there was a great e-mail going around a while back about a special
olympics race where a running child fell, and all the participants
went back to help the fallen one and they all finished together..
very heart warming story.

Helped out with them a few times, try to get my "special" kids (the young'uns at work)to either judge, assist in some other way or at least participate in an event to the best of their ability *BG*!

Can't describe the feeling it gives you. You just gotta do it!

There's a song by Bruce Hornsby and the Range by the title of "Long Race" which I have always felt would make a great theme song for the Special Olympics.

How could anything be more wonderful. I have volunteered for many things in my life. None, I repeat, none, has ever come close to the satisfaction and good times that I experienced in Special Olympics. It is one of those events where you set out to help, and at the end you realize the young people helped you far more than you helped them.

All the best,

Mick

Special Olympics are truly grand, and "wonderful" doesn't begin to describe them. Go and experience.

As the Dad of a S-O participant, and a very happy one, and also as a volunteer, there is nothing quite like them. Every one of them results in little moments that are great stories. For all of you who have never been.....Go. I bet if you attend one, you'll be involved in the next!

Yes, often held outside of the USA. Google and look at the first 20 pages to find at least five countries mentioned.

I had the opportunity to volunteer this year with the Special Olympics. The amount of people who participated was most impressive! We had children as young as 5 and also those who are 50+ competing in various events. There were at least 15 organizations and schools that participated for just our small area. The opening of the games involved the passing of the torch, a parade led by a local band, the national anthem and opening prayer...and that's just for starters! LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Being that Mudcat has an international population, I am wondering if Special Olympics (sporting event for the mentally and physically challenged) are held outside the United States?

Michelle
