Subject: Origins: Your favourite Folk Song? From: Georgiansilver Date: 26 Apr 04 - 12:48 PM My favourite Folk Song was performed by Steeleye Span and called the Rosebud in June....which I believe was taken from a traditional source. Anyone know its origin and...... what is your favourite please? |
Subject: RE: Origins: Your favourite Folk Song? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 26 Apr 04 - 12:56 PM 'The Sprig of Thyme' - a good North Lincolnshire song from Saxby-All-Saints, near Winterton. And if me brain-cells weren't dying at such a rapid rate I'd even tell you who collected it, and from the singing of whom. Might do that tomorrow. And 'The Week Before Easter' (esp. Barry Dransfields rendition on his CD 'Wings Of The Sphinx). One version of a song with many versions. Johnny :0) |
Subject: RE: Origins: Your favourite Folk Song? From: Sooz Date: 26 Apr 04 - 02:16 PM From the singing of Joseph Taylor of Saxby-All-Saints, phonographed by Percy Grainger in Brigg on 4th August 1906. Now that brings us to Brigg Fair (Which was the day after according to the song!) |

Subject: RE: Origins: Your favourite Folk Song? From: Ed. Date: 26 Apr 04 - 03:33 PM Back to Georgiansilver's original question: The version of 'Rosebud in June' sung by Steeleye Span, was collected by by Cecil Sharp from a farmer, William King, of West Hastree, Somerset in 1904. Bert Lloyd, commenting on the Waterson's version, says: "Eighteenth century print may have helped to keep in alive, both words and music. It was sung on the stage in a play called The Custom of the Manor in 1715, but it's doubtful whether a town composer made it, even though it's an unusual shape for a traditional tune. Most probably he lifted it from tradition." From this page and the related link. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Your favourite Folk Song? From: paddymac Date: 26 Apr 04 - 11:37 PM I aint got it writ right yet. :-) Slightly more seriously, I suspect all of us have favorites among the ones we know, or know of, but as a place like the mudcat promptly shows, there are very many more that I have not yet,and perhaps never will, had/have a chance to hear or play or sing. Thus, my personal philosophy is to just keep lookoing and listening, and maybe someday I'll find it. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Your favourite Folk Song? From: GUEST,Woodchip Date: 27 Apr 04 - 08:13 AM The thread starts with G-silver citing a Steeleye song as fave. Made me remember that twas their 'Please to See the King' album that got me into folk in the first place! Fave song? That's too tough a call! But that riff on 'Female Drummer' that Steeleye did - that's a real hook! And that version of 'Blacksmith' Then I trawl their albums and think - yeah! 'Parcel of Rogues' That's it! Then there's yet another I think of - like their 'When I was on Horseback' . So it goes on - and that's just in their catalogue! Then there's Nic Jones! 'Canadee-I-O' - and others - arrrrgh! SO MANY! Brain overload! Help!!!!!!!!!! |
