When Irish girls grow up they usually become Irish Mammies.
Anyone who remembers the wonderful Anna Manahan in the UK television series 'Me Mammy' will know how awe-inspiring they can be!
The last line of the whole series, uttered by her friend when her put-upon son 'Bunjie' finally defied her and got married was ' Never mind, you've made his life hell as a Mammy, just think of the fun you'll be able to have as a Mammy-in-law!'

AnneMC,
Thanks a bunch. This is just great. I have searched the net for this song and had no luck. I really appreciate you taking the time to write it out for me. May all your audiences be appreciative and all the promoters generous. Thanks again.
Ron

The bracketed chords are for the word preceding them. (I'm not the musician, I only sing it ! Not sure if the chords should be placed before or after the word the change is on.)

        When Irish Girls Grow Up
        (Tom Russell)

1.        Darlin(A) don't go to the city, you'll get lost (D)there in the crowd(A)
All the boys there in the city, drink and smoke(Bm) and talk too loud(E)
And the women(A) in the city sneak(D) their whisky (A)from a cup
Oh, isn't it a pity when Irish(E) girls grow up (A)?

Have you heard (D)of Mary Gill(A)igan?
She's been gone about three (A)weeks
She's painted up her lips, when all the colour(Bm) left her cheeks(E)
She never (A)goes to Mass no more, she gave (D)her virtue up(A)
Oh, isn't it a pity when Irish (E)girls grow up (A)?

2.        Have you heard about the Cooneys, the Russells(D) and Malloys (A)?
Their girls all left the farm and went to chasin' (Bm)city boys(E)
Their mothers (A)pray to Mary that their girls(D) won't turn corrupt(A)
Oh isn't it a pity, when Irish (E) girls grow up (A)?

Oh God (D) forgive me sayin' it, but I swear (A)that it's all true
The Lord should strike me dead, should this beset(Bm) the likes of you(E)
Your lips (A)will not touch alcohol, it's tea (D)that you shall sup(A)
Oh, isn't it a pity, when Irish(E) girls grow up (A)?

                                 INSTRUMENTAL

3.        Repeat Verse 1

Dolores Keane sings it on Tom Russell`s "folk-opera" concept-album "The man from god knows where", which is a circle of songs gealing with his family`s history. Great album, highly recommended.
Hope this helps...

Does anyone have the Chords and lyrics for "When Irish Girls Grow Up". I heard it by Delores Keane, but I believe it was written by Tom Russell. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Ron
