My apologies: the first line should read: ""I put a slug in the gum machine"

Note that the closing quote was left off in the original sheet music. I suppose it wouldn't have harmed anything by adding it here, but might as well faithfully reproduce it.

Despite a library just a county or two over from me having the sheet music to this song, the inter library loan came all the way from Idaho! However, I can confirm that this was the requested song.

Here's how it was printed in H. W. Hanemann's Soft boiled ballads: a collection of heart-wrecking songs, pages not numbered. The song was given a copyright date of 1931, meaning it has entered the public domain.

THE SLUG IN THE SLOT MACHINE
(H. W. Hanemann)

In a gloomy cell in Sing-Sing there sat a handsome lad;
Though young, his sad career had lined his face.
Unpracticed eyes could tell at once his ethics they were bad,
Or what would he be doing in that place?
"How have you came to fall so low"? a social worker cried,
And as he pinched the worker's watch, the handsome youth replied:

REFRAIN
"I put a slug in gum machine, in the happy long ago.
It seemed at the time, more a lark than a crime.
But how was I to know?
Success made me bold and ambitious,
I soon was socking gents on the bean;
So it's due to the gum,
That I am a bum!
Curse that slug in the slot machine!

Unfortunately the newspapers.com reference isn't very informative. This link provides more info in the situation than the article.

I believe the song could be "The slug in the slot machine" from         H W Hanemann's Soft boiled ballads : a collection of heart-wrecking songs. If library loans go according to plan, I should be able to confirm that in a few days.

"I Put a Slug in a Slot Machine In Vegas and What Do Ya Think Come Out?"

The only reference I can find is at

https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/149090773/

Because I can't read the article I don't know if there's more than what is quoted. With or without quotation marks, Google give nothing more.

Not your song, but worth posting(?).

Lyr. Add: LOVIN' MACHINE
Lambert Merrill. Sung by Wynonie Harris

Yes, it's real gone
Hand you my lovin', you know what I mean
Feels so bad I built a lovin' machine
Up to my house, I'll show you what I mean
Well, I just got wise and built me a lovin' machine.

Well you put a nickel in the slot
You hear sounds buzzin'
Kisses wild and hot
Five cents a dozen.

Up to my house, I've got something you'vr never seen
Well I got hip to the tip and built me a lovin' machine.

Well you pull the level on the right
Two arms jump out
Wrap all around you
Make you scream and shout.

Up to my house, I've got something you've never seen
I just built me a brand new lovin' machine.

Drop a nickel in!

You put a quarter in the slot
Things light up
Out comes your lovin' in a Dixie cup.

Up to my house I've got something you've never seen
I got wise to myself and built me a lovin' machine.

Well it will love you all day
If you feel run down
You don't have to worry
Run all over town.

When my machine finishes
That ain't all
Out comes a bottle of alcohol.

Up to my house try my lovin' machine
Well after twenty-four hours you'll know what I mean.

I couldn't remember any of the words besides "I put a slug in the slot machine". Robin to this day 9 times out of 10 I awake my two girls with that song on school mornings. I usually throw in but I didn't get a dog gone thing, I mean, hey it kind of rhyme and make sense to. I tried to google the song but, with no success. If I am not mistaken Gore (Dusty) Gaines knows more words. All I know is I will never forget his majestic voice. Every word Mutt spoke seemed like words of wisdom. No one man has taught me so much, from the Native American legends surrounding the constellations to how to catch a snipe. RIP Mr. Mutt Miller, still today my true moral compass.

Subject: Words: I Put a Slug in a Slot Machine

My old Boy Scout Scoutmaster used to wake us up on campouts by singing an old song as he rattled the tents. The only words I can remember hearing following:

I put a slug in a slot machine
In a happy long ago.
It seemed at the time
more a lark than a crime,
But how was I to know?

This is all I remember hearing him sing of it before sticking his head into the tent and telling us "Up and at 'em"

Any help with this song or the lyrics would be sincerely appreciated
