Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Gibson L-5 From: GLoux Date: 25 Aug 04 - 11:29 AM I was able to get the link to WSMV working...it is an amazing clip...I may not have this exactly right, but I think they said a Nashville business man, Bill McLain (sp?), paid almost $600,000 USD for the guitar and donated it to the Country Music Hall of Fame. George Gruhn is also in the clip. It is the first time I have seen video of Maybelle playing her guitar. To say that it made my day is an understatement... Thank you, Mr. McLain. -Greg |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Gibson L-5 From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 25 Aug 04 - 10:48 AM There's a picture of the guitar and some info from George Greuhn on the back page of this month's Acoustic Guitar magazine. I once heard Randy Scruggs tell on the radio how Maybelle taught him to play Wildwood Flower when she was babysitting him! Maybelle was a great person as well as a great musician. Really great that the museum got it. Hope to get there soon. Chris |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Gibson L-5 From: BanjoRay Date: 25 Aug 04 - 09:24 AM The following just appeared in the rec.music.country.old-time newsgroup. I couldn't make it work, but I'm sure others will. Cheers Ray Mother Maybelle's Gibson L-5 guitar was recently purchased and donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Check out this web page -- http://www.wsmv.com/ -- and look under "featured videos" to see a news video clip of the news story. Nice clips of Earl Scruggs and Marty Stuart playing the guitar. But the highlight for me was seeing the clip of Mother Maybelle herself -- looks like it's from the late 50s or early 60s. Someone suggested her video piece might have been from an appearance on the Flatts & Scruggs TV show. Is there much video out there of the Carter Family? |
Subject: Maybelle Carter's Gibson L-5 From: Mark Clark Date: 25 Aug 04 - 12:06 AM I know we had a thread about this but I've searched on every concievable set of keywords and can't seem to locate it. According to this article at MSNBC News, Mother Maybelle's famous guitar has been purchased by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum thanks to a generous donation from philanthropist Bob McLean. I'm sure glad to see this guitar stay out of some private collection. It's too big a part of the development of country music to be shut away. - Mark |

Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Once Famous Date: 29 May 04 - 06:23 PM Kim c, I've been to Gruhn's shop at 4th and Broadway. It is best to go without any credit cards or your checkbook. For those that don't already know, George Gruhn writes a very informative Q&A column in each issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine. |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: beardedbruce Date: 28 May 04 - 08:11 PM Actually, they do have concerts with the instruments at the Smithsonian, quite often. |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Sorcha Date: 27 May 04 - 08:12 PM As long as it gets played, I don't care who has it. IF it ends up in the Smithsonian, I doubt it will ever get played, just put on display. Not a good end for any instrument. |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Kim C Date: 27 May 04 - 07:53 PM Art, have you ever been to his shop in Nashville? I've only ever driven by it lo these many years - scared to go in there 'cause I know I can't afford anything! |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: GUEST Date: 27 May 04 - 06:42 PM I remember George Gruhn in Chicago--1965-66. He came into the Folklore Center with his first D-45. I worked there then. He took it out of the case--squatted in the aisle and picked "Wildwood Flower"---the only song he knew. This thread takes me back. Truly does. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: pdq Date: 27 May 04 - 05:19 PM As far as recording with it, I believe Marty Stuart and Randy Scruggs have. For those who heard that Bill Monroe's mandolin had been sold to a Japanese investor for $2.5 million, IT WAS NOT. That was part of an elaborate April fools joke involving several stories, including bogus elections to the County Music Hall of Fame. |
Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Kim C Date: 27 May 04 - 04:57 PM I doubt it. He is one of the most famous guitar collectors in the US. If he doesn't have it handy, he knows where to get it. |

Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Mark Clark Date: 27 May 04 - 02:59 PM Well, I don't know whether it will help but I just sent Senator Byrd of West Virgina a note about this issue asking that he find some way to get it into the Smithsonian. Senator Byrd is a fiddle player himself and is likely to care about the cultural heritage this instrument represents. As long as Senator Byrd doesn't learn that I sometimes have Internet conversations with Bobert, maybe we've got a chance.

Subject: RE: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Mooh Date: 27 May 04 - 10:29 AM I'm not much of a fan of most modern country music, it seems to have drifted too far from its roots for my liking, but the Carters and Cashs were the real deal in my opinion. I'd love to hear that guitar recorded by folks like Norman Blake, Tony Rice, and the like. Too bad Chet isn't around to make it sing. End of an era. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: Maybelle Carter's Guitar For Sale From: Kim C Date: 27 May 04 - 09:57 AM Story here If this has already been posted, I apologize. I looked and didn't see an entry for it already. How much money would we each have to contribute if we wanted to buy it and permanently loan it to the museum? |
