Subject: Lyr Req: Childhood song for Sister
From: GUEST,Poohdreams
Date: 15 Apr 04 - 03:37 PM

I'm looking for the title and artist (or a place to search) for a song from the late 1970's for a gift for my sister.

All I have is one paragraph:
My name is Michael
I've got a nickel
I've got a nickel, shiny and new
I'm going to buy me all kinds of candy
That's what I'm gonna do.

If anyone can help, I would be most appreciative.

Thank you.

That's one that might come up again, so I'm going to post the lyrics so they'll turn up in our search engine. Not folk, but close enough. From this link posted above. I guess I remember this recording, but I wonder if the "my name is Michael" might come from something earlier.

Playground In My Mind
Clint Holmes

When this old world gets me down
And there's no love to be found
I close my eyes and soon I find
I'm in a playground in my mind
Where the children laugh and the children play
And we sing a song all day

"My name is Michael, I got a nickel
I got a nickel, shiny and new
I'm gonna buy me all kinds of candy
That's what I'm gonna do"

See the little children
Living in a world that I left behind
Happy little children
In the playround in my mind

Oh the wonders that I find
In the playground in my mind
In a world that used to be
Close your eyes and follow me
Where the children laugh and the children play
And we sing a song all day

"My girl is Cindy
When we get married, we're gonna have a baby or two
We're gonna let them visit their grandma
That's what we're gonna do"

"My name is Cindy
When we get married, were gonna have a baby or two
We're gonna let them vist their grandma
That's what we're gonna do"

See the little children
See how they're playing so happy
In the playround in my mind

Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
La la la la la la la

I don't think many people really know the real song. It's not how anyone has said it was, but I like reading the funny guesses that people come up with. Where's the person that used to sing it to me? They must know how this song goes. Where could they be?

The song doesn't start with a nickel I don't think. From what I recall, the penny came first and how much candy can you buy with a nickel really so if Michael is trying to buy a lot of candy he will need more than a penny or a nickel. The diamond ring is worth about a quarter I think but can't tell you who is singing it or who the diamond ring is being given to. Maybe I will be able to pull up the rest from memory but this song was sung to me as a baby. Too young to even remember who was singing it but I remember the tune and some things about it.

It was one of my songs assigned to me as a very small girl. The other has to do with Oak trees and someone asking if I still wanted them around after a long period of not being around. Hmmmm, guess it would depend on the person...

Happy Gobble Gobble Bawk Bawk Day!!! Hope everyone that needs something to laugh about today can get a good giggle from the memories of yesteryear!!!

C
