticking a safety pin through your ear had a bit of style as a gesture, but going to some high-priced whore of a pseudo-surgeon and getting this stuff done is a bit different.

I'd think Dick Greenhaus's notion of getting the same effect with a contact lense sounds much more likely to catch on. Rather the same way a lot of the pierced belly buttons going around aren't in fact pierced at all, I understand.

Yes, but now I do it with the knowledge that I don't have to impress anyone else. How ever ridiculous I look doing anything, I'm doing it to be true to myself. You, know, dance as if no one's watching, that kind of thing.

Getting one of these things implanted in my eye isn't who I am or have ever been. I can think of better uses of my time, my money and my pain.

" realize how ridiculous you used to look when you wore or did x"

What you need to realize is how ridiculous you look NOW, wearing or doing y....

Exactly the same as then, only different...

Who cast "dispersions"? All that was necessary to assess this issue maturely was to be old enough to have one of those defining moments where you look at an old picture of yourself and realize how ridiculous you used to look when you wore or did x. Sort of a been there, done that, threw away the tee shirt when it got too small sort of thing.

I'm not into body piercing myself...

But I sure as hell don't cast dispersions on those who are... I'm not that arrogant, close-minded or self-centred....

Clinton Hammond - Why don't you try this - pierce the penis, insert a little ring and chain it to a wall. To complete the effect, you also wear a dog collar. Don't forget the latex!

Ah c'mon, don't be such an old fogie. Show us how young and hip you really are.

Oddly enough, I know several people who've not only not had their vision corrected from lasik surgery, they've lost their night vision and see halos during the day. No correction to their side effects possible. No one knows the long term impact of the surgery, either. But that's neither here nor there, we each assess the risks of life for ourselves.

AH Clint! You just like to stir up us old fogies don't you?

From the safety stand point I'd agree that it would be better to have a decorated 0 correction contact lense. I've seen ones that make you look like you have cat's eyes and I thought the ones with the radiation symbol were pretty cool!

The jewelry option is more invasive and harder to reverse without leaving scar tissue on the eye. With all of the other options with decorating the face this one seems too small and expensive to bother with. I still like the idea of having eyes that glow in the dark. Maybe I can get a contact lense for that!

"Actually the ancient and honorable practice (Polynesian? African? I forget) of stretching your earlobes by making a cut in them and inserting increasingly larger coins is now coming back in the teen set, I am informed by our family spy in the Younger Generation."

Oddly enough it was also a European practice. Saw examples of ear spools in the Irish National Museum they'd uncovered across Ireland. Gold, of course, like good pierced ear rings.

gotta differentiate, Clinton, between 'normal' and 'standard'...sometimes 'non-standard' is normal.

I love how you people talk about old trends like they're recent... It shows me just how out of touch folks (and folkies) can be...

" You mean the fear of being normal?"

Who wants to be 'normal'?

"trying to being unique by following the crowd"

Sounds like Mudcat in a nutshell...

She says it looks really gross when the disk is taken out, though. They use sterilized disks instead of coins since they aren't perosnally accountable for their bride-prices, I suppose.

My problem, esthetics aside, is that it's a dumb way to accomplish the effect. Much easier (and I daresay cheaper) to decorate a zero-correction contact lens.

It's all part of the human race's desire to alter and decorate itself...I have a book called "The Unfashionable Human Body", which traces the history of body altering.
   Just think, it COULD be

Ubangi lips stretching
or
Chinese footbinding
or

Hmong neck-stretching

I needent mention the various forms of tattoos and piercings prevalent today.

me? I'm SO handsome that I need no enhancement... ;>)

I just think this is the kind of self-improvement that is better left to oldies. I mean, when your eyes are all bloodshot and that, it might even be an improvement.

And it'd be a great way of showing how we aren't boring old farts and afraid of the whole world and all that.

After you, though, Clinton.

(But I have a nasty feeling it'd be seen as definite proof of boring old fartism by some unkind yoofs...)

Despite Clinton being so inflammatory, he's on the right side in this one. This is a cultural experiment. You may recal when men started wearing long hair at the late sid eof the 50's, how shocking it seemed? DA's? Beatle cuts?? and even (shudder and pray) PONYTAILS??? on MEN????

Fuckin' faggot commie pinko bastids!!

So this is, what, "different" somehow? Sure it less easily reversible, like a vasectomy. So?

Ah, youthful rebellion. That time when so many would do anything to prove their not really like their parents. Thankfully most folks grow out of the need to prove things. OK, we back slide from time to time but at least we realize we don't necessarily have to do foolish things to prove we are who we are. It's not fear, it's being bored by immaturity. It gets old after a while, that's all.

For instance, I understand people are already noticing a rise in the revenue of companies that surgically remove tattos...

Ah, CH is in his usual fine form today... IMNVHO, I'd put this in the same category as piercings and body art...not my personal thing. If I thought I had a right to approve or disapprove, I'd say that a woman's beautiful blue/brown/green/hazel eyes look just fine to me without the addition of a cheap-looking silver heart.

I think I'm just getting too old try new things or too quick to see what could and will go wrong. Just what my kids say about me.

What worries me is that my one rebellious child will be old enough to try this (or harrass me endless about it) by the time this makes it to the US.

Euwwwww! I can't stand an eyelash in my eye. I won't consider lasik because it involves current and possible future damage to the eyeball. And this jewel decision is made on a casual basis? These twits trust that these foreign objects won't lead to disease or blindness? Don't let anyone who has one of these implants into a position where they're making any critical decisions regarding your health or life. This adornment shows a lack of good sense on an important and deep level.
