I just heard it in Walgreens yesterday myself, and you are right...it's Livingston Taylor and Leah Kunkel.

The version you heard in WalMart (of Walgreens), I guarantee you, is sung by Livingston Taylor & Leah Kunkel.

Tom Jans and the lovely Mimi Farina once opened for Cat Stevens at the Opera House in Manchester. They surpassed Cat Stevens (and his string orchestra)too.

I only heard the Livingston Taylor version when it was popular, not any of the others listed. It's on You Tube, and he sang it with Leah Kunkel. Loved the song-still do for that matter.

Right you are, GUEST. There are several songs called LOVING ARMS (or LOVIN' ARMS). The one written by Tom Jans is the best known. It was first recorded by Dobie Gray. A whole slew of others have recorded it: Anne Murray, The Dixie Chicks, Elvis Presley, Etta James, Kelly Wilde, Kenny Rogers, Kris Kristofferson, Livingston Taylor, Millie Jackson, Natalie Cole, Olivia Newton-John, Petula Clark, Rita Coolidge, Tom T. Hall, and many others.

Cindy Walker also wrote a country song called LOVING ARMS which was recorded by Hank Locklin.

Lightnin' Hopkins also wrote a blues song called LOVIN' ARMS.

There are lots more.

Wikipedia and Youtube say the song was written by Tom Jans. Millie Jackson still the best version, though

To each her/his own, I guess. I think Jackson's rendition is too OTT and loud for the feelings I think the lyrics convey. I'm also not a fan of people 'tweaking' the melody so much (for no reason that's apparent to me.)

I like both Kris and Rita's version and The Dixie Chicks' recording better. Partly it's because I like the harmonies better than just a solo voice.   And partly it's because these artists allowed Livingston Taylor's original tune to be heard (at least in most places thru the recordings) instead of needing to "make it their own" by changing the melody.

Here is a You Tube of Kris and Rita singing this song:
"Loving Arms" - Kris and Rita

And here are the full lyrics (I couldn't recall the 3rd verse):

LOVING ARMS
(Tom Jans)

If you could see me now, one who said that he'd* rather roam.
One who said he'd rather be alone,
If you could only see me now.

If I could hold you now, just for a moment if I could make you mine,
Just for a while turn back the hands of time,
If I could only hold you now.

Cho:
I've been too long in the wind, too long in the rain,
Taking any comfort that I can,
Looking back and longing for the freedom of my chains
Lying In your loving arms again.

If you could hear me now singing somewhere through the lonely night,
Dreaming of the arms that held me tight,
If you could only hear me now.

(Cho.)

Livingston wrote many songs that his brother James recorded. I'm seeing Livingston tonight and now wonder if he'll sing this song.

I first heard this song sung by Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge, and I've sung it a number of times myself, though not very recently. These are the lyrics as I remember them.
I know the first verse, chorus, and are correct (at least as Kris and Rita sang them); the only part I"m not sure about is the " I could make you mine" part of the first line of the second verse. I'm also not sure there isn't another verse.

LOVING ARMS
(Tom Jans)

If you could see me now, one who said that he'd* rather roam.
One who said he'd rather be alone,
If you could only see me now.

Cho:
I've been too long in the wind, too long in the rain,
Taking any comfort that I can,
Looking back and longing for the freedom of my chains
Lying In your loving arms again.

If I could hold you now, if for a moment I could make you mine,
Just for a while turn back the hands of time,
If I could only hold you now.

My sister-in-law would like to find the title and lyrics of a song which she says is by Livingston Taylor. One refrain has the phrase..."too long in the rain" ...or "too long in the wind"...

Thanks for any help!

Mike
