Subject: Lyr Req: Old Songs
From: GUEST,catfishlee@hotmail.com
Date: 11 Apr 04 - 10:56 AM

My dad use to sing a song, all I can remember of it was :
"Did you ever hear Pete go tweet tweet tweet on his piccolo?"

Could you point me to a place I might be able to download a copy, find more information about it etc?

Also, a song that came out in approx. 1932 called:
"Lef mah gal in the mountains"
that my 93 year old Uncle use to sing but these days can't remember the author.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you,

Info from the web

Phil Baxter
b. 1896, Navarro County, Texas, d. 1972, Dallas, Texas
Overview
Phil Baxter is recalled today primarily as an orchestra leader, whose bands were regionally, rather than nationally, known. He was not very active after the 1930's.
His best known compositions have a novelty character, as such songs:
       1929 "Piccolo Pete"
1930 "I'm a Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas (You ought to see me Strut My Stuff")
1934 "Have A Little Dream On Me", lyrics by Billy Rose and John Murray

Catalog data from the Atlantic County (NJ) Library:
    Song title: Piccolo Pete
    Notes: C. 1929
    Author: Baxter, Phil
First Line: Come on you people gather 'round and listen to the story of Piccolo Pete.
First Chorus Line: Did you ever hear Pete go "Tweet, tweet, tweet," on his piccolo?
An early recording was by Ted Weems & His Orchestra, with Parker Gibbs, vocalist.

I assembled this much from a couple of sound samples found at Barnes & Noble:
Come on you people gather round and listen to the story of Piccolo Pete.
He plays a piccolo so pretty that the people follow him out in the street.
He learned his music from the birds and bees 'mid the flowers and trees.
That's why he knows so many melodies, melodies that will please.
    ...
    Now I'll put you wise:
    That's a bird in disguise,
    A bird called Piccolo Pete.

Did you ever hear Pete go "Tweet, tweet, tweet," on his piccolo? Huh? No?
    Well you've missed a lot
    'Cause he surely has got
    Style that's hotter than hot.
Did you ever hear Pete go "Tweet, tweet, tweet," on his piccolo? No?
    Well you've missed a treat
    'Cause his melodies sweet
Are the kind that couldn't be beat.

Transcribed from The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites, on Requests Page 8.

LEFT MY GAL IN THE MOUNTAINS
(Carson Robison)
(As sung by Hank Thompson)

Left my gal in the mountains. I left her standing in the rain.
I went down to the depot, caught myself a midnight train,
Greased my way down to Georgia, landed in a gambling town,
Got myself in trouble 'cause I shot a county sheriff down.

The jury read the verdict: murder in the first degree.
The judge says, "Take that pris'ner to the penitentiary."
They put the handcuffs on me, put me on a Pullman train,
Took me to Atlanta, tied me with a ball and chain.

Left my gal in the mountains. I left her standing all alone.
Last night I dreamed I got a letter saying, "Baby, won't you please come home?"
She told me that she loved me, said that she loved me true.
Then I dreamed I wrote a letter saying, "I'm a-coming home to you."

Then I woke up this morning laying in Atlanta jail,
No one here to love me, no one to go my bail,
Prison bars all around me, guards a-walking by my door.
I'm so sad and lonely 'cause I'll never see my gal no more,
I'll never see my gal no more.

[Recorded by Gene Autry, Hoyt Axton, Carson Robison, The Sons of the Pioneers, and Hank Thompson.]

PICCOLO PETE
Words and music by Phil Baxter
As sung by Ted Weems and His Orchestra on "The Essential Ted Weems: 1923-1930" (2007)

[Recording starts with bird sounds, followed by a few notes on a piccolo.]

Now I'll put you wise:
That's a bird in disguise,
A bird called Piccolo Pete.

Did you ever hear Pete
Go "tweet, tweet, tweet," on his piccolo? Huh? No?
Well you've missed a lot,
'Cause he surely has got
Style that's hotter than hot.
Did you ever hear Pete
Go "tweet, tweet, tweet," on his piccolo? No?
Well, you've missed a treat,
'Cause his melodies sweet
Are the kind that couldn't be beat.
He can pick a high note.
He can pick a low note.
He can pick a blue note.
He can pick a note that's a brand-new note.
Did you ever hear Pete
Go "tweet, tweet, tweet," on his piccolo? No?
Well, I'll put you wise:
He's a bird in disguise,
A bird called Piccolo Pete.

Did you ever hear Pete
Go [piccolo notes] on his piccolo? No!
Did you ever hear Pete
Go [piccolo notes] on his piccolo? Uh-uh!
He can pick a high note.
He can pick a low note.
He can pick a blue note.
He can pick a note that's a brand-new note.
Did you ever hear Pete
Go [piccolo notes] on his piccolo? No!

Did you ever hear Joe
Go "ope, ope, ope" on his old bass horn?

Did you ever hear Dick
Do some of his tricks on his little peck horn? Well—

Did you ever hear Watt
Gettin' hot, hot, hot on his clarinet? There!

But they can't beat Piccolo Pete.

I was born in Dallas in 1952 and my Mom used a dry cleaner service in Snider Plaza where Phil Baxter was the owner I believe. My mom and Phil would talk about Piccolo Pete and They would have a good laugh together. I am a songwriter also, and just today decided to look for Piccolo Pete and it's writer,Phil Baxter. I am also pleased to see he wrote I'm a Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas because that's another familiar title I've heard of from my Mom. Phil was a very pleasant and upbeat guy,at least from my 8-10 year old perspective then. Thanks to all the music lovers who help keep the old memories going!
