Better to discuss it over a round of ammunition. RIP jOhn and your fIlk clOb.

Just a tip jOhn - Give up the folk scene and spend your time at adult literacy classes. Now THAT'S harsh.

I believe something is being lost in the translation....here in the Americas "rubbish" generaly refers to trash, brasura, refuse, garbage.

What ARE you trying to say jOhn? From what I have read is appears Hull in a college town with a delightful set of low-cost-housing that has become a model for the world.

Surely, your "rubbish" must have a another UK meaning than what we yanks believe...you know...something like the confusion we have with:boat, bonnet, bird, bummer?

What ARE you trying to say jOhn? Many of us are now politely listening....what IS your message?....you have all our attention?

Sinceely,
Gargoyle

John -sorry I was guilty for not going but I already go to 2 weekly folk clubs, the monthly Monk's Session and the festival season is beginning, as well as helping to organise EthnoEngland, decorate and look for a job and after grandchildren. My other half is anti folk as you know and there is only so much time available. We were very quiet this week as well, so it was probably timing-don't beat yourself up over it.

I don't know if it's rubbish - I don't know where it is. If somebody tells me then maybe I'll try it next time I'm visiting my old home town (instead of going to up to Nellie's perhaps).

I'm sorry you feel we've pissed you off John... I work hard too and my leisure time is precious... we gave it a try on the first night and no the club wasn't rubbish... but we prefer real ale and are unlikely to have a full evening out... with a longish walk and taxi home to drink something we don't enjoy.... I think the same fate befell Geoff's club at the Bull.

Breezy may have used harsh words (subtlety and sensitivity are not his strongest points) but he IS successful in the clubs he runs.

Publicity is probably the most important point - yes he does hi-jack other threads and takes every opportunity (visiting other clubs, flyers, posters etc) to tell people about what's on at his clubs

Once you've got them in, it's value for money that will bring them back in. Give them what they want - it may be just a sing-a-round, the occasional guest or (like Breezy) popular and "big" names every week.

Not an easy thing creating a successful club. Some weeks, no matter what, will be disappointing. Don't give up yet. At Herga we've sometimes been down to 4 singers and we're still running after 41 years.

The Friday Folk Club, Deal, got down to about half a dozen regulars at one time but we kept going despite losing our venue. We've now been kicked out of another venue (thanks Shepherds Neame!!) but have found a new home in the Royal Marine Association Club. Despite these setbacks, the audience is growing and now regulary hits between 20-30 which ia a lot for a room over the bar. Unfortunately the room is pre-booked for a function tonight but not to be deterred, we're all meeting in a member's house and bringing our own booze - which will be just as much fun but cheaper than the club! Anyway jOhn, the answer is perseverance, a few good guest artists occasionally and,as has been said, advertising. We rely on What's On Folk, a Kent mag now run by Kathy & Bob Drage - must be working as we're still going despite some tough times. So don't give up - keep on folkin' in Hull!!! (although I'm from Halifax meself)

John

Remember the time when you and I were the only ones in the acoustic workshop in the Sun? Now, if you don't get there by about ten past eight you can't get a seat - we regularly get 20 -30 players there every week. So life can get better.

So probably your folk club is a non-starter, and crap too.

Rather harsh words Breezy, you should know better. I ran a folk club for six years too and sometimes shit happens.

Don't get downhearted jOhn. You have tried to make it happen and if you stick with it I'm sure it will. Hull is packed with talented folkies and you just need to keep the word going round and it WILL build up, especially if you create a welcoming ambience. YOU took the initiative and deserve credit for that. I'd have come only I live in Belgium now.

All the best mate!

Peace

It's a long drive up from SE London jOhn.

On the other hand, when myself, Linda, Les, & Yorkshire Yankee turned up at the curry ship last Saturday afternoon - it was shut ! It did evidently open about 1/2 hour later, but by that time we were on our way back across the bridge. You never did turn up at the Eurogathering, so we've got the huff now !

Don't take it personally, jOhn, sh*t happens>
I don't frequent folk clubs but the jazz/blues club I go to often has poor attendances despite good bands. They blame: footy on telly, the weather, the night of the week etc. but I suspect it is down to poor publicity. There are very few of us who turn out every week (pushed out of the door by our better halves- even driven to the club to make sure we're out!) whoever is on, so you need to have a wider range of occasional visitors to make up the numbers and that means letting them know what's on. Most local papers are desperate fo copy so an "infomercial" article on the club and the upcoming attractions, an "interview" (ie press release) with an artist etc might get people coming. Our club is getting better attendances now, and I'm sure it's just beter publicity, including a regularly updated website.
...and the rest of you Hullcats: give jOhn the support he deserves, (I'm sure he'll always wear it), I'm sure running a club is a thankless task at times.

when no-one came to my singaround in 2002, well 7 came I decided that I had to book guest everyweek as a focus of attention,an interest factor.
So now I have had 3 good years, built up a good club that books big names.
Non - attendance tells you that if you have nothing, you will get nothing.
So probably your folk club is a non-starter, and crap too.
But who am I to say?
Forward planning means that I have guest booked till May 2005, just hope Vin G and Bob F are still going then

Good luck.
