Subject: Need an Accordion for Kenya
From: GUEST,Sam Pirt

Hi All Catters

This an important appeal for an accordion for me to take over to Kenya in Africa. I took and accordion over in December last year where I taught it to locals and left it there. I am going again this September and I need another to take over an leave. The accordion does not need to be new it can be an oldish one as long as it play a tune or two!!

Music is such a good tool over there to lift spirts and give people pride in their culture. When I visit as well as teaching the accordion I am going to be learning the tribes traditional music, song, dance and customs.

I am going over with the charity SENGWER AID

SENGWER AID is a Registered Charity which aims to help the Sengwer Tribe of Kenya to help themselves.

SENGWER AID was formed after my mum's chance meeting with the tribe in August 2002. She was impressed with their efforts to make the most of the very little that they had; every day they battle with great hardships. The Sengwer are bright and hardworking people but they were turned out of their lands by White Settlers in the 1930's. Since then they have suffered much oppression and have struggled to survive. No-one has every helped them before. Because my mum made such good friends with them she has continued to help them; in January 2004 she set up Sengwer Aid to make sure that every single penny that she raises goes direct to help families who are living in real poverty. The Sengwer are now becoming stronger and fighting to retain their precious culture and way of life.

I visited the tribe in December 2002 / January 2003 and was given such a warm welcome. Please help us to help them!

The accordion does not need to be new as long as I can get a tune out of it!!!

Thakyou for your help and support, Sam

Hi Sam

1) Could you give us some more info on the charity please? If you don't currently have a web page, I'd be happy to assist you in setting up one.

2) I had received some information about accordions in Africa, but it seems that you are nearer to the action. I would appreciate you telling us more about what music is played on them, what tunes, keys chords, etc, etc.

As a matter of presonal interest, while we can still find out the information :-) I'd like to know the model etc of the first and any successive instruments you provide them.

Robin

Yes, the destruction of the native modal tuning method and relacement by the modern fixed pitch, Equally Tempered tuning method.

Howard Goodall, in his TV series on Music pointed out that it was the popular wide spreading of the Piano Accordion that was responsible to this tragedy.

Sam, I'll dig one out of my menagerie for you, either a 48 bass Pietro or a 120 bass Hohner (the latter would be better, but I have to ask the person who gave it to me if they'd like to see it go to far better use than me annoying people with it). Paul Flannery gave it the works, so it's in A1 condition for an old lady of sixty plus.

Msg For Sam Pirt

Get in touch with Rob Beecroft at Birmingham Accordion Centre (phone 0121 753 3709) he has accordions for sale there for as little as £25.

Don't listen to those who would pour scorn on the accordion. It's a super instrument....and you're so right, a few jolly tunes can do wonders for low spirits!!! Good Luck

"How does an accordion get on with the heat?"

General Amin up the road in Uganda used to play the accordion, which he learnt while in the British army. This suggests it works all right in the climate. (I don't think Amin was a very good player, but people tended to avoid saying that.)

The main problem with the heat would be storage. The wax holding the reed blocks would probably survive temps of 30-35 deg C without too much problem. The problem about leaving the accordion in the car in the heat is that temps can quickly rise inside the car to well over 60 Deg C, which may be approaching the damage point.

The other problem about leaving an accordion on the back seat of a car happened to me. I left the car for only a few minutes, and when I rushed back, someone had broken the rear window and thrown two more accordions on the back seat...

I think push-pull instruments(Anglo concertinas and melodeon/button accordions ) have a better track record in adapting to fit in wonderfully to African music, rather than piano-accordions. What do you think?

Here is a bit more information about "Sengwer Aid" and the people Sam and his mum have come to know:

From Inform - the monthly magazine of the Methodist churches in Royston, Foxton & Papworth

Thursday at Eight

"Don't worry about me," said our speaker, "I can talk for Africa."

And so she could – and so she did – she spoke straight from the heart. For the next hour and a half, Gill Pirt told us of her love for the Sengwer tribe of Kenya and how it came about.

As Home Start organiser in Goole, Yorkshire, in April 2001 she was offered the opportunity to go to Kenya by Home Start International to set up a Home Start group in the township of Kitale, a place not normally on the tourist route. She stayed with a minister, with a family of five children, for 12 months during which time she opened up 13 Home Start groups. During her time there she met only two other white men. These turned out to be American missionaries who were helping with the considerable street people problem.

One day there was a celebration of a group of people officially being recognised as the 43rd tribe of Kenya and Gill was invited to attend. She was introduced to the leaders and she was affected by the friendship shown to her and the natural lifestyle of the people and subsequently she came to love them.

She now considers herself a privileged friend and she is an honourable member of their dancing team.

They are not warlike or aggressive like the neighbouring tribes e.g. the Masari, who have overwhelmed them over the years but they are a gentle, simple people and great bee-keepers. They are very self-supporting with a strong sense of community, looking after the more vulnerable members of their society. As with the rest of Kenya, they are appreciating the importance of education and all the children go to school. They live in mud huts and have no formal medical facilities relying on the local medicine man. Dentistry is carried out with aid of a Stanley knife. Everything is recycled and nothing is wasted. Gill showed us a very efficient cooking pot made from an old paint tin.

Gill told us how she has set up a registered charity 'Sengwer Aid' and this is the first time that the Sengwer have ever been offered financial assistance. There are no overheads and there are special routing orders to avoid any of the money going astray as corruption is rife. Every penny raised is guaranteed to get to the people.

We were shown many artefacts including skirts of goatskin, arrows, jewellery, and musical instruments and she had many items for sale made by the people themselves. The labour is organised and they get paid for their work and the people show considerable nous and this was illustrated by the story of a woman who was given a sum of 2,800 shillings (about £28) for her produce. This is quite a sum and she wanted to use it the best way possible. Her first thought (as it would be for many mothers) was to her children to whom she gave 800s. With the remaining 2,000s she hired a cow. This would provide her with milk and she would not have to return the cow until, and if, it produced a calf at which time she would keep the calf and return the cow.

Gill claims that she has faith but is not religious – she doesn't plan things but as doors open she takes one step at a time. The audience was totally captivated and I am sure we have not heard the last of her or the Sengwer. A collection raised £95 on the evening.

Hi there to all my old friends and new. I'm sitting here smiling, forgotten how appealing this Mudcat thing is! Sam told me there has been stuff going on about Africa so thought I would say Hello to you all. It is great that you are getting Sam fixed up with an accordion to take over with us when we go in September. The last one was really well-received and played to many people - both in schools and in the church every Sunday! They love to sing and dance and the accordion certainly gets things moving!!

It is interesting to see how Allan C has somehow found a write-up of a talk I gave to a church group in Royston. It still amazes me, the power of these machines! That write-up sort of sumarises what this Africa thing is about. None of it was planned, as each door opened I sort of stepped through - so many people around me have wanted to help I've simply channelled it across to Kenya to the people who so much need a bit of help. Every single penny goes direct to the Sengwer tribe members - anyone who know Africa will know how amazing that is, money just kind of disappears out there.

So - my good wishes to you all. It is good to see that Mudcat is still thriving, a wonderful forum! When Sam toured USA - I think about 4 years ago - that was the first time I had ever been on line - I have very fond memories of many encouraging messages and lots of news about how he was getting on with each group of Mudcatters he was staying with. A global family eh? Good wishes to all - keep Catting!
