I was just putting music in my Itunes, and I came across Mitch's CD, Unusual Suspect, so I put it in, and suddenly wondered about the man I met only once when I rode the Skunk Train with my little girl, about 5 years ago. He was playing his banjo and mandoline, and I was amazed at his incredible talent. I loved the music! We talked a lot on his breaks, and I enjoyed his outlook on life, and his attitude toward the music. It was a very memorable trip, because of him. I bought the CD, of course. While I was downloading music, I wondered if he had put out any more CD's, so I checked online for him...and found this. I am so sorry to hear such a wonderful person and musician has passed away so suddenly, and so early. He left a lasting impression on me, and I only ever saw him one time, for about two hours. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be one of his family or friends...

I don't know if you remember me, but I have red hair, and I too lived in Ventura during those same years in the mid 70's. I was over at your place to visit with Mitch quite frequently. You lived right down the alley from "John's at the Beach" Restaurant. He used to play at the "Open Mike" there, and we would go to support him while enjoying a cold pitcher of beer off the tap.

Mitch and I were in the Navy together and served aboard the U.S.S. Norton Sound, home-ported at Port Hueneme. I kept in contact with Mitch all through the years, and he actually played a big part in my decision to move up to Northern California myself. He was a great friend and I will miss him dearly.

I just ran across this thread, so pardon me as I grieve here. I was Mitch's room mate when we lived on the beach in Ventura in the mid-70s. We both shared a love of the guitar and we both kind of learned it together in those days. We were college students, beach bums and wannabe musicians. I had lost touch with Mitch over the years, but I can still see his radiant smile like it was yesterday. I was there the night Mitch made his "debut" playing his 12-string in a beach joint. I'm glad to see he became something of a performer. It was certainly in his blood. My condolences to all.

Part of the memorial compilation I put together was actually recorded at that performance.

I was putting together photos of Mitch, and didn't have any of him playing on the Skunk Train, so I will definately be emailing you about those.

I just learned about this thread today and I'm glad to have the opportunity to share some of my thoughts and stories with all of you who knew and loved Mitch.

I am so grateful that I got to spend some time with Mitch on two successive weekends during the summer of 2001 when I was in northern California on business. It was the first time we'd seen each other, to the best of my recollection, in about twenty-two years! Although much time had passed since we'd been together, it didn't seem like it at all--Mitch was as open and brotherly to me as though we'd never been apart.

I got to ride the Skunk Train and hear him perform. I'll never forget the expressions on the faces of the Asian tourists who had never seen or heard a banjo before--they were simply awestricken by Mitch's performance. I, too, was blown away by his passion and musicianship. I took lots of digital photographs that I'd be happy to share with anyone who's interested. Just e-mail me at [e-mail] and I'll send you what I have.

I also got to see him perform with Kristine, Dan, and Marc at one of the local wineries and I was really impressed with the entire band. I remember thinking that they really had something special going on. I took pictures at the winery, too. My camera doesn't have a zoom lense, so I had to stand right in front of the stage to get good shots. Anyone remember that?

We had coffee together one Sunday morning in a little cafe in Willits and I remember how relaxed I felt just being there with Mitch. With his charm and terrific sense of humor, he could really make a person feel at ease. Of course, anyone who knew Mitch knows exactly what I'm talking about.

My last night in California, we had dinner at the Konocti Harbor Resort and attended a concert there together. Later, we went to a saloon in Ukiah to hear a band play that Mitch knew. I stayed so late I had to drive to Sacramento afterwards with no sleep to catch my early morning flight. Just great memories that I will always cherish!

Mitch Uharriet

Mitch Uharriet, a diving coach, self-taught folk musician and former Santa Rosa firefighter, died of a heart attack May 12 at his Mendocino County home. The Redwood Valley man was 48.


He was born Raymond Mitchell Uharriet in Los Angeles on Nov. 3, 1955, and moved with his family as a young boy to San Jose. There, he attended Pioneer High School, where he excelled on the diving team.


He served in the Navy for three years in the mid-1970s and was stationed in Long Beach, where he served aboard a ship as a firefighter.


"He liked it so much that he wanted to further his studies in it and become a firefighter" professionally, recalled his sister, Annie Uharriet of Rainier, Ore. "That was just like Mitch.... He really went for it, just like his music."


After studying fire science at a Southern California college and working in the Coast Guard, his sister said, Uharriet moved to Santa Rosa and took a job with the Santa Rosa Fire Department in 1979.


In the mid- to late 1980s, however, a back injury forced Uharriet out of firefighting. Dejected, Uharriet turned to music for solace, training himself in the fiddle, banjo and mandolin.


