Subject: Lyr Req: A song with 'gum-boil on her knee'???
From: mollyosb
Date: 09 May 04 - 02:53 PM

My mother remembers her grandmother singing her a song when she was little (early 1930s) that included a line "and she had a gum-boil on her knee." Unfortunately, she can't remember any of the rest of it, and has started to question her sanity! Does that ring any bells???

Thanks...

I have a tooth ache,
and a pimple on me bum

There's something like this in the thread called Lyr Add: Cat's Got the Measles.

Thread #53450   Message #822906

Thread Name: Lyr Add: Cat's Got the Measles (Walter Smith)
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Cat's Got the Measles

Our cat's no hair on, no hair on, no hair on,
Our cat's no hair on, so come and have a look.
And if you don't believe me, believe me, believe me,
If you don't believe me, then come and have a look.

I've got a pimple, a gum-boil, a belly-ache,
I've got a pimple; a pimple on me bum.
And if you don't believe me, believe me, believe me,
If you don't believe me, then come and have a look.

Learnt at my granny's knee, Guest, Richie,:-) - is this anything to do with your song?

Jay

Yeah, it had a kind of nyah-nyah tune. I've got a toothache, an earache, a bellyache, a pain in me tummy and a gumboil on me knee. I think there were also further ailments, but either they've been cured or forgetfulness has been added!

"I've got a gum boil, a toothache, a belly ache, a pain in my left knee, a pimple on my chin!" (Are you all sure it is on your bum?)

Where can we get the song!? I need it to teach health vocab to my class of English learners.

The version we sang;

Our cat's no hair on
No hair on
No hair on
Our cat's no hair on
It has to wear a wig

If you don't believe me
Believe me
Believe me
If you don't believe me
Come and have a look

I've got a gum boil
A pimple
A belly ache
I've got a gumboil
A pimple on me bum

Sung without aspirates

Mike

My memory of the song is similar to others:

The Cat has a toothache, a gumboil, a bellyache
A pain in her left leg and a corn on her toe
Mother when you die, will you leave me the fiddle-oh?
Mother when you die, sure you won't bring me?

I remember my father singing a song something like that. It went:
"The cat's got the measles, the gumboil, the tummyache,
A delicate constitution and water on the brain"

Tune "The Keel Row" and vintage perhaps 1930s.

I suspect this is from the song known as the Bald Headed End of The Broom which I collected in Australia as the Honeymmon Song. Words on my site www.warrenfahey.com and search for ,honeymoon, or herb green songs

I have Mike Harding singing it on A Lancashire Lad album too.

When I started reading the thread, my mind drifted to a poem about a girl's knee, which I think was written by Bill Oddie;

There's a girl in 3C with a wart on her knee
And a pimple upon her behind.
I gave her 3p and she showed it to me
Don't you think that was awfully kind?

ps Wonder what she'd do for a wine gum?

I've heard it like this by a senior I look after, he's in his 90's

The cats got a gumboil a belly ache a tooth ache pains on her insides and a pimple on her nose. He wants to hear this on a violin but I have no idea what this tune is called. I've looked at what people have suggested and the lyrics simply don't match what he described. can anyone help me find this?

Everyone else seems to be singing Keel Row.
My thought on reading the title was the tune Susannah
with a banjo (gumboil) on my knee

I'm sure we could creatively 'remember' a version to that tune.

My Dad (born 1922) used to sing "I've got a gum boil, a toothache, a belly ache, a pain in my left knee, and a pimple on me bum" It was to a jaunty tune. BTW, look up the symptoms/complications of a gum boil and the tootache and belly ache could tie in, but I don't know about the knee pain...
