Subject: Which 'Catters going to Whitby Fest?
From: Steve Parkes
Date: 24 May 04 - 04:41 AM

Mrs P has uncharacteristically booked us a week's holiday in Whitby for the Festival. She'll probably look in once or twice (she's very partcular about who she goes to see), while I shall be there a bit more often. I don't think the programme comes out till July, so I shall have to wait and see what tickets to book.

Meanwhile, what friends-I-haven't-met-yet (& those I have) should I be keeping an eye out for up there? Anything tips? (We're not camping.)

Steve

I'm not really a regular on this site, but this year will be my first Whitby Festival. Realistically I'll only be able to make a couple of evenings, though

Among the regulars are moi, R&W R , Lady Aelfleda, Ken J, the Ducks, Herga Kitty, Vectis (sometimes), Dave Bryant, Old Git. Best singaround is at Tap & Spile but it's very exclusive !!!!

Linda and I are planning to get up there again this summer. I was thinking about comming via the Hull Nautical Festival. Linda will have only got back from holiday and should be meeting me up there.

GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNING - This Festival could seriously damage your vocal chords (esp. The Tap & Spile). You are advised to drink plenty of beer and perhaps even suck a "Fisherman's Friend" (if she'll let you) to compensate for this.

I'll be there with Pat Spoons (a catter once removed) for the week, working in the creche. We're taking the Mari Lwyd there on an out-of-season jaunt, she likes the seaside. Look out for her in the Friday afternoon parade.

One excellent thing about this years venue - it's not as far up the hill...........phew...........

I'm planning on going this year, as there's a weeks gap this year between Whitby and Broadstairs, which I usually attend

While I'm on, is there anyone driving up to Whitby from London way Sat to Sat, who can give me a lift? I'll share the petrol money, of course.

Pm me or email

I'll be there as usual, but I probably won't be seen in many of the aforementioned pubs. I'll be too busy getting my money's worth, going to workshops, concerts, ceilidhs etc. I not too keen on sitting in smokey crowded pubs all week listening to 'The Fields of Athenry'.
Mind you I will be in 'The Elsinor' on Wed lunchtime to see the 'Lunchtime Legends'.

The 2 week gap means I'll have to go back to work between Sidmouth and Whitby this year, but I'm booked into my usual B&B from Friday to Friday (sorry harlowpoet! - although the parking's getting so difficult I might go up on the train again, anyway). I hope to see all you lot who've posted, in the Endeavour, Plough, T&S...

It goes without saying that The Good Lady Jingle & meself will be int'owd spot all of the best ten day party in the WORLD.!!! Now, we are normally esconced(is that a word?) in the Middle Earth most nights, but Les and Sandra(the licencees) are no longer involved in the running of the pub. A new tenant has just taken over. I shall call in this weekend to enquire about Folk Week's arrangements with the new people(who I believe I know anyway).
Now, the Middle Earth has always been a bit "alternative" since me mates Jim, Andy & I started the stuff in the seventies, so I'm afraid you will hear Fields of Athenry every night, maybe twice! Plus every other cliched song, but also skiffle, rock & roll, trad folk and jazz.
Plus it is one of only two pubs in Whitby where you can perform outside(weather permitting). I shall also enquire wether the Late (I mean LATE) hours will still apply!!!
If you are looking for a quietish session, The Middle Earth ain't for you, especially as some of us accompany everybody!!
We have just recently bought a tiny pad in Whitby so that's gonna save uis at least £50 in taxi fares this Folk week!

Ossen et al, the Glaisdale run is, as has become "tradition", on the first Sunday of Folk Week. As the Moon and Sixpence has closed the fair Lady Wombat and I spent a couple of Saturday lunchtimes driving out along the railway line to try a find another suitabel venue only to find ourself back in Glaisdale talking to the Lanlord of the Arncliffe Arms who is to open his lower bar which we can have sole use of, he is going to put staff on and I will ask that he has the facilities to make sandwiches etc. The new train timetable should be avaialble this weekend so I will pick up a copy and let people know the times of trains. Approx 12.30 out and 4.00 back, I din't know that the Glaisdale Sunday had set itself up to rival Lisdoonvarna in the matchmaking stakes, normally the matchmaker get a fee ........... El Ted are you listening!!

Sandy & I will be there as usual, in all the pubs mentioned and playing & possibly dancing for the Scratch Morris.
Let's not get too carried away just yet though, as there are many other festivals to enjoy before then ... Chippenham, Bishop's Castle, Alcester, Chorley, Abbots Bromley, Luts'k (Ukraine) & Sidmouth to mention just a few!
The Glaisdale trip sounds worth a visit - not been on that before. Meet at the railway Station for the 12.30 ish train, with music/singing on the train and then at the pub, Raggy?
What's this about Scratch Mummers, Les? Sounds interesting! When and where? What play? What kit needed? Do you need any help in sorting it?

Alan

The train out and back is wonderful, the conductor normally has to collect tickets from two old men, one of their wife's and a dog. But once a year he gets us lot, singing our heads off on the way out, every train song we can think of, however tenuous, and then on the way back with eleventeen pints inside us, big happy smiling faces giving it big licks with harmonies etc, last year we even had a Irish step dancer doing his best to the rocking rythym of the train....... absolutely brilliant

Whelks, Cockles, Mussels and Shrimps may come under the Seafood Miscellaneous Items Order and as such the licencing scheme does not come into effect until October 2007 when obiously being in possession of a clas A prawn becomes a offence which carries a custodial sentence but my colleagues in the Whitby Seafood (no Vinegar please) Police may advise more.

Offences relating to consumer information
    3. - (1) Any person who, in contravention of Article 4.1 of Regulation 104/2000 (consumer information) as read with Regulation 2065/2001, offers for retail sale to the final consumer any of the products to which that Article applies shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale.

    (2) Any person who fails to comply with Article 8 of Regulation 2065/2001 (traceability and control) shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale

The regulation came into force in 2000, it demonstrates how much the Whitby Seafood police are behind with their interpretaion of the current legislation

Sad isn't it

Any one want to form a scratch fields of Athenry and wild rover group, you have to wear shorts and sandals and sing the songs as loud as you can whilst performing a daft dance routine, prefably ragga style.

Does that include thel variation with "Hey Baby, let the free birds fly!" interjected by the onlookers (that's one grade below audience) in the appropriate place?

...being in possession of a clas A prawn becomes a offence ...

Surely this applies only to possession in order to supply? I believe that action would not be taken over possession of small quantities (such as oakley's home-grown whelks).

Perhaps we should not be discussing this in a public forum?

Possession in order to supply a class A prawn would indeed be an offence however if the said prawn could prove it was an only child it would be let off with a caution

Are we still allowed to sing about seafood ie
"Molly Malone", "I can't get my Winkle out", "Why does the Winkle always turn to the right ?", "The Lobster Song", "The Ratcatcher's Daughter", "Picking all the big ones out", "Just a Pawn in the Game", "I did it Sideways" etc ?

Or will it count as provocation or something ?

Shona, what YOU see when you look at me and my contemporaries is someone approaching 50, what is looking back at you is still just 23 or thinks it is. Age is predominantly in the mind, there will be people at whitby 20 years older than I how have the attititude to life of a 20 year old
