A collection of John Cohen's three documentary films is "That High Lonesome Sound: Films of American Rural Life and Music" (Shan1404). "Sara and Maybelle" (B&W) is Part 3.

i seem to remember that john cohen did a short film featuring maybelle and sara. i think it was on a collection of his films including his one with roscoe holcomb. can't recall the name tho. anybody familiar with this?

I was able to get the link to WSMV working...it is an amazing clip...I may not have this exactly right, but I think they said a Nashville business man, Bill McLain (sp?), paid almost $600,000 USD for the guitar and donated it to the Country Music Hall of Fame.    George Gruhn is also in the clip.

It is the first time I have seen video of Maybelle playing her guitar. To say that it made my day is an understatement...

There's a picture of the guitar and some info from George Greuhn on the back page of this month's Acoustic Guitar magazine.
I once heard Randy Scruggs tell on the radio how Maybelle taught him to play Wildwood Flower when she was babysitting him! Maybelle was a great person as well as a great musician.
Really great that the museum got it. Hope to get there soon.

the highlight for me was seeing the clip of Mother Maybelle herself --
looks like it's from the late 50s or early 60s. Someone suggested her
video piece might have been from an appearance on the Flatts & Scruggs
TV show. Is there much video out there of the Carter Family?

I know we had a thread about this but I've searched on every concievable set of keywords and can't seem to locate it.

According to this article at MSNBC News, Mother Maybelle's famous guitar has been purchased by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum thanks to a generous donation from philanthropist Bob McLean.

I'm sure glad to see this guitar stay out of some private collection. It's too big a part of the development of country music to be shut away.

Actually, they do have concerts with the instruments at the Smithsonian, quite often.

As long as it gets played, I don't care who has it. IF it ends up in the Smithsonian, I doubt it will ever get played, just put on display. Not a good end for any instrument.

I remember George Gruhn in Chicago--1965-66. He came into the Folklore Center with his first D-45. I worked there then. He took it out of the case--squatted in the aisle and picked "Wildwood Flower"---the only song he knew. This thread takes me back. Truly does.

As far as recording with it, I believe Marty Stuart and Randy Scruggs have.

For those who heard that Bill Monroe's mandolin had been sold to a Japanese investor for $2.5 million, IT WAS NOT. That was part of an elaborate April fools joke involving several stories, including bogus elections to the County Music Hall of Fame.

I doubt it. He is one of the most famous guitar collectors in the US. If he doesn't have it handy, he knows where to get it.

Well, I don't know whether it will help but I just sent Senator Byrd of West Virgina a note about this issue asking that he find some way to get it into the Smithsonian. Senator Byrd is a fiddle player himself and is likely to care about the cultural heritage this instrument represents.

As long as Senator Byrd doesn't learn that I sometimes have Internet conversations with Bobert, maybe we've got a chance.

I'm not much of a fan of most modern country music, it seems to have drifted too far from its roots for my liking, but the Carters and Cashs were the real deal in my opinion. I'd love to hear that guitar recorded by folks like Norman Blake, Tony Rice, and the like. Too bad Chet isn't around to make it sing.
