Subject: Lyr Req: suantrai na maighdine
From: GUEST,Jean-Paul

Hi,

first of all, if you want to get the lyrics of the CD "Faith of our fathers", don't buy it, there is no word on the inlay; but if you want to listen to beautiful songs, sure, you have to get it at once.

All of that to say that I've got this CD and now I want to get the words of the song "suantrai na maighdine" (in irish and in english too, if possible)

Thanks

don't know if this is the one you're looking for. have you checked the database as well?

suantraí as sung by Anúna:
Mo ghaol, mo ghrá 'gus m'eadúil thú
Mo stoirín úr is m'fhéirín thú
Mo mhacán álainn scéimheach thú
Chan fiú mé féin bheith 'd dháil
Alleluia

O you my kin, my love and my idol
My darling and my precious thing
My beautiful little son
With just myself to care for you
Alleluia

Unfortunately, as far as I can understand, there is no word corresponding; perhaps there is a solution : I've found, thanks to Philippa, a CD "Ceol na Nollag" where there is this song; I've to buy it.

From: GUEST,Philippa

SUANTRAÍ NA MAIGHDINE

Adhraim mo leanbh beag tagth' ar an saol;
Codail, a Linbh, go sámh.
Adhraim a laige 's a loime nocht faon;
Codail, a Linbh, go sámh.
Inis, a ghrá, liom, id' luí sa mhainséar,
Inis cén fath Dhuit bheith sínte san fhéar,
Is tú Coimhde na nGrásta 'gus Íosa, Mac Dé
Codail, a Linbh, go sámh.

A Mhuire, a Mhathair's a Bhuime mhín tséimh;
Codail, a Linbh, go sámh.
Is mé Coimhde na nGrásta 'gus Íosa, Mac Dé
Codail, a Linbh, go sámh.
Ach go beo bocht a tháinig le mian ar an saol,
Chun deoraithe fánacha a shaoradh ón éag,
Is nuair ' chrochfar in airde mé claonfaid chugam féin;
Codail, a Linbh, go sámh.

although the words "Codail, a Linbh, go sámh" mean "sleep soundly, o Child"; in the second verse the lines are spoken by the son answering his mother.
I copied these verses from a school handout, not from the 54 page book which accompanies the "Ceol na Nollag" CD.

http://www.litriocht.com/shop/index.php is another on-line source for ordering Irish-language publications and recordings. I couldn't find "Ceol na Nollag" in their catalog, but you could contact Litríocht.com with your request; info @ litriocht.com Phone : +353 (0) 669 155 237 Fax : +353 (0) 669 155 523
The book, but not the CD I think, appears to be available from http://www.schoolbooksonline.ie/search.asp and http://www.buy4now.ie/Eason/shopping.aspx?loc=C&catid=1032.10&sort=0&sdir=asc&pg=11 (where the author is given as "Carúil Nollag", Christmas Carol!)

Or you can contact the publishers Cló Chaisil, 179 Bóthar Ráth Maoinis Uachtarach, Baile Átha Cliath 6, Éire

the other lullaby Ciarili mentioned has been recorded by Anúna and by Katie McMahon (album, "Celtic Christmas"), as I found on this lyrics site: Celtic Lyrics Corner

Anybody have any ideas about the origin of the lyrics here or its earliest appearance in print?

Obviously not Carúil Nollag if that is supposed to be an author rather than genre in the Cló Chaisil book (unless of course its code for someone called Noel Carroll < Christmas Carol!).

Thanks, Philippa for your efficiency and your kindness.

One thing :is the adress "carico @eircom.net" really the one of the publishers Cló Chaisil ? Because I have no response.

Suantraì na Maighdine is listed on Finola Ó Siochrú's website, http://www.osiochru.com/, as one of the songs on her new album ,"Light of Lights/Solas na Soilse: Christmas songs from the Irish Celtic tradition".

This song was actually written by Seán Óg Ó Tuama, and is still legally the property of his estate.

Codail, a linbh, go sámh.

I worship my little child, who has come into the world,
Sleep peacefully, my child.
I worship his weakness and his bare nakedness,
Sleep peacefully, my child.
Tell me, my love, as you lie in the manger,
Tell me why you are stretched on the hay,
[When] you are the Keeper of the Graces
and Jesus the Son of God,
Sleep peacefully, my child.

Mary, my mother, my sweet gentle nurse,
Sleep peacefully, my child.
I am the Keeper of the Graces and Jesus the Son of God,
Sleep peacefully, my child.
Truly poor I came into the world by my own choice,
To save straying wanderers from death,
And when I am hung on high,
they will turn to me.
Sleep peacefully, my child.
Sleep peacefully, my child.
