Subject: Tech: great young musicians From: v Date: 19 Apr 04 - 01:17 AM My daughter is 12 and playing guitar and piano, and has a great singing voice. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any very young (16-25) musicians who were folk, folk-rock, alternative but tasteful? she learned an avril lavigne song, and surprisingly, avril lavigne, who is all of a teen-ager, is quite creative and pleasant to listen to! much nicer than 'eminem' who is the next choice in daughter's limited musical exposure... best, v |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 19 Apr 04 - 07:30 AM But Eminem's lyrics are infinitely more intelligent than Avril's. Compare 'Cleaning Out My Closet' with 'Sk8er Boi' and see what I mean (he can spell properly too, which Avril clearly can't!). Johnny (a.k.a. Deputy-Marshall Mathers, a.k.a. Fat Bald Shady) :0) |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: GUEST,foot Date: 19 Apr 04 - 08:15 AM Hi V The answer is to broaden your daughter's exposure to all manner of songs & music - does she go to any folk clubs, sessions or festivals? She is bound to find things she likes, and they needn't necessarily be sung by teenagers. |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: black walnut Date: 19 Apr 04 - 11:03 AM Jim Moray. My 19 year old son came back to folk via Jim Moray, and now listens to Alison Krauss CDs, and plays blues on the piano in his 'rock' band. ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: ranger1 Date: 19 Apr 04 - 11:18 AM Try Nickel Creek's first CD. It's a mix of vocal and intrumentals. Look for it in the country section, even though it's really more folk. |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 Apr 04 - 09:18 AM Wow, v, that's a bit off the beaten track. Jim Moray is a good start. Expose her also to slightly older songwriters - from Paul Simon through Tanita Tikaram, Sheryl Crow to Harvey Andrews (Mudcatter), Steve Tilston etc. For trad context, you could put her in touch with young Sam Pirt (Mudcatter) - he may have other contacts nearer you also. |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: s6k Date: 20 Apr 04 - 09:24 AM eminem is definately overlooked because he is a rapper. His lyrics are often very intelligent. even when full of swearing, etc, it is still very cleverly put together, and it takes a lot of effort to remember all the lyrics to perform it on stage. If you forget the music, it is indeed clever stuff. Like Foot said, broaden her musical knowledge. Play stuff by the experts. Play stuff from Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, to Christy Moore and Emmylou Harris, up to modern day with Thea Gilmore etc. |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 20 Apr 04 - 11:18 AM Difficult to recommend UK folk artists to someone in Alaska, don't imagine many will be available there. You could try websites for Cara Dillon, Kate Rusby, Eliza Carthy, Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman, Kerfuffle, all young and excellent. Hope you have success. Johnny :0) |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: GUEST,CC Date: 20 Apr 04 - 01:17 PM I always recommend the Beatles & Dylan as a standard disclaimer. But for a young performer, check out Nellie McKay. She's like 19, and hip. She sings, writes and performes on multiple instruments on hr debut double CD. Lots of styles & influences rolled into her own thing. Reasonably mature, very listenable. I recommend her with confidence for any aspiring young female artist looking to hear something newly released. Best of Luck, CC |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 20 Apr 04 - 04:26 PM For just good solid songs there are the works of Kate Wolf and Stan Rogers and folk like James Keelaghan. For a young group that is getting some airplay on Americana stations there is the Old Crow Medicine Show. They are an old time string band but write some of their music. They have also opened some shows for Gillian Welch. She is another good person for an influence on young singers. |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: YorkshireYankee Date: 20 Apr 04 - 11:07 PM How 'bout Alison Krauss... she may not be *young* young now, but IIRC, she was still in her teens when she began recording. Her stuff might not be that diffucult to find (don't know about her early stuff, though) -- particularly after the success of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Cheers, YY |

Subject: RE: great young musicians From: Firecat Date: 21 Apr 04 - 04:50 PM Erm, I don't really know if she counts as folk, but what about Katie Melua? She's really good. So's Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum, but they're more jazz than folk. Not sure how old The Corrs are, but they're great too. |
