Subject: Lyrics Req. (from 1950s) 7 Little Girls
From: Rabbi-Sol
Date: 19 May 04 - 07:06 PM

When I went to the movies as a kid, there was an intermission between the double feature. The theatre used to play recorded music. There was a song about "7 little girls sitting in the back seat of an automobile, hugging and kissing with Fred". There was a chorus that started out "Keep your mind on your driving, keep your hands on the wheel". I would appreciate any help in finding this song. SOL ZELLER

The name of the song is "Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Back Seat," by Lee Pockriss and Bob Hilliard. Excerpts from that song have been posted many times over the years (seven times, to be exact), but we didn't get the entire text until Jim Dixon posted it in April, 2004 - (click).
No need to post it again.

SEVEN LITTLE GIRLS SITTING IN THE BACK SEAT
(Hilliard / Pockriss)

Paul Evans & The Curls
and
The Avons - 1959 (they had the biggest hit here in the UK)

It was also a small hit by Bombalurina featuring Timmy Mallett in April 1991 and March 1992

(Dee doody doom doom, dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Seven little girls sittin' in the back seat
Huggin and a'kissin with Fred
I said "why don't one of you come up and sit beside me?"
And this is what the seven girls said

CHORUS
(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)
(Dee doody doom doom, dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Drove through the town, drove through the country
Showed 'em how a motor could go
I said "how do you like my triple carburetor?"
And one of them whispered low

CHORUS

Seven little girls smoochin' in the back seat
Every one in love with Fred
I said "you don't need me, I'll get off at my house"
And this is what the seven girls said

(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)

All of them in love with Fred
(Dee doody doom doom)
Kissin' and a'huggin with Fred
(Dee doody doom doom)
Wish that I could be like Fred
(DOOM)

Paul Evans has an interesting web site, if you're interested in this sort of stuff, and of course you can order his recordings there. It's www.paulevans.com
And, by the way the song goes

bee-DOOey-dooey-doo
bee-DOOey-dooey-doo
bee-DOOey-dooey-dooey-doo!

So dere!

I have just started another thread with a Jewish parody of this song.
The title of the thread is "Parody: Seven Little Kids". Can someone who has more experience with the workings of this site than I do, please establish a blue clickable link from here to that thread ?

Thank You                   SOL ZELLER

I'm going strictly from memory here, so I might well be wrong. However, I remember it as

And here's what the little girls said

not as

And this is what the seven girls said

"And this is what the seven girls said" is correct. Just listened to it--I'd bought it on i-Tunes years ago, and we sing it often at our regular doo-wop sings.   It's still a big hit.

When I was seven years old my teacher got the class to do an animated version of the song. The seven little girls self-selected, but then, to my absolute horror, they picked me to be Fred. They all huddled tightly around me, pretending to be squashed up with me in the back seat, gleefully singing the song, doing the hugging and kissing at the appropriate points, in front of the whole class. Traumatised for life, I was!
