Subject: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: C.R. Neff Date: 13 Oct 98 - 09:57 PM The thread on the Ill-Mo Boys mentioned an old-time music newsgroup. What is the web address of this and/or other OTM discussion groups? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks, C.R. Neff |

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: Dale Rose Date: 13 Oct 98 - 11:01 PM Well, I think this will get you there. After I send it, I will try it, and if it doesn't work, I will see what I can do. The information that you need in order to comment to the group is there on the page somewhere. Once you click on a particular message, you can then click on view thread to see all the messages on that subject. |

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: Dale Rose Date: 13 Oct 98 - 11:10 PM Nope, didn't work. When an url is long and contains & signs, it seems to me that they don't work too well. Don't know why. Try this. Go to the address that the link above gives you and then enter:
(rec.music.country.old-time)
in the search box. That will do it, I am sure. If not, I am sure that someone more knowledgeable than I can get you there. |

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: Bill D Date: 13 Oct 98 - 11:14 PM better yet...learn to use newsgroups directly...thru your browser or thru a newsreader such as FreeAgent..it is really amazingly easy once you have done it a time or two... |

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: The Shambles Date: 14 Oct 98 - 03:16 PM Just been reading the Old-Time N/G and there was a posting about Dolly Parton. I turned to my wife and said "what's she doing here in Old-Time"? My wife replied that "Dolly Parton was getting on a bit". |

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: C.r. Neff Date: 14 Oct 98 - 07:59 PM That's good, that's good. Thanks to all of you so far. Dale, your instructions got me there. Bill, I'll follow your advice. One site I visited said I could access through my e-mail, or something similar; I'm guessing this is the direct access you're talking about. It said my provider is one who offers this, so I'll check it out. I have only been online for a week, so all this stuff is new and confusing, but I'm eager to learn. Alice, thanks for the address. I look forward to visiting there. Shambles, Dolly recorded some old-timey stuff years ago like "Two Orphans" and "Little Blossom", but hopefully the current news bit is more like that she made a substantial contribution for the benefit of traditional music. Again, thanks, everyone. Keep 'em coming-I'll not turn down more. C.R. Neff |

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: Dale Rose Date: 14 Oct 98 - 08:47 PM The Fox Valley Folklore Society has the most comprehensive set of links that I know of. Some of them are out of date, but most can be found by searching for them. I recommend ProFusion which is a multi search engine. I normally set it for phrase and choose manually, chosing all except Lycos, which routinely returns too many useless urls. Those instructions will be clear enough when you get there. After experimentation, you may find some other combination which works better for you.
OK, here is the Fox Valley site:

Subject: RE: Old-time Newsgroups and sites From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 17 Oct 98 - 08:23 PM Just to clean up the computer stuff a bit: C.R, there are essentially three types of communication by computer. First there is the mailing list. There you subscribe and the postings of all other subscribers is send to you by email. You make your input by emailing to the address for the group. Then there are newsgroups. These predate web sites. You use a special program called a "news reader" to access them. The one mentioned by Dale, starting with rec....., is an example of one of them. Some net browsers will connect you to a news group by clicking. If Dales address, rec.music.country.old-time, doesn't work, you can try giving the browser a hint that this is a news group and not a web site by typing. news://rec.music.country.old-time Finally, there are web sites. We all know about them. In their simplest form they are one-way. That is they supply information; but they don't accept input. There are programs, however, that allow a web-site to accept visitor input. The simplest is the "mailme" box that you click on to get a window for composing an email message to someone on the site. Far more sophisticated is the program used by mudcat to provide this forum. Murray (the computer maven) |
