Having an argument with a flat mate at the moment!

I think that at least 1 of the songs in this film (score by Franz Waxman) had lyrics. She disagrees. We can't find the film to hire so it's hanging at the moment.

Are there any songs in this - and if so - does anyone have the lyrics??

This is one of my all time favourite movies and if you e-mail me I could send you a video. There is at least one drinking song it goeth thus:

"If we drink we will die, If we don't drink we will die. So we might as well say what the hell, and let our glasses clink."

There is another song that goes something like this

"We are the cosacks! We are the cosacks! Souls no man on earth can tame..."

This is actually quite a long song, I'll have a squint at the video tonight and post the lyrics tomorrow.

This may not help at all, but the original story was by a Russian novelist, perhaps Gogol. A Czech composer (Janacek, I believe) wrote a symphonic work based on the story, but I don't think it had any words. If it did, they would be in Czech.

Here's the movie synopsis from the All Movie Guide:

Taras (Yul Brynner) is the powerful Cossack tribesman who is betrayed by the Poles and is forced to flee his country. His son Andrei (Tony Curtis) labors under his father's famous shadow, never quite measuring up to the expectations of the tribal leader. The tribe engages in bloody and violent conflict to regain their territory. The trouble between father and son continues as Andrei falls for the beautiful Polish princess Natalia (Christine Kaufmann). Spectacular battle scene of cavalry clashes highlight this colorful, historical action saga. -- Dan Pavlides

Always like that flick, till I found that they were the one & the same who raped & plundered my grandfather's people & drove them from their land. Regained? Then I still liked the flick. Barry who didn't want to grow up USSR.

I have been collecting somg lyrics since 1961. I know I have the lyriccs to a song called Taras Bulba in an Australian produced songster. Never heard of the movie prior to this post. Will try to find - this part of my very disorganised collection is in baddish shape.

Susan, are you familiar with this one? I'm sure it has the same tune. Rise Up Singing describes it as a traditional spinning song. I learned it from my little sister, who was very obnoxious about singing Girl Scout songs.

Wow! thanks for all the responses! Now I can be really childish and go back home and go "ner ner ner ner nah!" etc!

Anyway, "Celtic-End Singer" - my e-mail is [e-mail] If you're having another look at the video (or if anyone is) i would REALLY (REALLY!) appreciate any more lyrics. rather than cluttering up the forum - could you post them direct (or to both?) PARTICULARLY the drinking song - which is what started the argument in the first place! - the one which goes
