For several years I had occasional thoughts of obtaining some and sharing them with my older sister before telling her what they were. I'm fairly sure she would have recycled them when she found out. |

Looks like 2004 had the largest range of any of the 17-year cicadas. But this year will be no slouch in range--second on the list. The return of the cicadas is great news as far as I'm concerned. They are expected to be seen here in the Washington, DC area in May of 2013. They are large insects, about an inch and a half long, with black bodies, red eyes and delicate wings. There are far too many to count. You see them everywhere--on the sidewalk, on the trees, on the porch, on the street. Cicadas of the same life cycle are known collectively as a single "brood". There are 12 broods of 17-year cicadas. As a result, it is possible to find cicadas in almost any year by traveling to the appropriate location. The group expected in the capital region this spring, known as Brood 2, are the offspring of cicadas last seen in 1996. ....... Specific groups of periodical cicadas are called "Broods." Entomologists have devised a chart that documents the emergence of these groups. There are twelve "Broods" that appear in the northeastern part of the United States in different years. This year, the lucky area is Brood X. Brood X refers to certain parts of fifteen states (DE, GA, IL, IN, KY, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TN, VA, WVA) and Washington DC. Couldn't keep them out of the frying pan. We have Wichitty grubs that taste great deep fried, but I have to compete with our tame Magpies who like them raw straight from the wild. It's not kind to deep fry them without chopping off their heads quickly first. Joy |

They're related to shrimp and crawdads, so just take the wings and legs off and throw 'em in hot fat. A little salt and cayenne.. Or when you've fried 'em and they've cooled, dip 'em in melted chocolate. Lots of beer helps. Seamus |
