I know, I know.
Hotmail is now part of something called Outlook, and all that.

But when I log into my e-mail,
I still have 'hotmail dot com' in the e-mail address, so there.

For the last two or three days,
the Outlook Hotmail site
will let me log in and alter existing drafts,
but it won't save when I ask it to save,
and it won't let me log out
unless I go to msn dot com and log out from there.

I'm darned if I know what's going on.

HELP ME!
I'm having a problem with MSN - and I can't sort it out :(
I got sent a virus thingy over messenger, which i opened before I realised it was a virus. I then deleated the files, once I realised what it was, and ran my full-system virus scanner which turned out nothing and said no viruses had been found.
So I thought it was Ok - but now every time I go on MSN I'm fine for a few minutes, then all my conversation windows flash up and close really quickly and those virus files get sent - and then I can't open up any windows to talk to anyone.
I had 2 versions of MSN on my computer so I uninstalled one of them, but the other won't uninstall - and I can't think of what to do. My virus scanner says there is no virus but I am apparently still sending a virus of some sort to people - HELP ME!
It doesn't seem to affect the computer in any other way - just messenger, the internet is still working and everything, and I'm fine so long as I don't sign in, or try to talk to anyone, so I thought if I unistalled messenger it would be ok - then I could put it in again later, but I can't uninstall it becasue for some reason when I go to 'add/remove programmes' it isn't in the list of programmes!
ANd it won't exit on my toolbar - whenever I try to exit it it says I need to close other things (e.g. outlook and explorer) first - but they arent open!
*waaaaaiiiiiiiiiiilllllllll* god I hate computers!
Why is nothing ever simple!?!?!?!?!??!?!
Please please please help me! I don't even know whose problem this is so I don't know who to call to help!

:-(

Foolestroupe -

The things you guys say about Yahoo have been a major factor in my not getting a DSL connection. They're the ONLY ISP available for it in my area. Of course I could "pass through" to another email service, but I'm not sure I really believe you can get through.

"I have this cottage on the beach, but every few years we get a big storm which causes lots of damage....what SHALL I do?"

"Well, sir...have you considered NOT living right on the beach?"

Too cynical? I dunno....if folks keep using products with constant and recurring problems, just because that's what was given to them when they got their computer, I don't know what to say. Almost program and service offered by Microsoft has better alternatives...usually free ones. I quit Hotmail several years ago, about 2 weeks after it was sold to Microsoft, because the minute M$ owned it, the spam started. I used Outlook Express for 'maybe' 2 months, 7 years ago...then I found Eudora, Pegasus, and other email programs...and now there is Thunderbird. Look 'em up....try 'em...

Telstra, where I worked, used to have a section like that too - they also sent all the drunks there too - or at least manufactured a ready supply - it was the Supply Section - to where I was sent... nuff said...

While there are no specific answers, it is clear that both Hotmail and the "parent" MSN are having some serious problems.

Our MSN email account, which we have had since day 1 (charter members) was just transferred, without notice and without our agreement, from the original POP3 server to an http server. We had rather carefully preserved our POP3 connection on the recommendation from Microsoft Contract Administration that people doing business with them should use POP3. The change is NOT REVERSIBLE. So far as I know, all Hotmail accounts have been on http servers for as long as they have been around.

The difficulty with the transfer to http is that it only really works if you access your email using your web browser. While it has generally been possible to use a "real email" program - even one as crude as Outlook or Outlook Express, it's an "unsupported use" so far as both MSN and Hotmail are concerned. A recently posted notice at the Hotmail NoHelp button states that NO EMAIL CAN BE SENT FROM OUTLOOK OR OUTLOOK EXPRESS if you have a "new" Hotmail account. No definition of "new" is offered; but apparently "old" becomes "new" as soon as they can work their way back to you.

