Subject: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: Elaine Date: 08 Oct 98 - 01:01 PM Hi! On Chris Norman's 'Man with the Wooden Flute' CD, the 17th cut is 'Fairy Queen' by Carolan. I am trying to find this tune, but apparently there is more than one. It is not the one in Bunting's collection, nor that on the Tuneweb page. Does anyone else know where I can find it? Thanks, Elaine |
Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: Bruce O. Date: 08 Oct 98 - 01:25 PM Donal O'Sullivan. 'Carolan: The Life Times and Music of an Irish Harper', #195. O'Sullivan notes considerable differences among copies, but Bunting's tune is a version. The one O'Sullivan says is best is the earliest, cataloged as that in NIT, in the Irish Tune Index on my website. (Fairy Queen) www.erols.com/olsonw |

Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: GUEST,Helen, cookieless Date: 11 Jul 09 - 05:15 PM Carolan's Fairy Queen - info & midi on pyberta website This is the info they give for the tune: "Bean riogh na síbhruíne. According to Bunting, Carolan has only adapted and expanded an original and ancient air named "My love and Treasure" or Ciste sa stór." Lovely arrangement of a lovely tune on the midi file, too. Now I'm going to listen to their other midis. A healthy dose of Carolan on an early Sunday morning (in Oz). What a way to start the day! Helen |
Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: GUEST,priestess Date: 11 Jul 09 - 05:29 PM helen... i went to the link and the lyrics are not in english! tried to google it for translation but nothing came up. do you know the translation? to everyone: when you hear someone play Fairy Queen is it usually just instrumental? i love Chris Norman's version. will try to find the others. |
Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: GUEST,Helen, cookieless Date: 12 Jul 09 - 07:11 AM And the moral of the story is, don't hit enter when you are in the "From" field because it posts the message. Hi again, I forgot to say that my copy of Bunting is well & truly buried under a houseful of boxes, books, kitchenware, furniture, etc etc in our garage. We have temporarily moved out of home, so I can't check the veracity of the Pyberta website's claim that Bunting actually wrote that. Priestess, it's a little unclear on tat site about whether the lyrics belong to the original tune, or to Carolan's version of it, and sadly, no, I couldn't translate the lyrics to save my life. Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: GUEST,Helen, cookieless Date: 12 Jul 09 - 07:22 AM Well, it looks like my blunder wasn't posted as a message, like I thought it was. A bit more googling shows that the title Ciste sa stór has been translated as "Coffers nor stores" and there is some information here: two-thirds down the page - more info As I recall, Bunting's writing style is disjointed like the above info so it could be a direct copy from his book. I don't know whether the information will help much, though. Helen |
Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: Rasener Date: 12 Jul 09 - 07:43 AM I like Cara's version of it. Even better when you see them doing it live. |
Subject: RE: Carolan's Fairy Queen From: GUEST,Priestess Date: 21 Jul 09 - 09:39 PM I downloaded Cara's version of Fairy Queen and LOVE IT! Thanks to you all for helping me find another version. It's very enchanting to say the least ! Got to meet Chris Norman at the Indianapolis Early Music Festival this month. He is an amazing artist. Will have to check out Cara's tour schedule. Unlikely they will come to midwest USA though, right? Thanks again for the Fairy Queen discussion. Its now on my top 10 list! |
