Does anybody know of a good recorded version of the sea shanty 'Captain Nipper'.

Cheers

Nothing recent, but I have it on an old Topic LP "Room for Company" (IMP-S-104), recorded in 1972. Apparently the words and music of all the songs on this LP are in a book of the same title, by Roy Palmer, published by Cambridge University Press. Before someone else jumps on you, be aware that it isn't a shanty (sailors' work song) but a song sung for amusement during the men's off watch (forebitter). Roy Palmer's notes say that the song was first published in 1914.

On the 15th of September
And well I do remember
I nearly broke my poor old mother's heart
For I shipped with Captain Nipper
On a big four-masted clipper
Headed way down south to foreign parts.

CH: And the wind began to blow
And the ship began to roll
And a devil of a hurricane did blow-i-o
And it nearly knocked the stuffing
From the good ship Ragamuffin
And we thought to the bottom we would go.

I'm sorry to say I don't remember the rest, but when I can dig out the tape it's buried on I will post more. I have a recording of Jim Mageean and Johnny Collins singing this at Mystic in 1981 or 1982.

(and I had noticed the date of the post, but as the thread is recently referenced as unanswered request for tune, maybe someone wants it apart from the original poster)

And see thread Origins: good ship ragamuffin for a (presumably) full text from an unacknowledged source.
