Can anyone help with the chords and lyrics for Black Dog Blues. I am familiar with the Koerner, Ray, and Glover version; but was wondering if there were other versions floating around. Thanks. TequilaRon

Is this the song you're after? I think I posted a different version (by Dick Justice) quite recently.

BLACK DOG BLUES - Blind Blake c. March 1927

Let me tell you mama, what my black dog done done to me.
Let me tell you mama, what my black dog done done to me.
He chased me from my regular, now he's after my used to be.

Black dog, black dog, you caused me to weep and moan.
Black dog, black dog, you caused me to weep and moan.
You caused me to leave my sweet old happy home.

Black dog, black dog, you're forever on my mind.
Black dog, black dog, you're forever on my mind.
If you'll only let me see my baby one more time.

So long, black dog, I'm quittin' your hard luck town.
So long, black dog, I'm quittin' your hard luck town.
`Cause you've got the best dog, leavin' papa poodle to frown.

I heard Roy Book Binder do a song called Black Dog Blues, but I am not sure who he attributed it to. I'll check it out. Two of the verses were:

You called me a dog, when I went away
You called me your big black dog
When I cam home with a ten dollar bill
You said, "Daddy, where you been so long?"

I've been all around Kentucky
I've been all around Tennessee
Every where I lay my head down
That was home to me

This song is a rag with the same chord structure as Rag Mama - A D7 G C -

Stefan Grossman has a guitar tablature transcription of Blind Blake's Black Dog Blues in his "Ragtime Blues Guitar" book. I tried to learn it once, it's not easy. Blake was a great musician.

Thanks everyone for the response. The version I am after is the Book Binder arrangement. Since I posted to this thread I have learned that Roy teaches Black Dog Blues on one of his Homespun Tapes. I have seen Roy do the song probably five or six times, but I guess I had a momentary brain cramp when I posted because I just didn't remember Roy doing the song. By the way, for anyone in the Tampa Bay area Roy BookBinder and Spider John Koerner will be at Skipper's Smokehouse the first Thursday in November. Thanks again for the help. TequilaRon

Correction regarding the appearance of Roy BookBinder and Spider John Koerner. The show has been moved to Trader's Pub in Downtown Lakeland and will be on the first Thurs. in November. This is a precursor to their appearance at the Wings & Strings Festival which begins the next day. TequilaRon

Tequila Ron

It's good to hear that Spider John is up and around again. My memory says he had major surgery this year.

You are correct Roger. Multiple by-pass surgery I believe. This performance in Lakeland is sort of a benefit for Spider John I believe. Ron
