You might want to check a song sheet at   Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads,  March's Royalty Songs: 109 (R. March & Co., 18, St. James' Walk, Clerkenwell, London. Firth b.28(9a/b)). There are 78 song texts and several images, so here is a link to the right page. See She stood behind the parlour door, bottom right-hand corner.

She stood behind the parlour door ("A certain girl once courted me, called Mary Ann Maloney ...")

From Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads, Firth b.28(9a/b), page 7.

SHE STOOD BEHIND THE PARLOUR DOOR
Music Published by Francis, Bros. & Day,
195, Oxford Street, W.
Sung by Harry Freeman.
[between 1877 and 1884]

A certain girl once courted me, called Mary Ann Maloney,
Who simply talked of nothing else but love and matrimony;
And tho' I often told her that to marry would not suit me,
She swore, unless I named the day, she'd have revenge and shoot me.

CHORUS: She stood behind the parlour door, then began to lock it,
Glared at me, looked at the key, and placed it in her pocket,
Held a pistol near my nose, and jumped just like a nigger,
And swore, unless I married her, that she would pull the trigger.

While she stood there with arms in hand, I pictured my poor mother,
And thought with grief the many times I'd whacked my little brother.
I closed my eyes, sank on my knee, oh, how I craved for pardon,
Expecting every moment to be blown into the garden. CHORUS

"Marry me," said she, "or else this weapon I will use it."
I said, "My dear, if that's your love, I really must refuse it.
Fire away whene'er you like." But lor! I did shiver!
Said she, "Consent, or, in a trice, I'll pop it thro' your liver!" CHORUS

I rushed and seized her tiny hand, but all my strength was needed.
I tried to grasp the weapon, and at last I just succeeded;
And oh, the joy I felt to think the thing had not exploded!
But when I came to look, I found the darn'd thing wasn't loaded. CHORUS

[Of course this can't be sung today without finding a different rhyme for "trigger."]

I agree. Might try "and danced just like a jigger."

I have a recording of my Dad, Grandad and Uncles singing this back in the days when they were "The Cheddar Valley Stompers"! (WWII)

Another of their favourite was "She Pushed Me Into The Parlour" but I only have a partial recording they made in the 70's at a family get together "Singaround" made on a rather cheap cassette recorder.

Anybody have all the words?

might just revive the family tradition and record a CD of music hall songs.

PB

Hi PB,
I have the following words for the song above; but I am looking for the music and any other verses, please.

Chorus
She pushed me into the parlour,
She pushed the parlour door,
She pushed herself upon my knee,
She pushed her kisser in front of me,
She pushed me 'round to the jewelers by the Hippodrome,
She pushed me 'round to the clergyman and then she pushed me home.

verse
I'm just a man whose been pushed,
My heart's been cannoned and cushed,
I ain't the kind to fall in love,
I didn't fall I was pushed.