"He taught himself out of desolation; what a lesson that is," said Jack Sklena, a longtime friend and neighbor in Redwood Valley. "He never passed any of his troubles along. He just wanted to bring joy and pleasure and happiness to everyone he met."


Uharriet performed weekly at Redwood Valley Community Church and, billing his forte as "Bluegrass to the British Isles," played in pubs, cafes, wineries, fairs and contests.


"It wasn't always for money," his younger sister recalled. "Mitch just wanted to keep the music alive."


For most of the past 10 years, Uharriet also coached diving at Ukiah High School.


In addition to his sister, Uharriet is survived by his father, Raymond Uharriet, and stepmother, Marilyn Uharriet, both of Hooper, Utah; four half brothers, Brad Fischer of Henderson, Nev., Bart Uharriet of Starkville, Miss., James Uharriet of Fort Carson, Colo., John Uharriet of Weston, Fla.; and half sister Jennifer Uharriet of Hooper.


A memorial service was Sunday at Redwood Valley Community Church. His remains were cremated.

The memorial CD Kristine gave me at the service is fabulous. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It brings back so many memories of Mitch over the years. So many of his favorite tunes are on it.

A couple of questions... Does anyone know where Mitch learned "Home With the Girls?" I remember when he first played it for me several years back. He was so excited about it at the time. Did anyone play "The Blackest Crow" with him? I know he learned it for the Cloverdale Fiddle Contest earlier this year, but alas, I missed hearing him play it.

I wish to thank everyone that attended Mitch's service on Sun. I was so overwhelmed at the service I did not get to talk with most of you, but I am certainly glad you could be there. What an amazing service it was. Pastor Kevin McDougall Did a wonderful job. I applaud you sir. The Praise Team was also met with great joy. Fabulous job kids!! And afterwards at the Ice cream social when the musicians got together to play music togeather I just know Mitch was enjoying it as much as everyone was. As I only learned of his passing this afternoon, it was too late to make the service, which is frustrating because I'm only 1/2 hour away and was doing nothing worthwhile today anyway. Perhaps I can make it to Potter Valley on Friday. I just ordered the CD, looking forward to getting it. In the meantime I have a copy of the String Creek Band demo tape that Mitch, Ken Burnett, and Bob Eisenhauer made at Spencer Brewer's in '96, as well as a tape of our KZYX appearance, full of Mitch's commentary (and bad jokes!) that I can listen to in remembrance of him. Mitch Uharriet's memorial service was standing room only, when I arrived. His fellow musicians played tributes for him which were all lacking his unique way of making them sound. It was like you could recognize the song and that Mitch wasn't playing it, for probably the first time ever. A young boy played violin in his place; and it was beautiful to see his ability to recall Mitch in style and presence. No better tribute can be made by any student; for the teacher. The sanctuary was filled with such a cross section of Mitch's life. So many young people were there. So many of us who were unfamiliar with each other, because we all knew Mitch from where we found him and didn't all share him together. I kept thinking to myself about how thrilled he would have been to be there with us all. I can't believe he wasn't there with us. Teach music to children every chance you can find. And sing out loud in front of people.

Dan, I'm sorry you didn't learn about his passing sooner. We just got back from the memorial service, which was a wonderful coming together of folks from all parts of Mitch's life. In the service itself, the pastor, Kevin Mcdougal, reflected on who Mitch was and the many things he was involved with. The church group who Mitch loved and played with shared some of the songs that he especially loved. A few of us who were in Night n' Gael played some songs, and the pastor opened it up for people to share stories and memories. Afterwards, we had a potluck and an ice cream party, and then many musicians jammed for hours, playing all the songs that Mitch loved. It was wonderful meeting family and friends from his past and present, but sad that it takes this sort of thing to bring us all together. For you local folks, there will be another musical session in Mitch's honor at the Potter Valley Cafe this coming Friday. Night n' Gael opened the Cafe, and Kimber and Barbara and Skip Newell have been close friends.

I was saddened to learn of Mitch's passing only about 1/2 hour ago. My mother brought me a copy of the Daily Journal from Ukiah where she was visiting her dad when she picked up the paper and saw the obituary and brought it home to me. I knew and played with Mitch many times, and I spoke to him on the phone a few months ago after my return to this part of the state. I was looking forward to jamming with him at Wild Iris this year, and it will be that much emptier without him there. I played with him many times in the String Creek Band, did a live show with him and Bob Eisenhauer on KZYX for Lunch On The Back Porch, played a gig at the Fair in Ukiah with them and we put together a little Celtic group and played at the Celtic Fair in Willits, calling ourselves Tinker's Damn. I will miss him, and my heart goes out to all his friends and family.

