Subject: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: GUEST,Paul Burke Date: 20 May 04 - 07:02 AM Doesn't seem to be in Digitrad, it's a song my father used to sing. Chorus runs: Bread from Evans's, Cheese from Jenkins's, Beer at the Collier's Arms (the Collier's Arms), Beer at the Collier's Arms. Tune is of course "Bread of Heaven". Anyone got the verses? |

Bread from Hovises Tea from Liptonses ................ Air is free forever more Air is free forever more Missing line might be somethibg like "Beer we'll brew forever more." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Dave Bryant Date: 20 May 04 - 07:37 AM Life presents a dismal picture From conception to the tomb. Father's got an anal stricture, Mother's got a fallen womb. Sister Sue has been aborted For the twenty second time - second time. Brother John has been deported For a homosexual crime. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Dave Bryant Date: 20 May 04 - 09:58 AM I've always heard (and sung) it to Cwm Rhonda. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Joe_F Date: 20 May 04 - 05:59 PM The version sung to Cwm Rhondda at St Andrews University in my day (1959) was (repetitions omitted) You must eat when you are hungry. You must drink when you are dry. You must rest when you are weary. Don't stop breathing, or you'll die. Father's pants will soon fit Willie. Will 'e wear 'em? Willie will. Will 'e wear 'em, will 'e wear 'em, Will 'e wear 'em? Willie will. The tradition of setting undignified words to hymn tunes seems to me to be even stronger in Britain than in America. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Gareth Date: 20 May 04 - 07:01 PM "Always eat when you are hungry, Always drink when you are dry, Always rest when you are weary, Don't stop breathing or you'll die. To my memory there was a varient sung, late in the drinking session, by Colliers in South Wales. More a cynical version of life underground. This thread has triggered my memory of it - Does any Catter have this version, I will be makng enquiries in the remnants of the local Lodges. Gareth |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Herga Kitty Date: 21 May 04 - 02:47 AM The "Always eat when you are hungry" verse has also been sung as the last verse of "In the boarding house I lived in" parody of "Silver threads among the gold". Kitty |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Schantieman Date: 21 May 04 - 07:22 AM In Alan Bennett's play Forty Years On, the school rugby team bursts in upon the headmaster's leaving speech singing rugby songs to hymn tunes. As far as I can remember (having sung them in the play about thirty years ago!) they were 'The Dogs They Had a Party' to the tune of 'The Church's one Salvation' and 'It Nearly Broke the Family's Heart' to 'Those in Peril on the Sea' ...and another one which slips my mind for the moment. I may be able to supply words if required. Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Jon Bartlett Date: 22 May 04 - 03:10 AM "My Darling Clemetine" goes very well to Cwm Rhondda. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: GUEST,Annie Date: 23 Dec 16 - 09:14 AM the chorus we sang at university was "father's pants will soon fit Willie- will 'e wear 'em /will 'e 'ell, will 'e 'ell" etc |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 23 Dec 16 - 09:43 AM The Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles version I recall is like this: Home presents a dismal picture Dark and dismal as the tomb Father's got an anal stricture Auntie's got a fallen womb Brother Joe, through masturbation Never laughs and rarely smiles He spends all his leisure hours Cracking ice for father's piles But we are not broken-hearted No, no, not a bit of it Brother Joe's just been and farted Father's ha-ad a lovely sh_t. To save my life, I can't remember where I got that version. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Dec 16 - 10:03 AM Of course, anything that scans to "Deutschland Uber Alles" will also scan to "Ode To Joy". Pure coincidence that the European anthem scans to "Deutschland . . ." of course. (Germany above all?) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: Joe_F Date: 23 Dec 16 - 04:40 PM In all fairness, one should note that the words to "Deutschland uber alles" are not imperialistic but patriotic & sentimental. "Above all" refers not to Germany's political hegemony but to its place in Germans' hearts. Its geographical limits are in fact specified in the song. Kaiser Bill & Hitler would have done well to pay attention. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: GUEST,Jessica Date: 01 Jan 17 - 10:56 PM Our version was... Always eat when you are hungry Always drink when you are dry Always sleep when you are tired Don't stop breathing or you'll die. Bread from Evans's Tea from Williams's Whiskey from the Collier's Arms Whiskey from the Collier's Arms ...and definitely sung to Cwm Rhondda |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: GUEST,Grey Date: 09 Jan 20 - 01:31 AM Hi! I know nothing about this site, but came across this thread while searching for the name of a song, that you seem to be discussing here— “Always eat when you are hungry, Always drink when you are dry, Always sleep when you are sleepy, But don’t stop breathing or you’ll die. Or you will die” I came across today while watching the 1945 movie Molly and Me, which actually closes out on that song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: GUEST Date: 24 Dec 20 - 07:27 AM Interesting how many different tunes this gets sung to - I know it as an extra verse to 'When this Lousy War Is Over, the Oh What a Lovely War! parody of 'What a Friend We Have in Jesus'. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: rugby song hymn parody From: GUEST,BlindHawkeye Date: 03 Feb 25 - 04:02 PM The Cwm Rhondda lyrics that we used to sing were: Guide me up the Rhondd Valley Where the miners spend their time Guide me to the little tavern Where they drink and sing in rhyme Bread from Evans's Bread from Evans's Beer from the Colliers Arms (Colliers Arms) Beer from the Colliers Arms Eat some bread when you are hungry Drink some beer when you are dry Go to sleep when you are tired Don't stop breathing, or you'll die Bread from Evans's ... |
