There is a full-page ad in todays Washington Post for this group

Its heading is "Could this advertisement SAVE the World?"

These ads are not cheap, but perhaps they already have their first couple members....I think a fellow named Ponzi may be on board already ;>) (scroll down to Foundation Members)

If I understand it correctly, for a fee, (reduced by half if one is a memeber,) these kind folks are willing to think about whatever problem you might present. Hell, I just thought about all of this, decided it was crap and didn't get paid anything! I must be doing it all wrong.

Wait! Wait! What if this is a real organization?? What if we really could save the world by thinking differently??

I feel we should all get together, come up with (what is an endowment exactly) a million bucks and let Mudcat join this thing. That would make us all associates!! We could rule the world!!

MUDCAT RULES THE WORLD!

What a concept!

We could hold our 10 year get together in Malta!! I like this idea more by the minute!

Love, Annamill

First problem we could solve could be how to keep the people who only want music threads happy, while also making a place where people can shoot the breeze together.

Oh, wait... Jeff already did that!

Maybe those New Thinking people should be paying us.

I am going to hold out for the nude thinking thing. I want to work with lots of girl people. And the goat. In Malta. At the meeting in ten years. I don't care what we think about. At all.

And after we answer the first question "what is folk music?" we can go on to the really hard one: "Does 'Celtic' exist, and what is it really?"

Well, their concept of the New Thinking makes pretty good sense to me, but I'm a bit puzzled by their approach to dealing with it in a procedural sense...

The following statements, however, are extremely apt:

"Research at Harvard shows that something like ninety per cent of the errors of thinking are errors of perception. Errors of logic are rare. If perception is limited or inadequate the outcome will be rubbish no matter how excellent the logic.

Goedel's theorem points out that from within a system it is impossible to logically justify the starting points. Such starting points are arbitrary perceptions and assumed values. There is a need to be able to change perceptions."

That, in my opinion, is quite correct. It will be interesting to see who decides to join the organization, assuming it does get formed.

Here's new thinking for them...people who really already are new thinkers don't have to pay a cent to join up and contribute their way of thinking!

A worthy idea they have, perhaps, but how the hell do they expect to get anyone in with new ways of thinking without baggage and agendas attached to their money? Am I being too cynical?

Wonder if these guys ever heard of Noam Chomsky and the general semanticists....

It's tautological to say 90 per cent of errors in thinking come from perception, not logic. Especially if you're restricted to Aristotelean — i.e., linear — logic. Computer nerds wrapped up that argument pretty neatly with the phrase "garbage in, garbage out." That's why the contract theorists all disagreed. The started from different points — Hobbs saw man as basically evil, Locke saw him as basically good and Rousseau said he was neither.
Marx, as far as he's considered a contract theorist, also thought man was basically good and noble. I have no idea who he was watching to arrive at that.....

Anyway, if somebody wants to initiate "new" thinking, they have to chuck out linear logic and look for something else. Chomsky said the person is most successful who best manipulates man's symbols. Never mind substance — it's symbols that count. And he and the general semanticists say logic must be pursued in concentric circles of understanding, not just from Point A to Point B in a logical line. According to them, a person should perceive things in his immediate time/area and all the interconnections between them before expanding the time/area and taking in new things and new connections.

Interesting stuff.

And BTW — I'm not completely convinced this is a hoax or a scam, but I have some pretty serious doubts about the way it's structured. It'll be interesting to watch.

cheers,

david

Man IS good and noble in his basic nature, ddw. And if you observe the majority of people most of the time you will see that they are basically decent, friendly, and wish to be left in peace.

The counterpoint to that is: it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the whole barrel.

If only 1% of a society is composed of aggressive, ruthless, antisocial individuals who are good at accumulating money and firepower they can majorly screw things up for the rest...and that is exactly what tends to happen.

Think back to when you were in school. One or two bullies can mess things up for 100 basically nice kids.

I don't disagree with that assessment of individuals, LH, but if we're talking about the collective, we can't exclude the few who mess it up for everybody. And as long as they exist, then we have to assume the larger entity (i.e., the society in question) is going to act evil and needs to be treated as evil.

We can still be nice to individuals and hope they will be nice to us, but we have to be prepared to deal with those who don't share those values. Never mind the school analogy — think about what's going on in the world right now. Seems to me a few radical Muslims and radical Christians and radical Jews are making things difficult for everybody. And now, god help us, the Buddhists are trying to spread their views so we can have more dissent about beliefs.

Yeah, we really need that....

One other point re the goodness of man.... How do you judge "goodness," since, as long as there are scarce goods (food, shelter, etc.) to be distributed what is "good" for one group; is "bad" for another. Are we all gonna be one big happy family of Earthlings?

I'm not gonna hold my breath for that....

cheers,

david