I knew Mitch for about the last 5 years. He played the mandolin in the Praise Band at Redwood Valley Community Church. I was priviledged to be able to listen to him as we practiced or played for a couple hours a week. What a man! I wish I could repeat some of his great jokes. If someone messed up he would say "thats an ice cream offense". He was a great mentor for the young musicians. He loved to use his instrument to praise God. The song he seemed to enjoy the most was playing the lead on Banjo for "I`ll Fly Away" We will sing it again Sunday at the memorial service followed by ice cream. The memorial service is at 1 pm at Redwood Valley Community Church. Heading North on Hy101Take the West Road exit and turn right and then right again at School Way (at the stop sign) go about 1 mile the church is on the right immediatly after the RR tracks.

All the sales will go to a memorial fund.
Plus, there is a tribute compilation CD of his live performances being put together...complete with his jokes and general humor.

I think everyone who buys a copy of Mitch's CD will get the other one free...

Hello All,
Just a quick update:
From all the responses I have recieved over the last 5 days(EM's, phone calls, visitors, etc.) I think that there will be an impromptu musical jam session (right after services on Sun.) for which this county and perhaps this state has ever seen!!! Lots and lots of musicians that have ever played with Mitch will be there. Please try to make the services if you can. What a tribute to my big brother this will be. Yea!!!

Played music with him for years...now he's gone.

Funny, thinking back. All that crazy stuff seems so important now. I guess it is that way when you lose someone. But those were some good times.

He was wry and spry and every day now we talk about him and the funny Mitchisms he would say.

Gonna miss him. He knew I would. I know cause he told me "You'll miss me when I'm gone, won't ya, I know I'm right."

I told him he wouldn't be gone for a while...
I guess we never know how long it will be.

Think I'll post some of those Mitchisms in a new tread on Kristine's site.

Mitch was my beloved band mate for three years, and I just can't believe he's gone. I've been teary eyed all week and missing him terribly. I have pictures spread all over my bed which reflect his many characters. It's wonderful to come here and see his name on this website (which he first told me about,) and all the posts from so many who loved him.

I have set up a tribute forum on my website, and plan to give a copy of all the entries to his sister. I am also putting together a compilation of studio and live performances with Mitch. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to someone who brought so much joy to those he came in contact with. I can't even remember when I first met Mitch. Being a long time friend of Annie's (I think she was 18 when we met?, correct me if I'm wrong Annie!) Mitch was just a young man at the time too.

I remember Mitch and his talent as a ventrilouquist and how he entertained my children when they were very young. Even back then Mitch could pick like the best! I am so thankful that I have Mitch's Unusual Suspect CD and will cherish the sounds that eminate through the stereo for years to come.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I wish I could be with you through this difficult time but since I can't be with you in person I will be with you in spirit, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Mitch died on 11 May 04. He passed away of a heart attack while in slumber. He is survived by his Father, Step mother, Myself, and 5 half sibilings, Uncles, Aunts and a whole lot of Cousins.
Mitch produced 2 albums, one on cassett and one on CD. I can't remember the name of the tape, but I will look for it and get back to you.
This is a great forum. I hope to see more of these obits from you all.
Mitch is a pickin' and grininn in my heart, I hope yours too.

I won't be able to attend the services...........would be a 4 hour trip for me, and have the flu right now. So, will send many prayers, as i have been doing since i heard the news. Mitch lovingly called me his WSM (Wicked Step Mother)....
Our family - his father, three brothers, a sister and their families - are going to miss our Mitchwell terribly. We join his sister, Annie and their brother, Bradley, in thanking all those who loved Mitch so much, too.
These tributes are soooo very nice. We hope to meet most of you at the Redwood Valley Memorial on May 23, along with his Uharriet relatives: Uncle John and family and his Aunt Cecile and family.

Mitch was my best friend for 25 years. HE ROCKED OUR WORLD! He loved life and music and had a great big heart. I loved him dearly and will miss him forever. Even though I moved to AZ years ago we called each other all the time and got to visit and jam occasionally. We are getting ready to come to Northern California to celebrate his life with frinds and family.

The last time I saw Mitch was the summer of '01 He came to Utah to visit. He entertained the family with his fiddle playing, particularly my 6 yr old daughter Emily. She was fascinated with him and his easy going sense of humor and youthful excitement. When it came time to say good bye, I hugged him and told him I loved him...I'll hang on to that one.

John, you have my deepest sympathy.........and i most sincerely hope that this wasn't the way that you found out about your brother. I just saw Mitch on May Day, when we were performing, and he looked terrific and happy. And super supportive, as he always was of our music and performances.
