The twelve bar blues is a chord progression of twelve bars in length in 4/4 time. An example would be Cocaine Blues . The twelve bars would just be repeated.

The regular scheme is (supposed you play in the key of C):

C - C (or F)- C - C

F - F- C - C

G - F - C - G (or C)

Listen to whatever Blues (best to simple ones), and you´ll dicover this harmonic scheme in let´s say 90% of them! Good Luck,

Daniel

The twelve bar blues is a deceptively versitile structure that is the basis of most blues. Many say that it is boring. I find it is simple vehicle to tell what ever is on my mind> Have fun

The classic twelve bar blues also has a classic poetic pattern:

(B7) . . Well, it's good (E)morning, blues. (A7)Blues, how do you (E)do?. . . (E7)
I said good (A7)morning, blues. (A7)Blues, how do you (E)do? . . .(E) .
Well, I'm (B7)doin' all right, son; good (A7)morning, how about (E) you?. . .(B7) . . .

Notice the use of the IV7 chord instead of the IV chord--common to a lot of blues.

Another common type of turnaround (the last two bars) might be /E E7 A Am /E . B7 . /

The use of a rhythm based on thirds (12 to the bar, three to a beat) is also commonly used:

/one and uh two and uh three and uh four and uh/

Hi Lucille,

So glad you decided to join. If you haven't already, take the time to read the top thread "Mudact FAQ - Newcomer's Guide." There is a ton of info and it will give you a feel for the place. Yes, you have found heaven on...well, in cyberspace. There is no place like the Mudcat. In fact, there are probably Mudcatters near where you are. It is a great treat to hook up with other Mudcatters in the flesh. I envy you and the excitement you will feel as you discover the goings on here. Watch out for a gut named Catspaw49 (or 'Spaw). His antics have caused some to actually "roll on the floor and laugh their ass off."

Its what happens on a pub crawl.....by the time you get to the 12th bar, you don't want to drink anymore and get the blues.....or you've imbibed to much and are crying in your beer......

Sorry, please ignore this
