Subject: Lyr Req: C.I.T. song
From: Pogo
Date: 21 May 04 - 11:49 PM

Years ago when I was a kid I stayed over at a family friend's house (her mom and my mom were friends and the daughter and I were close friends also) I went to a synagogue for the first time (they were Jewish) In between sessions a group of us kids sat outside on the steps and talked and I remember another kid singing this odd song.

We are the C.I.T. so piteous
[not sure of this part], the food is hideous
We're gonna sit and strum and fool around, [rhyming word here I've always remembered it as a nonsense word 'nuggy bound' whatever that means]
North Star, C.I.T.

Take it mind I was like nine or something at the time so I can't be sure of anything in this song but that's how I remember it

Anyone know about this little song and what it means? Thanks for filling in the gaps :)

No luck on google. Do you know what the C.I.T. stood for?

No clue :( as I said it's been a few years...so those might not even be the correct initials...or it might have been a word that sounded like C.I.T. Memory is funny like that *shrugs*

Pogo: What city or town were you in when this happened? I have a hunch C.I.T. might be something locally well known. I'm guessing Something-or-other Institute of Technology. It might be a parody made up by students to commemorate their school.

C.I.T. = Counselor In Training this is a variation of CIT song sung in many camps. A search on Google confirmed my suspision that North Star is a boys camp in Wisconsion. I remember the CIT's at Girl Scout Camps singing this as well/

From Meatballs with Bill Murray:

(group singing) -

We are the CIT's so pity us,
the kids are brats the food is hidious.
We're gonna smoke and drink
and fool around. We're nookie bound.
We're the North Star CIT's.

One of my favorites.

For a moment I thought it was Carnegie Institute of Technology, now known as Carnegie-Mellon University.

Um, CIT's are "counselors in training". The lyric is:
We are the C.I.T.'s so, pity us..the kids are brats the food is hideous. We're gonna smoke and drink and fool around..we're nookie bound..we're North Star C.I.T.'s.

Not this one, anyway:

In southern California with grace and splendor bound,
Where the lofty mountain peaks look out to lands beyond,
Proudly stands our alma mater, glorious to see.
We raise our voices proudly, hailing, hailing thee.
Echos ringing while we're singing, over land and sea.
The hall of fame resound thy name, noble CIT.

Nice mondegreen,
"We are the CIT so pity us"
becomes
"We are the CIT so piteous"

Reminds me of my days in Sunday School when I could never understand why (in "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild") it said "Pity mice implicitly"

So, now the question is: did this song come originally from the movie Meatballs, or did it come from an actual camp?
