No Scottie didn't write it, it was a fellow from Wolverhampton who's name escapes me at the minute. May have to go and dig through the old LPs in the garage if no one comes up with it. Great song though!

Hi - we got this song from a lady called Jan at Broadstairs Festival who said that her Guitar Tutor had written it. I'll dig out the words and pass them on if you can let me have an e.mail address.
I think the song is about ex servicemen trying to make a living on the streets - but who knows
Better still e.mail Maggie at banjogirl66@hotmail.com as she is the one who sings it and has the music

Here we are in London, trying to make a stand
D Am Am7
Do the dance now, Davey.
Seen so many chances fall from clumsy hands.
Do the dance now, Davey.

This old guitar is fast forgetting how to sing.

According to the sleeve notes on Colin Scot's album (Colin Scot United Artists UAG29154), "Do the Dance Now, Davey" was written by Martin Hall and published by Belsize Music. When I get a minute, I'll post the lyrics.

That same album also featured two other Martin Hall songs: "You're Bound to Leave Me Now" and "Here we are in Progress", along with Mudcatter Harvey Andrews' "Hey Sandy", Neil Innes' "Lead Us", and, my personal favourite, "Baby in my Lady" by Mike Newbury.

The album is a bit "overproduced", but serves as a poignant reminder of Scotty, who was more than just a bit popular in the late '60s and early '70s. He died in Amsterdam some years ago.

I could cut a cassette or maybe even a CD if anyone were interested.

PM me if you are.

Alan

I used to do this one in the clubs, in the '70s! I learned it from a friend of mine, so I have no guarantee that the words are 100% accurate, or that the second part of each verse belongs to the respective first half, but it does seem to be the logical chronological progression. You obviously know where all the "do the dance now, Davey" bits are, so ignoring those, this was the way I knew it:

Here we are in London, trying to make a stand...
Seen so many chances fall from clumsy hands...
They give us pennies for the years that we have spent,
With any luck we'll make enough to pay the rent...

Say, do you remember 1945...
Glad to leave the army, glad we're still alive...
Marching round the city, 'cos we can't forget the drill,
Hard to find a job when all you know is how to kill...

One more time for Queenie, -not that Queenie cares...
Queenie built the Empire -here in Leicester Square...
This old guitar is fast forgetting how to sing,
Will you still be near me when I've broken all the strings?..

I THINK that there were only the three verses, and no-one ever told me I'd missed one out! Hope this helps.

Kit Griffiths

I remember learning this song from Doug Porter who recorded a version of this on his album. The words that have been uploaded are pretty much how I remember it.
Doug used to come out to Germany and tour around the Raf and Army camps. He was a great singer fo songs and had a great sense of humour. He also used to play in a band called the Lonesome Travellers Sadly no longer with us.

Yeah, Doug Porter did an excellent version of this, NEEDLESSS TO SAY ITS the version I learned.
Proud to say Doug was a good friend & we did a number of gigs together. The other sing he did well was a version of Byards,Leap a place not too far from where I live now. God bless you Dougie