The "explanation" offered by Hotmail is that Outlook and OE actually work for sending out correspondence, and too many people use them to send spam, so they've decided to prohibit their use. As long as you use their "web interface" you're pretty much limited to "casual email." Their web interface prevents using any functional address book, so you either have to address each message separately, or if you define a "contact group" you must send the message to everyone in the group. (The stated limitation is 50 addresses on a single message. There is some evidence that sending the same message separately to more than 50 addresses, in separate messages to each, may cause them to block your sends.)

Since Messenger is an Outlook "extension" I would suspect that problems people are having with it may be related to MSN's and Hotmail's more or less complete conversion to http servers and blocking of Outlook by Hotmail, although I can't really confirm that relationship.

Although MSN does have "Microsoft" in it's ancestry, it appears to be only loosely associated with the rest of the company, hence the almost total lack of support for core Microsoft products. It appears to be kept as a place to send the excess village idiots to keep the home town from getting cluttered. Why else would the instruction "If you have a problem click the help button at the upper right hand corner of the screen" be accessible only after you click the Help button at the upper right hand corner of the screen? Or "If you are having problems with your email, please email our support group"?

John

I agree with Bill D. I got fed up with both Yahoo and Hotmail for my private e-mail so I switched to Fastmail. It is very very good and loads up quickly unlike Yahoo and Hotmail. Little or no pop up and as yet no spam.

if you can access it from OTHER computers, then it seems obvious that some setting is messed up on yours. Do you have to enter the password, or is it set to sign you in automatically? There is usually a place to change a password, or ask them to send you what they THINK your password is....

and I repeat what I said above..Hotmail has more problems than others.

Microsoft trying to fix Hotmail problems

SEATTLE: Microsoft Corp. said on Friday that a "significant portion" of people who use the company's Hotmail e-mail system and other Internet-based products were having trouble accessing the services.

The company said it was an internal problem rather than an attack on its system and that it hoped to have service restored by 5:30 p.m. PST.

The problem began about 8:30 a.m. (11:30 EST).

In addition to Hotmail, the popular Web-based e-mail service, Microsoft said people were having trouble accessing products such as company's MSN Messenger instant messaging program.

Malina Bragg, a spokeswoman with Microsoft's Waggener Edstrom public relations firm, said in an e-mail that the company did not know how many people were having trouble but that "it appears to affect a significant portion of our customers."

Bragg said problem appeared to be affecting people who were trying to log on to the system. Those who were able to get on the system did not appear to be having problems sending and receiving e-mail, she said. —AP

Yahoo bought 'WebRing' and 'fiddled with it so much trying to 'give it the Yahoo interface to integrate it into the Yahoo stable of products' that they broke it terminally and could not fix it. They were just going to trash it, but were persuaded to give it away to some non-profit amateurs, who fixed it in a couple of weeks. However, they refused to transfer all the rings/people, everybody had to request to be transferred....

read my posts above...get a decent web mail host, then forward all your Hotmail and/or Yahoo mail to it...if you can get Hotmail to work long enough. (have you tried forwarding mail?)

I simply do not see why people keep using MicroSoft or Yahoo owned and controlled services when this keeps happening.

These big companies are trying to manipulate the software so that nothing works right unless you use ONLY their systems...and sometimes they screw up even their own in the attempt. It is not NECESSARY to depend on them...there are browsers and email systems and safeguards that function 99% free of these problems. I use IE about 3 times a year, when a site I need has some security system that MUST use ActiveX to work.

Please folks, do yourselves a favor and break out of this trap!

I finally had to give up on Hotmail — it was just too unreliable. I had messages arrive as much as five days after they were sent to me and some of my outbound notes didn't reach where I sent them for up to 24 hours.

I switched to my Yahoo account and it worked well for a few days, then went strange if I'm working out of the Safari browser. If I use Internet Explorer, it seems to be OK.

I realize computer programmers have to eat too, but WHY THE HELL CAN'T THEY LEAVE THINGS ALONE THAT ARE WORKING JUST FINE????!!!!!!

They just did something similar at a bank I deal with. Their "more convenient" access to accounts takes three times as long because they give you way more information than you want.

Aaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhh!

cheers,

david
