Hello and Hi! All fives!

Who's going to the next Market Rasen Folk Club event on 4th June?

I certainly am going. I heard that Cara will be there, and I will hope to jump at the front of the queue when they sell their CDs that they said were bringing along.

I am also interested to see Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher play. Anyone know what instruments they play, or can I guess right that it will be guitars?

To miss Bill and Dave would be shameful so I will certainly be there.
Come along folks and Be Blessed. Also remember that the Buffalo Brothers last farewell is at Doncaster on the 5th June. Be sad to see them go.
Best wishes.

Bill's concertina playing is very fine, and he has a MIDI concertina which is unique.... but it's the singing that you'll remember!

Info about Artists appearing:-

BILL WHALEY AND DAVE FLETCHER
Dave Fletcher & Bill Whaley are Lincolnshire singers of songs rather than singers of Lincolnshire songs. They draw their songs from all over and then make them their own. They love singing and have worked hard to build up a rich, full sound developing both their vocal harmonies and the instrumental accompaniment. They are well known throughout their native county both for their club work as a duo and as members of the Higgledy Piggledy Band. Having performed as a duo for over 20 years they have a mixed repertoire with mainly a traditional feel picked from sources and a majority with a chorus. With two strong voices accompanied by Bill on English/and Duet concertinas, Harmonium or Accordion and Dave occasionally on Melodeon, performing songs they enjoy singing is most important to them. Over the past few years they have appeared at numerous clubs.
Two of the best voices in Folk Music - Harvey Andrews
They represent all that is special about Folk Music - Martyn Wyndham-Read
Such a wonderful sound. They gave us a great night, one of the best we have ever had at the club - South Shields Folk Club

CARA
Consist of:-

Mike Ryan who who does the vocals adn plays Uilleann Pipes, Whistle, Mandolin and Guitar.
John Rawlings plays Guitar and Cittern
Oakley plays Violin and Mandolin

Mike met John at a music session in Goxhill, North Lincolnshire and they quickly struck up a partnership based initially, on a fascination with the potential of Uilleann Pipes and Guitar played togetheer.
At a later point a much heralded talent from down the road came to their attention. Oakley was his name.
Having carefully considered his merits, John and Mike decided that the duo could become a trio and Oakley agreed.
The band perform and record their music as a labour of love. Whilst drawing on traditional music, many of their songs and tunes are original pieces of work, composed by Oakley and Mike Ryan and arranged by John Rawlings.
Within a relatively short period of time the band has recorded two albums in Ireland and performed extensively in the Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire areas.
CARA recorded their 2 CD's, "Asleep Behind The Settee" and "The Notes In The Stones" in 2002 and 2003 with Liam Cunningham at Boyle, Co Roscommon. The music contains the mixture of traditional pieces and tunes and songs written by Oakley and Mike Ryan that make up the CARA repertoire. CARA hope you can enjoy them as much as they enjoyed putting them together.
CARA have become firm favourites at Market Rasen Folk Club. Their performances have to be seen to see their versatilty and lovely music that they play and sing.

LUCY WRIGHT AND PAUL YOUNG
Lucy and Paul are both 19 years old. Lucy sings vocals and plays fiddle whilst Paul plays guitar. They have been influenced by Martin Simpson, June Tabor, Cara Dillon, and Kate Rusby.
Lucy has been singing ever since she can remember. Played fiddle since ten. Comes from musical family – uncles Michael Wright and John Wright. She started playing classical music and has been in county orchestras and led the school orchestra etc. Lucy has learned a lot of traditional songs from her dad and uncles.
Paul has played electric guitar since eleven and acoustic guitar since seventeen having seen Martin Simpson live. He started in a rock band and converted to folk music 2 years ago, having been to the Whitby Folk Festival.
They have been playing together at Gainsborough Folk Club for the last year, helped by Sue and Mike Dewsbury who run the club. Started busking with their folk tunes last summer. Attended Brigg young folk musicians' workshop last summer. They have played live on Radio Lincolnshire. They played at the Moor and Coast Festival at Whitby 1st and 2nd May 2004. They are also regular players at the Market Rasen Folk Club and will be one of two supporting acts with Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher on June 4th 2004 at this club. They will also be main guests on August 13th 2004.
July 18th 2004, they will be appearing at S't Albans Folk Club as Guest Artists.
They are playing at Filey folk Festival 30th July to 1st August 2004.
20th November 2004 – Invited by Mick Peat to play at the Young Tradition Festival in Derby.

Lincolnshire. Well, West Lindsey to be precise. It's about 17 miles east of the Hub Of The Known Universe, Gainsborough. It's where Bernie Taupin hails from and where he wrote the lyrics to many of EJ's early hits (or so the locals allege!). And some very dangerous people live there now, don't they Villan? LOL!

Hey Guest look at the post above yours and click on the link to Market Rasen Folk Club. Once there you will be able to click on a link on the right side of the page to bring a map up to show you where the club is.

Yes I am dangerous and live there :-)

In reality we are very nice people in Market Rasen, but if you go through Gainsborough to get there, don't stop unless you want your hubcaps nicked. The only safe place in gainsborough is at the 8 Jolly Brewers where the Folk Club for Gainsborough is held.

Market Rasen is about 17 miles North of Lincoln and the road to use is the A46. Likewise it is about 17 miles East of Gainborough.

By the way the tickets are going, I expect a good turnout. 34 presold tickets to date + an additional 6 from tickets given as prizes and 7 people who make up the artists singing + 3 children.

If my maths is correct 50 people in the room already :-)

Well Friday has arrived and looking forward to tonight as will so many others. Not looking forward to the dentist this morning though.

The Market rasen website is nearing completion, so do take a look at it and keep informed about forthcoming events.

After the "WEARY WINTER", me and "MY DARLING GIRL" have "ONLY REMEMBERED" not to "FOLLOW THE DRUM".

"COME THE DAY" we go to Market Rasen to see "OLD MEN SING LOVE SONGS" and "YOU AND I" can then drink "ENGLISH ALE".

We will bypass the "ANGELS OF LINCOLN". Not stop for "LOST SAILOR" and not listen to "MAGGIE" the "FEMALE DRUMMER" and hope not to hit the "FOGGY DEW" otherwise we will have to "WAIT 'TIL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY".

If we meet "JENNY ON THE MOOR", we will be lost and have to ask a "LINCOLNSHIRE FARMER", the "SALT OF THE EARTH", the way.

REVIEW:

I would like to take this opportunity to say that all the folk artists were first rate, excellent, fantastic and very moving (in some numbers). The violinist from Cara played some fast violin music that was so moving, emotional and passionate.

I liked Bill's "One-liner" humour that he seemed to reel out throughout their time up-front. Travelling Audience knows who Bill was referring to when he said Vera! You had to be there to know what I mean.

I hope to hear more of Paul and Lucy in the future, either at Market Rasen or at the new Gainsborough Folk Club venue when it is discussed at the AGM.

Good night!

Les, keep your eye out for ElTed, to go on your future list, he will delight your audience with his amazing guitar playing skills.

Oakley, told you you'd come on a bit!
